What I've never understood is why they rotate umpires around the bases. Don't you think that guys would be better at calling balls and strikes if that was all they did? If they had home plate specialists who were behind the plate every night then I think those guys would get 4 times the experience and the strike zones would be able to be more uniformly enforced.

Clearly we can't have video replay on balls and strikes, but why not institute a challenge system on base plays and deciding if a guy made a clean catch on a ball? Give each manager 2 per game and 1 for extra innings. They used replay in the little league world series and it added a minute and a half at the most.

I had nightmares of the Reds getting no-hit in back to back games. Glad Phillips took care of that. Also, the Phillies are not taking care of the ball. A couple of errors by Chase Utley and the Reds have another run.

4) Chase Utley was not touched by that Ball pitched by Chapman. Not at all

5) Chase Utley was out at second base. Called correctly and there's 2 outs with a guy on first. Instead there was 1 out with a guy on first and second.

6) The Reds gave that game away. Every Phillie run resulted because of an error. They haven't made that many errors or done that many boneheaded things all year. The playoffs are a different animal, indeed.

7) Just win a game Reds. My count is now at 13 straight playoff losses for my 3 teams. Unbelievable.

Yeah, it'd be nice to have one ump the entire time, but honestly what umpire would want to be hunched over behind the plate every single game?

Not only that home plate umps get nailed with foul balls all the time, and have to wear extra gear on some real hot days. If you want to know why umpires rotate look at home plate it would be unfair to have anyone do it more often than the rest of the crew.

It was Bobby Cox duty to be ejected at least one more time before he bid the Braves adieu.

1) How are the Phillies allowed to give out white towels?

They're not the only team to do it - didn't the Twins have the "homer hankies"? FWIW, Jayson Werth claimed to have lost a ball in the towels in last year's playoffs, so it certainly affects both sides. It's kind of dumb though - I've always thought that the towels should be red.

Exactly, you don't make a towel the same color as the ball. They were talking on TBS how the last few years there have been more errors in the outfield at CBP presumably due to the towels.

Not saying that was the cause of the loss today, because it wasn't. Freaking out after the first Philly scores and letting it effect everything was.

There's nothing you can really do about it though - what if the crowd wanted (for some stupid reason) to do a white out and everyone wore white shirts? You couldn't disallow them entry to the park. You couldn't really stop people from bringing and waving their own towels either. Not defending it, just saying that crowd distractions are nearly impossible to legislate.

In short because, as one umpire put it in an article I read years ago on this very subject, "A night at third base is almost like a night off." The umps need to stay fresh. 148 games a year behind the plate would burn you out very quickly.
