How would you describe your taste in jerseys/logos?

I know there are people on here of all ages and backgrounds, so I was curious to see what you value in terms of a sports logo or jersey set? I get the feeling there is a consistency with everybody's preferences and I would just like to understand what goes into your decison to liking or even buying a jersey.I feel the big debate is between the traditional/classic look to the edgy/modern look.

Personally, I really appreciate when a team creates an identity and sticks with it. I feel like if you win using a jersey or logo, then stay with what works. If people associate certain colors, fonts, and socks with your team then by all means dont change. That being my mindset, some of my favorite jersey sets are the Bears, Lute Olsen era Arizona basketball, and BU hockey just to name a few. Some of my least favorites are the Falcons, Mavericks, and the Thrashers. I am 21 years old also which may surprise some. I think everybody thinks people my age love Oregon football.

So is this what we debate about?

I'm pretty heavily biased towards anything from the 80's. Seeing some of the garish & unusual NBA uniforms of that time is really what got me interested in both sports and design.

Otherwise, I like nice, simple, classic-looking designs.

I'm pretty classic and conservative when it comes to design, though there are some modern designs out there that I like. I really don't like "experiments" like Oregon and designs that feature "added colors" like Oregon and Boise State (along with many BFBS teams). I prefer designs that are traditional, simple, and clean (even if some may not have as much tradition as others). If it's modern, I like modern that isn't too wacky and spilled everywhere, but is a nice change of pace. There's a way to be modern and simple (Broncos come to mind).

However, I do a have a soft spot for SOME late 90's designs. This is mostly for nostalgia reasons as I was a kid during that time. I didnt like designs like the gradient Atlanta Hawks, but LOVED the teal Pistons and the Shaq-era Magic.

To give you all an idea, here's just a sampling of team's

uniforms I like:

NFL: Colts, Jets, Broncos, 90's Seahawks

NBA: Jazz, Celtics, Finals-era Jazz, Green and Red Sonics

MLB: Cardinals, Rockies, Dodgers, Disney-era Angels

NHL: Disney-era Mighty Ducks, Blackhawks, Gretzky-era Kings

NCAAF: Brees-era Purdue, Wisconsin, Alabama, Penn State, Georgia, Brennan-era Hawaii, Stanford

The opinions I express are mine, and mine only. If I am to express them, it is not to say you or anyone else is wrong, and certainly not to say that I am right.

Simple, but instant classics.

Example-Johnny Canuck, Hartford Whalers, Lady Liberty, Pre-Edge London Knights, Philadelphia Eagles, Florida Gators, The Weagle

I check this site pretty frequently for the same reason I check ESPN.com and foxsports.com. I simply LOVE change in sports. With espn and foxsports I am constantly checking to see if anyone was traded/signed with a new club, here I'm always checking for uniform updates. There's just something about seeing an athlete who you've seen wearing the same gear religiously every week walk out in something totally new. No matter if it's a vaunted quarterback who was dealt to a division rival, or it's that one college team who you'll hardly see wear the same gear twice, there's just so many emotional factors that a uniform change brings. As strange as it may sound, it's one of the coolest things about sports IMO.

But, if a team is to stick with something, here's my general rule. Bright colored helmet which matches the pants, darker colored jersey/white jersey. Even if the uniform is great, seeing a team wearing helmets, jerseys, and pants that are all different colors just bugs me. And if it's an ugly uni, it just makes it worse.

Definitely agree on this. My big thing is jersey numbers, that's why I love the Offseason player movement thrads so much. Every time there's a trade or signing, I always check team websites to see what players are wearing what number.

^^ Who invited the spambot???

Anyway, if you caught my top ten(ish) college football uniform post buried somewhere in the NCAA College Football Uniforms thread, you might have saw that my tastes can be all over the place. I can't really say that I have a preference for either traditional or modern...or anywhere in between. For me, it's more about how the colors work within the design than anything. Having said that, brighter, more vibrant "in your face colors" tend to work better with a more conservative design (see the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa bay Buccaneers pre-'97), while at the same time I look for examples of run-of-the-mill color pairings (like red and whatever shade of blue) in more interesting designs (see the Houston Texans for a good example, and the Buffalo Bills as, well, the other kind of example).

Either way it goes, extraneous details and super-hackneyed number fonts are an automatic turn-off for me (see San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, and current Jacksonville Jaguars, whose previous sets, at least up until 2002, were probably among the best contemporary uniforms in the league along with the Philadelphia Eagles). Speaking of, I'm a sucker for unique numbers--BUT, like I said, so long as it reads like an actual font and not something forced (like the examples I just named off--and I'll add the Detroit Lions' teardrop numbers into this, as well).

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

I guess it depends on the sport for me. I like when Baseball teams try something new because I find baseball uniforms so boreing. On the flip side I love the traditional looks in football and hate the newer stuff (see: Vikings and Cardinals).

With hockey I like the original 6 teams to try to maintain a classic look while the new(or newest) teams(re-located or otherwise) like Atlanta, Columbus, Phoenix and, Tampa Bay should try out some new ideas as they don't have a huge history and it wouldn't be horrible to play around with the look.

For the most part, I'm a modern guy. My favorite NFL uniforms right now for the most part, are Atlanta, Arizona's home, and Jacksonville, but there are also some classic looks that are, well just that, classic (i.e. the Browns). I like some classic designs, but I usually tend to like modern designs better.

So is this what we debate about?

Yes.

I am traditional too. Though you'll find some inconsistencies...

MLB: Give me white vs gray. Alts should be truly "alternate"...maybe 10 games a year / team. Faves: the classics (yanks, orioles, red sox, tigers home, etc). But I love the late 1980s Brown/orange Padres.

Football: On helmets, give me letters (Wisconsin, UNC, Washington) or silhouettes (Det Lions, Iowa, Texas). Not too much detail and "ferocity" (Fresno State) and no logos and wordmarks together (Boise State). However, no gray facemasks unless gray/silver are part of the color scheme. Like the 1990s...prior to gray facemask comeback, Bengals/vikings/cardinals/falcons updates, etc. Faves: Creamsickle Bucs, 80s/90s Bengals, 90s Vikings roads, current Seahawks.

Hockey: Give me horizontal stripes and give me symmetric stripes. Stop the faux-retro circle logos. I love the 1980s for hockey. The X-mas Devils (unique and could have been be a great traditional uniform to this day), Flames with no black, N-Star North stars, Sabres, yellow/purple Kings.

College Basketball: Stop changing uniforms every year.

NBA: Not too bad right now...with the 1990s cartoons mostly out. Faves: Spurs, original Heat road, Celtics.

I agree on maintaining a consistent identity. Therefore the Canucks and Padres are two very frustrating teams to me. Pick a color scheme and logo and stick with it. Teams can and should tweak/update, but the general identity should carry through. I do like touch up modernizations when things start to look a bit too (insert decade). Best example: Oilers change from Gretzky era to 1990s/pre-reebok edge (which they eventually crapped on with their current glorified warm-ups). Other good ones: Twins recent update, Bruins RBK edge update, Seahawks update. Horrible over-reactions: Sabres move to black/red, Islanders move to fisherman logo, Pistons change of colors.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

In a football uniform (since that's my favorite sport), this is an ideal uniform. Modern, but not offensive to those with simpler and more traditional tastes.

  • small but fairly inconspicuous wordmark to establish identity
  • custom number font to break monotonous tone of block numbers throughout league
  • pants with simple stripes
  • perfect color balance between each of the team's colors

Bucfan, I think you stated it perfectly. I (and pretty much everyone on the forums) love change in sports, whether it be player-wise or uniforms/identiies. I'm absolutely stoked when rumors spread about uniform or logo changes, especially around Minor League Baseball. I'm a huge football fan, and I'm keeping up with all these ProCombat looks lately. And to be honest, I CANNOT STAND them.

I know I'm only 16, but I love classic uniforms, especially ones on a modern template. An example would be the Jets and Colts uniforms (only when the shoulder stripes aren't tapered). However, I really dislike big bulky sleeve stripes (see Steelers), they just look ugly and weird on today's template. I really enjoy the simplicity of some uniforms though, the ones where they can get away with putting a logo on the shoulder and maybe coloring the sleev cuffs and calling it a day. My favorite NFL uniform right now HAS to be the Ravens; great identity and simple, effective uniforms. I also like the Eagles, 'Niners, Bears, Dolphins, and Buccaneers. I also don't mind some modern looks like the Cardinals or Vikings.

As far as logos go, they have to look professional, accurate, and creative. Really can't stand the Jets, Steelers, or Browns, just a huge lack of creativity right there. I see where tradition comes in, but it really never looked good in the first place, I don't see why you would keep it.

I like my old teams in big cities traditional and my new teams in small cities progressive. Except in baseball, where anything off the board makes you look like a clown.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
