Justin Verlander is 3 outs away from a no-hitter

EDIT: Verlander got it. Congrats to him.

Yovani Gallardo came close as well. He lost his in the 8th.

And of course, the guy that I'm playing in fantasy had both of them, what are the odds of that happening?

For the second straight night the Giants get a walkoff win vs the first place Rockies. 4-1 vs the division leaders. Not too shabby.

So today I did something that only a very, very small percentage of baseball fans will ever do in their lifetimes: witness a no-hitter.

Verlander was just flat out untouchable. I knew by about the 4th inning that something special could be happening here...he was touching 101 mph repeatedly and the Jays only hit 3 balls out of the infield all day long. Tons of weak pop-ups and foul-outs. I guess when you field a lineup like that, you deserve it...

By about the 7th or 8th inning the crowd in TO. was totally into it. Gave him a standing O for most of the 9th. Definitely something I'll never forget.

I'm so freaking jealous. I was one day off of seeing Jonathan Sanchez toss a no-no two summers ago. That's something that I've always wanted to see live.

Is it true that it is the umpires that prevent close plays from being replayed on the videoboards? I heard somewhere that it was actually in their CBA that they won't show replays of close plays so that they don't get "shown up" during the game. If that's true, then man is that disturbing. I can certainly understand where they are coming from, but to deprive the fans the chance to see replays of controversial plays is absurd - especially with the giant HD screens that some teams have that are essentially simply really really really really high-tech scoreboards.

As for their CBA, the new MLB one, as well as those for the other major sports do not post their official's CBAs online, so I do not know, but I'm still looking. However under this new agreement, the Commissioner does have the expanded flexibility to use replay on more plays.

The NCAA does enact a no close video replays as policy for their tournaments, except in the Final Four when they have HD instant replay but that was installed this year.

I don't mean replay for use in overturning calls - I mean just showing replays on the video boards for the fans, like they do after every play in the NFL. It's natural instinct after a close play to turn to the scoreboard to see if the ump was right or not... but there's never a replay. Seems to be the case in every MLB park I've been in (though granted, two of those didn't have video boards.)

This is a true statement.

I totally agree with you there. If someone wants to be an ump or referee, in any sport, then they should be scrutinized pretty closely. With all of the blown calls that are regularly made, officials' accuracy needs to be monitored more closely. Even if that means an entire stadium seeing and reacting to said blown call, so the poor performance of said official becomes widely understood and known.

The flip side of that is that officials who are actually good at doing their jobs will get the respect they deserve. If an ump/ref goes games at a time without fans really reacting to a blown call, he'll develop a good reputation and be less likely to be associated with the bad umps. And we'll get a better sense of whether certain fan bases just boo every call that goes against their team, or if they are booing because their team really is getting screwed unfairly.

If it's true that the umpires prevent those replays, it's certainly a big case of "cover your ass." Unfortunate. Do your job and do it well, so that replays won't get you in trouble.

So the Cubs had lost 96 straight games when trailing after the 8th inning. That is until yesterday. I have zero confidence in Francisco Cordero as the Reds' closer.

One possible reason (I don't know if this is true or not, just something I thought of) is that they don't want umps to start making make-up calls. If an ump sees the replay and realizes he missed a close call, there's a good chance the next close call will go the other way.

Losing 2 out of 3 to the craptastic White Sox doesn't sit well with this Mariner fan...

..But, I'll be over it in about 12-15 hours since it's an off day tomorrow.

Also, it's never good when you have Mike Fontenot hitting third.

It's fine when he's hitting the way he has been lately.

Yeah, what was the deal there? They take 2 out of 3 at Fenway, but drop 2 of 3 at the Safe to the White Sox?!

Except that he is not a #3 hitter. Fontenot is a 7 hole hitter at best, and he has been having Brooks Conrad syndrome at shortstop lately.

As long as Kung Fu Panda is on the shelf, Cody Ross should hit third ahead of Posey, Huff, then Burrell. Fortunately Andres Torres will be back soon, that way Aaron Rowand can go back to doing what he does best, riding pine.
