2011 MLB Season Thread

Both Fox Sports and lead MLB voice Joe Buck are open to having longtime Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully call part of this year?s World Series. In a statement released last week, Fox said that it would consider having Scully join Buck and Tim McCarver ?for a few innings during the World Series? if he were interested. For his part, Buck told the Los Angeles Daily News that he would ?happily step aside? for Scully and ?not fight that at all.?

Anything that gets Joe Buck away from a microphone I'm all in favor of.

It's actually embarrassing how awful he is at baseball. I remember when he was calling Yankees-Red Sox earlier in the year, and aside from his other awful qualities, he was putting zero effort into it. He seemed so disinterested in the game and it was ridiculous. It was basically his way of saying "Is it NFL season yet".

Halladay vs Weaver in tomorrow's All Star Game. I wanted Vogelsong to start for the NL, but you can't really argue against Halladay starting. Weaver is a good choice to start as well.

With Buck I almost want to defend him simply because its just too easy to criticize him. Its like trying to argue that the sky is blue. There's no fun for me in pointing out the obvious.

He's basically the poster boy for the nepotism in the world. No talent, was never under any real pressure to work at this skill, just call some college basketball games for a year so we can at least justify you have experience, faces no job related consiquences from any criticism he gets and was handed a job all-time greats have put 20+ years of work into before even being looked at when he was still in his 20's.

The best defense I can come up with for him is that he's not the worst announcer in the world and that he was a victim of being pushed to the top way too fast. But that's not exactly a defense of him being in the spot where he's in though. Far from it.

I do blame Fox more then I do Joe Buck for allowing to him even be in the position he's in right now. They refuse to respond to any criticism he gets, and its just about universal in the sports world. They're job should be to produce the best quality broadcast of baseball possible, but it seems like they have some alterior motive(s) when it comes to Joe Buck. Joe Buck is our announcer and that's it. Ratings and PR be damned.

No chance Vogelsong was starting. Most people expected it to be Jurrjens...

Yea I would argue that Vogelsong took Tommy Hanson's spot. I'm pretty disappointed that JJ isn't starting. But I can't say I'm surprised.

I wouldn't say so. Vogelsong has been absolutely nails this season and his starts are a big reason why San Francisco is 3 games up in the West despite being so badly hurt. And his only loss came in a 1-0 game to Flirida where Anibal Sanchez just made the Giants hitters look foolish all game. Cain has been solid enough to deserve a bid too. Lincecum, on the other hand though... As much as I love the guy, and as much as it pains me to say it, he should've been left off of the NL squad.

So the Tigers are in first place heading into the all-star break again. I'm not too excited after seeing the 2nd half collapses the last 4 years, so lets see how this division pans out.

The only thing that could be a little dumb with tonight's HRD would be the wall out in Center Field in Chase Field. There's a huge wall there and an arbitrary line that dictates what's a home run and what's not, even though there's a wall with padding where the normal home run height is. Other than that, and having to hear Chris Berman mention the pool 30 times in 2 hours, it should be pretty good.

Oh, and when Berman goes on his usual "HELLO *SUBURB*!!!" trick-pony 6 batters in, I'll probably give a chuckle if he says "HELLO GLENDALE!" because of the whole Coyotes situation

Just think in two years the HR Derby will be at Citi Field and some one will win by hitting a whopping five home runs, as many more crash against the Great Wall of Flushing in LF.

Random thought of the day...

Has anyone played for more teams while playing their entire career in one league than Johnny Damon? I couldn't think of anyone with more than 6.

Mike Morgan played for seven different teams in the AL. The A's, Yankees, Blue Jays, Mariners, Orioles, Twins and Rangers.

Matt Stairs also has six in both leagues.

Upon further research, Jose Canseco also played for 7 teams - all in the AL. I had no idea he played for the White Sox.

Yankees win...thaaaaaaaaaaa Yankees win!

If they didn't already, the entire league may have just found out how good Robbie Cano is. He made that look easy especially in the final round. I don't even think he was tired after it. Very nice moment to see him with his father afterwards.

You know, Jeter getting his 3,000th hit should be celebrated, no matter which of the 29 Major League Baseball teams he plays for. It's a traditional milestone. Of course, I'd ALSO celebrate 3,001 and his otherwise ascent up the list of hits. He keeps this up for another six or seven years, he might pass Pete Rose.
