International Fútbol Tournaments and World Cup Qualification

Keep in mind that while it was played in the US, it was not run by US Soccer; it was run by CONCACAF.

CONCACAF needs to do more to balance the crowds, then. I can understand HFA for smaller matches, but for the Gold Cup final, one team should not have 80+% of the crowd in their corner.

Doesn't "The Market" allow those who have money to buy tickets allowed to get seats to the finals? Plus most seats at the rose Bowl are bench seats and we know that white/black people have a bigger 'expectation' for a nearly $100 ticket. They want a SEAT! The Super Bowl fiasco proved that the littles want a seat with a chair back in the USA.

What the :censored:? Seriously?

I don't have a big issue with the crowd being mostly Mexicans. Heck, Canada has to put up with this :censored: as well. If this was a Canada-US hockey final in Minnesota and the majority of the crowd were cheering for Canada, would that be such a big issue?

No Canadians are more polite.

I know this is a 'Canadiens are really nice' stereotype joke, but I just want to say that I went to the Gold Cup semifinals two years ago and the Mexican fans were some of the nicest I've seen at a sporting event. Granted the US played in the first match and Mexico afterwards, but the Mexican fans were all really nice talking to us and even helping us out with some of the Spanish cheers.

This is very true.

When TFC was playing against Cruz Azul in the champion's league last year I met a lot of very friendly Mexican people while waiting in line to get in the stadium. Granted they took abnormally long to open the gates that day so we were united in being annoyed.

I went to David Beckham's first game with the Galaxy during the World Series of Soccer in 07 at the Home Depot Center, and If it weren't for the Beckham fan fare (most of the "fans" bailed as soon as he left the game), the earlier game between Tigres and some Japanese club would've outdrawn the Chelsea vs Galaxy match. I'm not gonna be "that guy" who says that soccer in America has no following, because for a niche (at least in the American perspective) it does really well, but the support for the game pales in comparison to what it is in Mexico, and I doubt it will ever have a really substantial following (again, from the American perspective). With all of the pro leagues we have so much time, money, and passion invested into, it's going to be extremely hard for soccer to ever catch up.

But then again, we all know this already and this isn't new information. I like soccer and hope it grows in popularity over the next few decades exponentially as it has in the last few. But lately it seems as if many expect us to step up and compete on an off the field with countries where the game is vastly more popular. It simply won't happen over night and will take some time. Right now we can't really expect to continuously and consistently compete, but some day a decade or so down the road, we might.

Sorry guys, this isn't really Gold Cup related, but I just have a few questions about the qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. I really just started following international soccer during last years World Cup so I'm kind of lost. First off, what is the significance of the draw in Brazil on July 30th? Is that just to determine how many bids each confederation gets? Also, I understand that the CONCACAF qualifying has already started but the U.S. is the 1 seed, so they won't have to play until the third round. So when will they be playing their qualifying games? Will it be sometime in the near future, or is that more down the road? Sorry for all of the noob questions I'm sort of new to the sport. Thanks guys.

The significance of the draw in Brazil is who plays who during qualifying for the World Cup. The bids are allocated like so for 2014 Brazil:

Europe (13)

Africa (5)

South America (4.5 + Brazil)

Asia (4.5)

North America (3.5)

Oceania (0.5)

As far as the US starts, assuming it's around the same time as last cycle, it'd be August or September of 2012. Assuming the US would finish in the top 2 of the 4-team group, the hexagonal final round would be contested in 2013.

Oh wow so qualifying takes nearly 2 years? I never knew that. And about the draw- That's just to find out which confederation plays which like the 4th placed North American team and the 5th placed Asian team?

Actually, all of the groups are drawn that day. For instance, all nine Europe groups will be drawn, as will the 10 African groups. But yes, they do draw out the halfs on that day as well.

No. It's to determine who plays whom within their confederations. Each confederation has a slightly different setup, mind you.

Wikpedia has some good information on the qualification process.

Yeah I was reading that, I couldn't really understand it much though. As I said before I'm kind of new to following soccer, so it didn't make much sense to me. Thanks for the help though guys. Much appreciated.

Most qualifying takes roughly 15 months. (Autumn 2012 through to early winter 2013, ready for the finals draw in December 2013).

The first qualification games for the 2014 World Cup were finished today. It was the first leg of the AFC first round. Most likely, none of these countries will even get close to qualifying. The second leg takes place this upcoming Monday, June 3.

Also, I'm changing the title to "International Fútbol Tournaments and World Cup Qualification" considering the Gold Cup is past and forgotten (kinda).

On the 2013 Confederations Cup front, Mexico (and Costa Rica) should be heading down to Argentina for the 2011 Copa América. The winner will move on to the Confederations Cup in 2013. Since Brazil is hosting the Confederations Cup, the highest finishing team that is not Mexico or Costa Rica will advance to the 2013 FIFA World Cup "test run". So, basically, this tournament is an overly complictated induction of Argentina into the upcoming Confederations Cup.

Also, 2014 World Cup qualification kicks off this Wednesday, June 29, with some first round AFC action (as if any of those teams will actually qualify for the World Cup).

I could see Paraguay, Uruguay or Chile coming away with it, but the Albiceleste will probably win.

First qualifying game actually took place about 2 weeks ago when Belize beat Montserrat 5-2. Second leg has been postponed because Belize's federation has been suspended for not rpoviding proper security for players and officials. By July 3rd the first 8 Asian teams will already be out of contention for 2014.

edit: Also, another edition of the FIFA rankings came out today. AM I really supposed to believe that in the past month Mexico became better than 19 more teams and is now the ninth best team in the world? Some of the drastic drops/rises in these things are comical.

How about Brazil? They can still win it, but they just wouldn't go to the Confederations Cup.

I am, too. Why are Norway, Montenegro, and Turkey ranked so high?

They'd still go, of course, as they host the Confederations Cup. In theory, you can finish in 4th place and advance, if Brazil, Mexico, and Costa Rica are the top 3.

Mexico is not better than Argentina right now. That has to be a joke.

I am pretty sure FIFA rankings are not meant to be taken seriously.

Part of why Mexico's ranked higher than Argentina is because Mexico just finished a cup trophy and Argentina's cup (that Mexico also gets to compete in) hasn't started yet, therefore Mexico has more recent victories to aid its cause.

But yeah, FIFA rankings are a joke.
