infrared41
Also there will be no Cliff Lee deal this year. He has been taken off the trade block by the Phillies. He would have just come back the the Phillies next season anyway so why bother?

If he wants to make a career out of being a hired gun, fine with me. Ain't the first to do it and won't be the last. He just may be stuck in Philly for awhile as a consequence. I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't get that many offers for him. I think teams are just tired of calling about Cliff Lee.

I'm not even sure Cliff Lee knows why it was a good idea to go to Seattle over Philadelphia anymore. Still managed to get to Texas but I'm not sure that Rangers would be a better team then the 2010 Phillies plus Cliff Lee. That providing of course they could have gotten past the Giants in the NLCS, which we'll never know.
BrySmalls
After trading away Pence and Victorino, the Phils beat Strasburg 8-0 in DC. Baseball is a funny gameVery fickle indeed! I've never underestimated the Phils' chances against the Nats in DC. I guess the pro-Phils crowd sways your perception that way.Nevertheless, there has been one too many ugly defeats for the Nats this season. I hope they show-up tonight and keep the Braves at bay for another week.
pmoehrin
Well A.J. Burnett did something last night he never did for the Yankees.Pitch a shutout. His first one since '06. And he took a no-hitter into the eighth.

And he took a no-hitter into the eighth.Well he did it against the Cubs, so that has to have some sort of asterisk by itI was one of the few Yankee fans who actually wanted to keep AJ around. I really thought he turned a corner after his playoff start against Detroit, but I guess the team didn't see it that way. So of course now he's 13-3 with a 3 ERA and doesn't almost have triple-digit walks. Go figure
BigEd76
The Phils won again, with Schierholtz hitting a HR to put them ahead and Lindblom getting a big K in the 8thVictorino went 0-4 in his LA debutPence went 0-4 in his SF debutInteresting... Kramerica Industries
Rangers deal the Angels a sucker-punch-to-the-gut loss, with the kind of win that turns around the fortunes of both teams.I expect Texas to win tomorrow and to go on a nice run now. The Six
LOL at the Dodgers and Giants farting around with stupid trades just to keep sucking, while the defending champs do nothing and sneak on up. Congrats Arizona on back-to-back division titles.

Kramerica Industries
Arizona has been one streaky team all season, probably to the point of madness for personnel and fans alike. Everytime it seems like they are rounding into form, they go on a six game losing streak, and then when everyone writes them off, well, they go to Dodger Stadium and a sweep a re-tooled Dodgers team that was coming off a rousing road sweep of the Giants. At this point, it's solidly a three team race and it's anyone's best guess who will win the division. But, since someone mentioned Arizona, um, is Daron Sutton ever going to return to the booth?------The Seattle Mariners are one Jayson Nix double away from having gone on a nine game winning streak. As it is, they actually have a +3 run differential, despite a lousy 50-57 record. The Baltimore Orioles are 55-50 with a -60 run differential. Just proving that run differential is an overused statistic, and it doesn't mean as much as we would probably like to believe. Even if I still believe Baltimore is overachieving, and has all season, and is still bound to eventually crash and burn, since the last time they had a winning record entering August (2005), they finally disintegrated in spectacular fashion. I'll still be hoping they can pull of a weekend series victory over the annoying and surging Rays. If they enter September still over .500, then I'll start to really believe in them. In their defense, they are a very, very good road team, so there is that.Meanwhile, my original point - the Mariners are on a massive tear, and they come to New York to face a slumping Yankees team that is 4-9 over their last 13 games*. Something has to give there - Yankees are better than that, and the Mariners are nowhere near that good (no disrespect). Should make for some interesting baseball. *4-9 over their last 13, but they have a positive run differential over that stretch as well (+5). Example #2 in this post of the uselessness of run differential as an indicative stat!

Cujo
But, since someone mentioned Arizona, um, is Daron Sutton ever going to return to the booth?NO. At least not for Fox Sports Arizona. His tenure with the Diamondbacks has got to be done if they've kept him off the air for this long. There's gotta be more going on than just the whole "polo shirt thing". Too bad, because I believe Sutton is one of the better lead-announcers in the game today.
ninersdd
Sigh, half inning in and the Giants are getting boatraced by the Mets 4-0. Depressing if the Mets win 3 of 4 on us in SF. BEAR DOWN ARIZONA!2013/14 Tanks Picks Champion
The Six
Yeah this is pretty much who the Giants are. Another Zito disaster notwithstanding, if the offense hasn't come together by August, it probably won't. I understand giving the new guy time to adjust, but that's not an excuse for anyone else. And the bullpen is still awful.
Kramerica Industries
The Angels are going to regret only managing a split in Texas despite having had the offensive fireworks they had the entire series. They awoke a monster in the Texas offense. And the bullpen is still awful.I thought their bullpen has been pretty solid for most of the year. But since the All-Star break they have looked very pedestrian. The key arm out of the pen has been Sergio Romo who's now sporting an ERA over 2.And this not a team that can afford to have their bullpen go on them. Even with the addition of Pence and Scutaro they just do not have the offense to make up for bad pitching performances. They may have to go out and get another arm via a waiver pickup to help bolster that pen for the second half. They just cannot afford to be all that patient with their bullpen given the moves the Dodgers have made and given how well Arizona has been playing lately if they are serious about playing in October.
