2013 MLB Logo and Uniform Changes

Gold is on the bats and the beaks. Gold is a Cardinals color like tan, green, orange, blue, and yellow are Blackhawks colors.

Blue has been a prominent Cardinals color since 1940. It pairs fantastically with red. And grey. It's not even remotely the same as if the Cardinals wore a gold cap.

I don't have a problem with some of you liking red better, mind you. But I think it's a pretty straight-forward case of preference. There's not a whole lot of valid arguments for or against it beyond "I think it looks better".

Blue is but an accent color on their home uniforms, and may even feature less there than the gold.

Not that I disagree with your preferences assessment at all, just saying that "it's a team color" isn't any more persuasive than the other arguments.

Blue is used on the names, the numbers, the script, the logo and the red cap. It is definitively a team color, unlike yellow which is merely an accent color utilized in the logo.

And that's all my point was. It was to refute the notion that blue is somehow more out of place than gold. Blue touches EVERYTHING.

Additionally, while history is a poor singular justification for a design decision, it can play an important role when paired with design fundamentals and aesthetics. The navy cap overwhelmingly has that.

Again, red vs. blue? Take your pick. But navy is anything but out of place with the road uniforms. It fits right in.

Frankly, I've always been more offended by the road caps that merely change the color of a bill. To me, that's lazy. I've always been a fan of road caps that help establish a different but related road identity.

That's especially true when they'll now look like the Phillies and Reds at home and on the road.

Some additional notes:

• The jersey features new stitching for the birds on the bats. Presumably it's the same technique the Blue Jays unveiled last year. More detail and raised features. The eye will now match the logo instead of just being a dot. All three uniforms will utilize this stitching.

• This is a Saturday jersey.

• No news on the hats, but presumably we'll hear more tomorrow.

• The Cardinals owner, Bill DeWitt, Jr. thinks the Cardinals should be one of those teams that only has two uniforms but supposedly loves this jersey too much not to wear it.

• There will be no numbers on the front of the alternate. The numbers on the front of the homes and roads are supposedly going to be shorter.

From a Cardinals beat writer...

@dgoold: #cardinals likely to go with red hats on the road, but navy hats still in play. Final decision to be revealed today. Navy has advocates.

Official unveiling is tomorrow, but looks like they leaked a photo to the press.

I'll be damned if they don't look good. But I still hate the idea of them.

I had my expectations so low going into this. Well done Cardinals. That is a beautiful jersey to compliment a beautiful set. I suppose that they will wear these jerseys at home, which kind of defeats the purpose of having St. Louis on it. As others have suggested, it could just be to test the waters to see how the fanbase reacts which is understandable. However, the removal of the navy cap, the debut of the "St. Louis" script, and the red piping has actually pushed the Cardinals set into the Top 2 in MLB. I'm a definite fan.

EDIT: I've changed my mind. I actually think that their set in the best in MLB now. This is the best attempt at the cream, vintage invasion so far. Still, the only thing I would have done was tinker around with the angle of the bats, the angle of the script, or even the bat's thickness just to have the 'L' in St. Louis wrap around the bat. I just can't help but notice it appearing to droop. Since it would have been in the middle of the bat with no birds next to it, I think it could have worked. Still, what a beautiful jersey.

And the early word from most Cardinals fans via twitter is what I anticipated from them. They like it.

As long as the Birds on the Bat were there and the Cardinals toss around the buzz word of tradition, Cardinals fans will eat it up. It's new and not awful, so it's awesome.

As for me, I still don't feel right about it.

For caps, I hope it's red at home, navy on the road, and the Sunday alt moves to being paired with this jersey.

I really want to love this jersey, but I just can't. It looks fantastic in a few aspects but there are a few things that do disappoint me. I wish the piping ran down the shoulders instead of down the front. It looks A bit muddled as it is running through the red word mark and down the shoulders would really give this look that classic feel. I also hate how the word mark is so low on the jersey due to the birds on the bat. It's just too much and doesn't work nearly as well as the Cardinals script does.

I also really hope the placket piping doesn't make its way to the primary jerseys. It completely ruined the Giants road jerseys and would do the here.

And just to clarify what I mean about the shoulder piping, this is a good example

I'd also like to see them use a cap similar to that. If they're going to ditch the navy cap, which I hate, a cap similar to that would make it tolerable. The current home cap with the white script would look really out of place.

The only I think I would change is to switch from cream colored jerseys to gray, and just make them the Cards' full-time roads.

So yes. Overall, these jerseys are outstanding. .....and this is coming from a Cubs fan!

This could be a radical implementation, but maybe if the wordmark had the perspective of the bat (reducing in size the more up and to the left you go) similarly to the Baltimore Orioles 2009-2011 "Baltimore" wordmark, any awkwardness about the wordmark that Bucfan is talking about would go away. Or it could look awful, I guess.

One year. Wear 'em for one year. In 2014, move this mark to the roads (NO Piping on primaries). Have no alts and return the caps to their proper place; red at home, navy on road, and Sunday cap.

Gotta say, this is beautiful and I think this mark will look fine on the road uniform. Just hope they don't go to crazy after this. And love that the navy cap is still "in play". Makes me feel a lot better. Maybe they'll eventually return it to the roads.

Agreed on the grey. The vintage white has run it's course in every sport, IMO. This looks like something that would sell like crazy in the Team Store as part of the Cooperstown collection, but it shouldn't see the field...

Guess we can now stop saying that the city name wouldn't look good on their roads...

Are they getting rid of the chain-stitching on all jerseys, or just this one?

Yeah, but except for the eyes, on my initial look I didn't see any difference. Almost like its a chain stitch hybrid.
