Who is the Worst Champion?

Carlos Beltran wasn't on that Astros team.

Kinda realized it too late. Thanks, I knew he went beast mode vs. the Cards in the NLCS (2004). I thought it was the same one w/ Pujols' HR in Game 5 in Houston (2005).

Thing about that series is that the two guys who went off on the Cardinals, Beltran and Jeff Kent, when they lost that series in 04 weren't there when they finally beat the Cards in 05. Funny how that works sometimes.

For my pick, how about the 2002 OSU Buckeyes? Craig Krenzel (where the hell is he now), Maurice Clarette, and the boring but lucky Jim Tressel. Especially that team, especially with the pass interference call in the Fiesta Bowl vs. Miami.

No. There have been far weaker MNC teams in I-A

It's always made me wonder what would've happened in 2005 if they had the healthy SP of that season with the loaded offense they had in 2004. They were one win away in 2004 from getting to the Series, and managed to avoid a carbon copy repeat the next year.

Either way, such a combined team would still get swept by the Soxes. The AL was insanely better then than the NL was in the mid-00s.

For every team that's suggested, there'll be 2-6 homers that step up and say, "HEY - how dare you suggest this wasn't a great team!"

Thus the worst champion of all time? Everybody will agree.

There have been much worse QBs that have won national championships and Maurice Clarrette was a great college running back. Looking at a guy's pro career is not a good way to judge how good a college team was.

Even though the 2012 Kings barely squeaked into the playoffs, I wouldn't really consider them to be among the worst of NHL champions. The only reason I say this is to just look at what they did in the playoffs. They destroyed every team, they went ahead 3-0 in every single series. Brown and Kopitar led the playoffs with an average of one point per game.

Great point. Bad champions do not thoroughly destroy the competition in the postseason like the Kings did.

Plus the Kings started out the year with a crappy coach and upgraded midseason.

Case in point: '95 Nebraska. Ahman Green (who was a Freshman on that team) probably had the best NFL career of anyone on the roster-although to be fair there were plenty of solid if not spectacular future NFL players on that roster.

2001 New England Patriots: Pre-Tom Brady being a God. Gigantic upset in the Super Bowl. No real super stars on this team (Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy maybe?), just a well coached team that meshed well together.

Not to mention Belicheat & Co. got away with videotaping the St. Louis Rams practice.... <_<

I know your Patriots hate boner knows no boundaries, but you do know that entire story was bull :censored:, right?

There was no evidence any walkthrough was ever taped, and the former Patriots employee who came out with that story was later found to be absolutely full of :censored:.

The Boston Herald had to issue a retraction.

2006-Carolina Hurricanes and 2010 Chicago Blackhawks.

54-22-8, #2 conference seed who trumped Rinne, Luongo, and the #1 seeded Sharks before winning the cup in a 4-2 series. Stacked roster.

Where does the "worst champion" part come in?

They weren't really a "worst champion", but an unexpected one for me. I thought the Flyers had it in the bag that year.

As a Flyers fan, I don't think the 2010 Blackhawks were deserving of a "worst champion" moniker. They were an equally matched opponent (in the series) pretty much until Byfgulien leveled Pronger in Game 5. The Cup-winning goal that year was fluky, but otherwise it was a great series. Had the Flyers won the Cup, I think they could have been in the conversation for "worst champion". They snuck into the playoffs in a winner-take-all game 82 for the 7th seed against New York, and it came down to a shootout.

If anything, I think the Blackhawks are one of the better championship teams of recent vintage, up there with the '08 Red Wings and '07 Ducks. The only strikes against them are faltering down the stretch in the regular season (they had like two blowout losses to the Beej in mid-March) and the unavoidable fact that if Martin Erat weren't a functional retard, the crappy Predators probably would have trapped them out of the first round. But if you take the first five months of the season and the next three playoff rounds, they were a gift to the game of hockey.

Let us not forget Keith/Seabrook, Brian Campbell, and John Madden at times being the best #4 center in the league. God damn I miss that team. Damn you, cap penalties pertaining to entry-level contracts. Jonathan Toews literally was too good.

The 2007 Ducks were pretty special. Getzlaf, Perry, Selanne, Pronger, los Niedermayers, Giguere. At least three Hall of Famers there. Kinda hated them, though.

Now, now, now hear me out. Yes they aren't the worst of the worst, but their resume should be noted.

They won half their games by less than 7, and won Big 10 games scoring btw 10-14 points in some of them, with a boring conservative see-and-wait approach by Tressel. After butting San Jose St 50-7, OSU had to hold on to close ugly wins in 6 of their last 7 games (including 3 straight vs. unranked Purdue and Illinois and #14 Michigan). Hardly a powerhouse by the time the Fiesta Bowl came along.

The 2002 Buckeyes may have been the luckiest, but as long as the '84 BYU Cougars have a NC ring, the Buckeyes will never be the worst team to win a college NC. Oh, and the Buckeyes beat "one of the greatest college teams ever" to get that title so they can't be that bad. But I won't even argue that the '02 Bucks weren't the luckiest.

So weird BYU has a national championship. Their schedule was bonkers weak.

http://www.jhowell.n...righamYoung.htm Scroll down to 84. I love this site.

I wanted to come and say that as a sport without playoffs, there cannot be any very weak champions in college football, but geez, quite a decent case for BYU. Going undefeated is always good, but this would never fly today. A bowl win vs. 6-5 (6-6 after the game) Michigan. Wow.
