Rite of Spring '14: Can you fall asleep with a panic switch?

I still can't get over the fact that the Florida frickin Panthers had 2 chances to beat the Devils in the first round that year. To be fair the first 2 games of Phoenix-Nashville were kind of watchable(4-3 and 5-3 scores), but the last 3 games were dull with a combined 6 goals scored.

Man, the 2011 playoffs were really really good.

The only real stinker of a postseason in the last few years has been 2012, when it just seemed like everything that could go wrong did go wrong: that hot mess of a Penguins/Flyers series, Weber on Zetterberg, ultimate shot-blocking Rangers, there was a Coyotes/Predators series. I'm sure it was grand for Kings fans, but I would not call it hockey at its best.

I went to two of those games... not hockey's finest moment.

You also left out that the New Jersey Devils made the finals. One last kick at the can for Brodeur and they had Parise/Kovalchuk/Clarkson/Zajac/Elias playing at a high level in those playoffs, but I don't think anybody outside of New Jersey was interested in seeing them there.

From a personal standpoint, that series was, hands down, the worst possible matchup I've ever seen. And that wasn't too far after seeing Detroit and Pittsburgh (Puke) make the Finals in consecutive years.

I've watched 24 minutes of Flyers playoff hockey so far this season.

In those 24 minutes, their announcers have complained about the referees being against the flyers 781 times, and accused the opposition of diving or faking 514 times.

In 24 minutes.

all I remember is that I fell asleep on games a lot of times during those 2012 playoffs and after a while I don't think it was a coincidence.

I think we're overrating the 2011 playoffs just a bit but the Lightning made a deep run and nearly beat the eventual champions so I really have no complaints with how that year unfolded. Could've been much worse, that's for sure.

But, yeah, remember the Washington Capitals playing 14 games, going 7-7, and every single effing game was a one goal decision? I was complimenting Dale Hunter but really just because I was using victim-of-the-moment analysis and crediting the Caps for not melting down like they were prone to doing under Boudreau for whatever reason. It was much less watchable hockey.

Hossa scores the first goal of the game, and then David Backes scores Hossa by slamming him into the crossbar and into the net. See, dude, this is why people don't weep at the thought of you crapping your pants in a dark room because you got hit in the head too hard.

Loser of the Flyers-Rangers series has a great shot at getting the wooden spoon this year. I don't think anyone has watched 24 minutes of this series.

Is Hawk Harrelson filling-in for the normal Flyers broadcasters?

They are homers. No doubt it. But the calls in this game are definitely lopsided.

Well it's certainly not the worst series of the first round. Montreal vs Tampa Bay took the award for the worst series. The Sharks vs Kings has also been terrible.

Yeah, this Rangers-Flyers series seemed the least-exciting of the 8 to begin the playoffs, at least to me, in terms of "Will I watch it vs. another series?".....

Sharks-Kings and Blackhawks-Blues looked like heavyweight bouts.

Penguins-Blue Jackets had the "Can the new guys make the playoff vets sweat?" feel.

Canadiens-Lightning had the chance to be a fast-paced, offensive-filled series.

Avalanche-Wild was watchable in the sense of "Let's learn who these two teams are".

Bruins-Red Wings had the best team facing off with the team that everyone has some amount of love/hate for, a la Duke, Yankees, Lakers, etc.

Ducks-Stars has the overachieving team against the team that needs to prove themselves.

No real pizzazz for the Rangers-Flyers series. Probably because we see enough of these teams due to NBC and NBCSN airing so many of their games throughout the season. If you're not a fan of either team, why bother watching 4-7 more games of theirs when there's an alternative featuring a team or teams you don't see very often?
