NFL Merry-Go-Round: Relocation Roundelay

The Chargers playing home games in front of road crowds in an MLS stadium is going to be so great. They can monkey around with the Chargers in 2018, but next season's spectacle is going to be so worth it. Especially the first time the Chargers need to adjust their schedule or repaint the field to accommodate a Galaxy game.

So, about Dean running back with his tail between his legs... not happening.

Don't think anyone thought it was going to happen. But it definitely made me laugh on the way home from work last night. The Chargers former flagship station in San Diego (1360 Fox Sports) was yammering on and on during the drive home about how technically the Chargers hadn't left San Diego yet and there was a chance the city could make a bold move to save them. Then as I'm pulling up to my house, the breaking news came out that the Chargers had officially terminated their lease and were in fact gone. Made me laugh.

San Diego heavy hitters making their play to Mark Davis and the NFL in the event Vegas doesn't happen.

This group, led by developer Doug Manchester, would offer $350 million in private money toward an NFL stadium (matching and replacing what the city had previously scrounged up for the Chargers). In exchange they want some development rights to the land around the stadium but not apparently ownership stakes or anything like that.

I'm sure there would be a LOT of fans that would show up for the San Diego Raiders, some because they're already Raiders fans and some out of protest to root for ANYONE but the Chargers now, but how many San Diego based Chargers fans would see the Raiders move into their home town and basically respond like this?

It would be just too weird.

FWIW, the Oakland project may take a turn as Ronnie Lott's backer, Fortress Investment Group, is going to be bought by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank.

Not that the Oakland "plan" was viable in the NFL's view. But that will probably put a crimp in it none the less.

There aren't many San Diego based Chargers fans left. So I doubt anyone would care what their opinion is. And besides they'd still show up once a year when the Chargers were back in town anyway.

San Diego Raiders would be perfect.  It's a given that the Raiders don't really have a true home base, them moving to their third Cali city could be great business.

They'd be the home team every game they play at the LA Chargers.

Well that's a given. The Raiders are now the first team in the NFL that will always have at least 9 home games since all Chargers v Raiders games in LA will be a defacto Raiders home game. And the occasional years they play the Rams have a good shot of making it 10 home games.

No they wont, I don't know how meany times I've said this to people out of the market but outside of east LA Raiders fans are minimal a lot of the causal fans have already jumped to the Rams and the fact that rams have had the majority fans at all of their home games especially the ones against DAL and SF tell me that wont happen. Hell even before the Rams announced their move they were the preferred in all the polls for them to move over the Raiders and Chargers says a lot. the Bring Back the LA Rams group on Facebook had 60,000 people at the time of the relocation meetings, the same group for the Raiders had 15,000 at the time. You are overestimating the Raiders fan base here.

You're right for the most part, but I can assure you that at the Cowboys-Rams game, at least half the fans were Cowboys fans. I was there. My section in particular was dominated by Cowboys fans.

Well, you'll see a lot of Cowboys fans anywhere ^_^ (even in the likes of D.C.).

The Raiders don't belong in Los Angeles, but let's be clear, the Raiders are extremely cool and I will not stand for these allegations of unpopularity and scumbagginess.

Counterpoint:

Mark-Davis.jpg

"Most days start the same — behind the wheel of a white 1997 Dodge Caravan SE outfitted with a bubble-top Mark III conversion kit, a VHS player mounted to the roof inside and a r8hers personalized plate. Mark Davis pilots this machine from his East Bay home to the nearest P.F. Chang's, where he sits at the left end of the bar, same spot every time, puts his white fanny pack on the counter, orders an iced tea and unfolds the day's newspapers. Beside him on the bar, next to the papers, is his 2003 Nokia push-button phone with full texting capability. When someone calls and asks him where he is, he says, "I'm in my office," and sends a knowing nod to the bartenders. It gets 'em every time."

"During one dinner with a group that included his mother and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, Davis inexplicably handed a piece of paper to McKenzie with the corners torn off.

"This is what I need you to get me," Davis said.

McKenzie, flummoxed, turned the tiny triangles over in his hands.

Seeing nothing, McKenzie gave up. "What is this?" he asked.

"Two corners," Davis said. "I need you to get me two corners."

"In perfect Davis family fashion, it's a middle finger to convention. Davis travels to Palm Desert to get it cut, just as he traveled to Chico from Oakland to visit a preferred barber long after he left college at Chico State. "I think he's had three barbers since college," [former Raiders WR Cliff] Branch says. "If he likes something, he stays loyal."

Wait that's a real story? I thought all the stuff about P.F. Chang's was a ccslc meme.
