NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

I wonder if the opposition was stilted by the fact that no one gives a damn about hockey in Glendale. If people can't be bothered to show up to games, clearly they can't be bothered to sign a petition. And knowing nothing about Glendale, is there even some kind of town square where Glendalians can be gathered to sign stuff? Do you pass the petition around at church? Do you stand at Westgate outside of the Rainforest Cafe?

I think they had to be on public property, so no Westgate. I think they sat outside a library or a pool or something. They also had a Coyotes fan club harassing them and prospective signatories.

There's the problem right there. Didn't they have the libraries or pools or somethings closed down to pay for this ludicrosity in the first place?

Libraries, police, city hall. It's all being sacrificed. It won't be long before city hall's a combination Taco Bell/KFC. It'll be ok though, because the Coyotes will still be around, playing in front of 8,000 people a night

It could also be that we've already lost the season and only the NHL owners and union heads know it. No need to move the Coyotes when they won't lose any money next year.

That sounds like a very NHL move to me. Let's not bother moving a team that loses tens of millions of dollars every year, because we're gonna ALL lose hundreds of millions of dollars this year!

You see Glendale has rejected the other referendum too challenging the tax hike that will pay for this misadventure. They rejected it because they didn't include their group's serial number on the petitions. Talk about a technicality. They've already sued the city over it. Hopefully the judge throws the book at Glendale in the interests of justice. A serial number has no bearing on the text of a referendum or whether people would be misled by it.

You really can't fight city hall, huh.

Part of me wants to admire the tenacity of this small but proud bunch of Coyotes fans until I stop and deconstruct what it really comes down to, which is "we want you to pay a billionaire to entertain us with no risk on our part because we don't live here," which is of course rather a unsavory demand to make of a city that's practically broke. Interesting that the cabal of Chelmdate councilors who have hijacked the city government appear to be Democrats of the corporatist variety. A tent too big.

All of that is, of course, dependent on Jamison actually having the money to pay for this bs deal that technically nets him a subsidy more then what he'd pay for the team anyway. Which he doesn't. According to him.

FWIW the Avalanche will host the Rangers in Kansas City on October 6th in the "we're going to gauge interest on a team here but it really means nothing and nothing will come of it" annual pre-season game there.

And, as is the tradition, the fans of Kansas City will manage to make the fans of Phoenix look spectacular by comparison. I pity any team that would actually move there.

Not turning up to a meaningless preseason game between two teams who have no historical basis in the city ≠ not turning up if there was a team based in the city, playing full on competetive hockey

The counter-argument is that if a market won't show up to exhibitions which are being staged as trial balloons to gauge fan interest, why plunk down a couple hundred million dollars on the hope they actually will show once there's a hometown team?

Averaging 5,500 a game for top-tier minors 12 years ago is not a suitable exhibit to prove current major-league market interest, either.

That is a perfectly valid point. I just don't think that markets should be excluded based on one game's ticket sales.

Besides pretty much literally anything is better than Glendale at this point.

I totally agree. It's a good way to evaluate the facility and the city itself (like lodging, etc.), but attendance is nearly meaningless. Maybe if it was a regular-season game with superstar players, but I don't blame anyone for not showing up to watch pre-season exhibition between teams that they have no rooting interest in. I don't think anyone is sitting around caling his buddies saying "dude, we got to get tickets - this is our chance to prove ourselves as a viable market!!!".

Slap a local city name on a sweater and people seem to rally behind it more... in places other than Chelm-dale.
