Not trying to pick on you but Joe Buck just said something along these lines during the broadcast and it brings up something that really bugs the hell out of me.

This tendency to count Super Bowl victories only when talking NFL championship totals by team is a tendency that needs to stop. NFL championships won prior to 1966 are still championships. It's not those teams faults that the NFL Championship was called something different. So, with all due respect to New England and Pittsburgh (Christ what an awful sentence), their six or soon-to-be six Super Bowls still don't get them even close to Green Bay's NFL-leading 13 championships. Counting championships by Super Bowl era-only would be like counting World Series wins since 1961, or Stanley Cup's since 1967 (or NBA championships since...ABA/NBA merger). It's something that literally no one in those sports does, and we shouldn't do it in the NFL either.

I don't have a problem with discounting NFL championships from 50+ years ago or Original Six Stanley Cups. The leagues weren't much to speak of then. Not to say they didn't happen, but there's a difference.

As for the Eagles, my prime NFL-watching years were 2001-2006, so I developed Eagles Fatigue. The whole NFC East in general is kind of ass-chapping if you're not a fan of any of the teams. Frankly, it's all annoying, except for the dopes who dress up as Road Warrior Hawk Zombie BDSM Darth Vader, that's the only NFL culture that goes all the way around from being dumb to being cool.

As a Vikings fan, I'm torn about last week's finish. Part of me wishes Kai would have just missed the field goal to end the season. The game was so embarrassing. It reminded me of the 2013 team that got stomped on most weeks.

I honestly don't see how "fatigue" can set in for a team that's never won a single Super Bowl. Maybe that's just me. I mean, I never developed Niners Fatigue during their run of being good (in this millennium, I should clarify).

Let’s check in with EDP and see how he feels about this...

I'm pretty sure if there's one thing in this universe that could finally put an end to the Patriots dynasty, it's EDP and his rants. If the Eagles find a way to pull it off and win (they won't), his next rant is likely to cause all of New England to break off from the rest of the continental United States and plunge into the core of the earth, Foxborough first.

He's truly the hero that we need, but not the hero we deserve.

But the point was that we don't discount those Stanley Cups. If asked, we'd say Montreal has 24, Toronto has 13, and Detroit has 11 (...I think). We wouldn't say Toronto doesn't have any, and we wouldn't say Detroit only has four.

If this was a consistent thing we did across sports, I'd be ok with it. But we only do this with football, probably because the advent of the Super Bowl provides a neat, if totally arbitrary, line f delineation from what preceded it.

I don't think championships from 100+ years ago should be held to the same standard as ones from the more "modern era".

Frankly, I don't see why NHL counts anything pre-Original 6.

I think the idea with Football is that they were 2 entirely separate leagues.

Baseball I guess is an exception because the game itself hasn't changed that much compared to Hockey or Basketball.

Red Sox: 8    Celtics: 17    Bruins: 6    Patriots: 5

I was only talking about Super Bowls, though, because it's the Steelers fans who love to bring up that they've won the most Super Bowls. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if that title was taken from them.

I agree about the pre super bowl championships being discounted, but I also sort of don't care. There were like 12 teams in the NFL back then.

You didn't earn it.

I don't think success can ever be "earned" by fans.  I think cities deserve runs of success, championships or not, after many years of playing host to many a boot-wiping symphony of losing.

Fans earn nothing.  They have no say in this beyond providing money to the ownership.  Lots of vocal fans can threaten boycotts and such, but it's all hollow.

Lol this is super awkward. So I was born in 2004, which resulted in the Patriots beating the Eagles in Jacksonville in Super Bowl 39, and now it is a rematch being played in the Twin Cities, my hometown.

:P

Also, just noticed, but Jacksonville and Minnesota were the two Super Bowl hosts of Patriots-Eagles.

It ends with the Patriots winning their 7th Super Bowl and becoming the first team to 3-peat all at the same time.

It's about the journey.

Though last night's game was a nightmare, that play from last week is the stuff of legend. It's not like the Broncos don't talk about the Drive or the Fumble just because they followed those up by getting kicked around in the Super Bowl. A great moment like that can stand on its own.

Right. I think you can have confidence that your team's going to win, but the second you feel superiority over someone else because your favorite football team is better is the second you need to take a step back. The only thing fans do is buy stuff that keeps the teams from moving or folding. If fans mattered for what happens on the field then the Bills and Browns would have more than zero combined Super Bowls. Fans don't earn arrogance just because they slid out of their mom somewhere that happens to have a successful local sports franchise. None of these players are even from the same place you're from. We're all just people watching other people play a sport.

I agree that some fanbases deserve to win more than others because they've endured more tough losses than other fanbases. Bill Simmons loves to bring up how the Pats used to suck, but their run of dominance has been going on for so long that I don't think you should be allowed to use that anymore. The Pats have more than made up for their years of mediocrity.

No Boston fan gets to complain about sports losing until at least 2030. If not later. It bears repeating that since 2008, all of their major sports franchises have won at least one championship. Bill Simmons used to talk about a 5-year rule of no complaining, but if all four of your teams win, that gets quadrupled.

There is no other sports fanbase that wants credit for losing as well as winning like Boston. It's been true ever since the Red Sox World Series win in 2004, and it remains so weird. I like Bill Simmons and I like the Ringer, but their coverage of the Patriots remains so tone-deaf as to what the rest of the sports world is actually thinking. Deadspin's headline of "Patriots return to Super Bowl. Barf" is exactly right.
