No updates. No new meetings with Long Beach and although Anaheim is in sporadic communication they’re waiting for an appraisal of the stadium land to use as negotiation leverage.

It makes the most sense from a transportation standpoint. They have a Metrolink station right in the parking lot and a dedicated carpool exit off the 5 that sends you right in.

Yeah, there just aren't a lot of other places to plunk down a park, are there? As a good populist I hate to see parks getting smaller and smaller in terms of seating capacity but that's the way it's going, and I'm guessing even nosebleeds for an Angels game were still a little steep.

As cool as a stadium in downtown Long Beach would be, I have to agree. It just makes too much sense considering how much space they have around there for parking. I'd have to imagine the total cost of building in the parking lot of Angels Stadium vs downtown Long Beach would be a LOT less considering the infrastructure is already there.

The deal was broadly characterized in the media as extending the team’s lease through the end of 2020. Some people took that to mean if there was no new deal by that deadline, the Angels would need a new home and the stadium property would be free and clear for whatever the city chose to do with it, Moreno said.

Went out to San Diego three summers ago and took the Pacific Coastliner up to Anaheim to see our team play the Angels.  Took it up on a Sunday afternoon.  Took it back to SD that afternoon.  One of our best memories.  It was beautiful.  The train literally drops you off under the overpass and you can walk through the parking lot to the stadium.  Would do it all over in a second.  Angels park seems a bit dated in terms of the slope of the seats and the concourse.  The stadium is beautiful, but you can tell the stadium is a late 60s multi-purpose stadium that's been retrofitted and fixed up over time.  It still works.  It just had an older feel to it.

Any stadium that has concourses that aren't completely open is outdated.  I get that it's nearly 30-years old, and I totally get its historical significance, but I couldn't believe how old Camden Yards felt when I was there a few weeks ago, and if Angels Stadium has the same type of arrangement, I'd try to get out of that too.  The fan experience is a million times better in open-air stadiums - not only in the concourses, but having airflow into the stands makes it much less muggy.  Sitting in that stadium was downright uncomfortable.

Frankly, the surprise is that we'll make it to 2020 with 2 teams in the SF Bay Area. 

 

Las Vegas is far from a sure thing, but I have to say I was impressed at how much Knights paraphernalia I saw last time I was out there. I'm sure their insane first year helped, but I was impressed with how much they've embraced that team. It'd be interesting to see if they could support 3 team who moved there pretty much back to back to back.

This a countermeasure to Oakland suing over the coliseum site. I doubt much comes of this, aside from trying to push Oakland to not lose all of their teams.

I don't see it happening, but it would be miserable if it did. Not only is Vegas not even in the top five of cities that would be good fits for an MLB team, but to move such a storied franchise to a city devoid of baseball history would be egregiously bad.
