Texas Rangers Go Powder Blue, Unveil Five New Uniforms

December 4, 2019 - 19:39 PM

“Lean into the future with a nod to the past” The Texas Rangers today showed off their uniform changes coinciding with their move into their new ballpark for the 2020 season. All four of the uniforms that were used by […]

Oof, this is NOT good.

While I do like that they changed back to “Rangers” at home, making the switch to the script just on the home set is baffling. It doesn’t match anything in their set, and is a bummer because They could’ve kept the block font they use on the other sets and just changed it to RANGERS.

That powder blue alt is straight up yikes, though. Not a fan of that in the slightest.

The Rangers went from being a little bit of a mess to a complete and total mess.

A dropshadow that makes it look like a mess?  Not surprised.

In general I like the idea of going with a script "Rangers" and it was way past time to not use TEXAS at home. But I'm not feeling the script. It works reasonably well on the white, I guess, but I don't think it's among the better scripts in MLB. It's messy on the powder jersey.  I think they wanted to work both red and their regular blue in.  I think they should have skipped the latter.

Powder blue went from being "wouldn't it be fun to bring these back?" to "god dammit, everyone is trotting these out and we've ruined another fun thing because of course we did."

And who's to blame?  All of you stupid bastards out there who bought the Christ out of anything and everything powder blue.  And black.  And navy.  And camo.  And pink.  Etc.

Stop.

Buying.

This.

Garbage.

When you see them all together, it’s definitely overwhelming in a bad way. Individually, I like the new home script uniforms (white and powder), and the rest are essentially the same as before with different sleeve piping. I like how the new piping looks on the grays and whites but the solid alt tops look messy.

I think if they went with the white home, powder blue, gray road, and one or the other solid alt (preferably blue) the set would be a little more concise.

I haven’t seen the back of the actual jersey yet, but the renderings show an inconsistent white outline on the back numbers that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Having seen the jerseys now, it’s not inconsistent (the powder blue has a noticeable outline too), it’s just a consequence of the other jerseys having colors that make the outlines blend in with the jersey colors. They could have still gone with grey or powder blue outlines on those jerseys though.

What a disaster.

New RANGERS font seems so out of place on the white jersey. Should have just stuck with previous font if they want to incorporate RANGERS on a white jersey.

The powder blue seems so out of place. Especially with that cap. Something about it feels so forced -- probably because it just doesn't fit with this identity.

And if you're going to use this new RANGERS wordmark, then don't have the name and number on back be a completely different custom font. With a custom wordmark, the name and number should be a standard font. But with this, it's just all too much. And you add in this unnecessary drop shadow effect (and the road gray forcing a white trim on the negative space) you got this real cluster of a look.

The new TR state logo feels like too much also. There doesn't seem to be much cohesion with this new wordmark and forced powder blue. A complete downgrade.
