The NFL's almost hit the point where there's just too much of it, if not already. You have your regular early/late games on Sunday; Sunday nights; Monday nights, Thursday night; even Saturday when the college season is over. That's four out of seven days every week. Plus the NFL Network all day, every day, if you need to catch up on every minute bit of the offseason. Part of the allure of the NFL used to be it was a couple nights a week a few months a year. Now you almost can't get away from it.

This would seem true, and would logically make you think the NFL is over extending itself, but what actually happens?  In August, there will be Yankees/Red Sox game with huge playoff ramifications on ESPN that will get destroyed in the TV ratings by a random Texans/Eagles preseason game.

They’d be the ones approving it, they have no legitimate reason to sit out since they are the ones that are Collectively Bargaining with the league

you’re trying to explain to someone that 2+2=4 when they keep insisting that it’s 5, then claim they meant 3, then double down on 7.

It’s four.  Goddam four.

I have a feeling this will happen

Me too. Giving London a full slate with a league’s worth of teams rather than relocate a team there full-time actually seems like a pretty savvy idea. It fully taps into the European market without upsetting a current NFL market. It’s such a good idea, in fact, that it makes the hairbrained looking “17th game”, which on the surface looks stupid as all hell, completely worth it. They could charge a premium every single week and only inconvenience teams once a season rather than all year.

I would care to guess that the NBA, NHL and MLB are watching the NFL CBA talks very carefully because I think one of those CBA talks will be more contentious than the NFL.

They ain't watching. NFLPA is clearly the weakest of the four and has been for decades, even before the current ten year CBA.  MLB players have had lifetime healthcare for decades and they receive it with just ONE DAY of service time.  They are vested in the pension system following just 43 days of service.

Even dirty a$$ Billy Hunter, who kept his family on the NBPA payroll for years was even better at getting a 50/50 revenue split.

*This should go with my post above.

+1, IF the CBA thing passes--with one caveat: that they chop.off one preseason game. I think three preseason games is enough, if they want to do the 17-game thing with the 17th being a floating neutral-site London/Mexico City/Toronto/Tokyo/Paris/Sydney/Nairobi/Doha/New Delhi exhibition thing.

That said, they can pump the brakes on the whole February takeover thing. I am curious about one thing, though: is that the NFL's counterstrike to the beginning of the XFL's season? Hmmm.....

They've been trying to expand the season since at least 2010 when they tried to expand the season to 18 games. Don't think they see the XFL as anything other than a place they can get some players or ideas.

I don't get why they'd rather expand into February than into August. I get not wanting to have the season open on labor day weekend, but the could kick off the last week of August, especially since they're lopping off a preseason game. There must be a reason they don't want to start earlier, but I've never heard it.

It has to be the heat because we all know that the NFL cares about player safety!

Last week of August is still in prime vacation season for lots of folks, and in lots of areas - including Phila - many people have shore homes and are away every single weekend until after Labor Day. While I’m no fan of the league running all through February, starting in August would be a mistake.

if they could wrap it up on Presidents’ Day weekend, then it would make the super bowl a de facto holiday, which I’m sure they’d love. On the other hand, 3-day weekends are prime get away times, and it’d suck to be at a ski cabin or somewhere else and have to alter your plans because you want to watch the game.

I'm as guilty of this as anyone. Every year I tell myself I'm sticking to Bengals games and the odd Sunday night matchup, then I get invested in an Eagles - Bears game just because they have two of my favorite uniforms.

In fairness, the Bengals have icky uniforms (aside from Color Rush) and have had several bad years in a row...
