You can gloat, but it's lost on Americans, most of whom were cheering for Canada, anyway.

Well, not a majority, but a third.

The twitter reactions of "patriots" celebrating the USWNT's loss is gross. Heaven forbid the men flame out early in basketball; I expect worse then.

This USWNT is at the end of its road. Sometimes if things don't end badly, they don't end at all.

That's ok. A lot of Americans refuse to admit we won the War of 1812 too 😛

It's really tragic. These athletes train at unG-dly rates to be the best at their craft, and go to perform for their country on the world stage.

They deserve better.

A lot of Americans don't even know that the War of 1812 happened. And I'm pretty sure people around here only know about it because we have a fort to remind us.

I think all that was taught in school is that the Whitehouse was burned down, and Francis Scott Key wrote The Star-Spangled Banner. It's pretty pathetic.

It really should have been called the war of 1812-1815.

I saw, I came, I left.

It's because they see Megan Rapinoe as the face of the USWNT, and she stands for everything these "patriots" are against.  So are Team NBA in basketball.

It looks that way. They were "off" in this tournament. In many ways, it's actually a good thing to know now because now you have a good idea on how to evaluate the squad for the next World Cup much like what happened in 2016.

I saw, I came, I left.

The dislike of this USWNT,  isn't  only because of politics.

I can remember the on-field antics of this squad, during the 2019 Women's World Cup in France, pissing off a lot of people.

The obnoxious over-celebration of EVERY frickin' goal in their 13-0 demolition of Thailand,

certainly won them the 2019 Ugly American Team Award.

Today's loss looked good on them.

Good on ya' Canada! 👍

Yeah, I'm not going to pretend like I could've cared at all about the competition - I didn't - but ever since that 13-0 game where they were celebrating the goals all the way up to 13...I'm just going to say I wasn't particularly disappointed with the news I heard this morning.

But it also goes a bit further than that. At the risk of making a huge hot take here...the older I get, the more I find something extremely superficial about rooting for "your" national team or athletes, in any international competition. So those people were born on the same soil I was...so what? They didn't choose to be born in the US. I didn't choose to be born in the US. They aren't any better than people born elsewhere just because they were born in the US (and I sure as hell am not any better than others not born in the US).

I'm not saying these competitions can't be enjoyable. I watch the Olympics - especially the Winter games - and I enjoy events like the Euros and World Cup. And I'm certainly not endorsing my views on anybody else, because I'm guessing most people will think my views on this suck (and you're probably right). But whether an American athlete or team wins a given competition...good for them, I guess, I'm sure they earned it, but rooting for them just because of the flag on their uniforms? Means nothing to me.

And not surprisingly, NBC had to plug Sunday Night Football during their primetime broadcast tonight.  This came after Anna Cockrell advanced to the finals of the Women's 400 Meter Hurdles and Mike Tirico mentioned her brother, Ross Cockrell of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers watching that race.

You root for your country for the same reason you root for your local sports team: it's fun to have a dog in the fight

I understand where you are coming from. I went back to that 2019 world cup thread and I did not have a problem with the scoreline or the celebrations then... or now.  It was less a reflection on the US team, but the state of the women's game. The women's game still does not have the quality depth like the men's game. yes, the US has been the most successful nation, but they have not dominated women's soccer like how Canada and US have dominated women's hockey.  You have seen Germany win world cups and and the Olympics,  Japan beat the US in 2011 and seeing a Canada-Sweden gold medal match shows that there are other quality  women's soccer nations. If more nations like Italy, can put together better women's sides, then it is possible that the US will no longer be a favorite at the major tournaments in the coming years.

As for the other point , I think in the context of western nations, we are not necessarily supporting the teams in the context of a nation as we are supporting the organizing bodies. The performances on the playing field are smoke screens to what really goes on behind the scenes. I think a good example is USA Gymnastics. After hearing all about what happened to these athletes (not just the Olympians) and the coverups over the decades, I cannot blame anyone who would have mixed feelings about cheering them on knowing what we know now.

I saw, I came, I left.

People were in an uproar over this, but when men's teams did the same during routs in Champions League, Premier League and other league contests, no one bats an eye.  The discussion was about being ladylike in winning, but are we going to tell the guys to be more gentlemanly when they blow out a team? This tournament shows that they have held on to the stars of the team a bit too long instead of sending them off last summer. Rapino was walking through the Sweden game and she was a sub after halftime. She's a good free kick specialist, but they have plenty of other players that can do that role. Vlatko didn't seem to have a plan, unlike other coaches like Jill Ellis. That's saying something when Jill Ellis is compared favorably to you, because she got hardly any respect when she coached this team.  Playing Horan in spots she's never been good playing from is inexcusable.I'm guessing for the bronze medal game he'll start all of the old timers to give them their testimonial of sorts.

If US Basketball wins, their all going to take a knee during the national anthem aren't they?

If they choose to do so, let them do so. But I don't think we'll see that happen anyways. If anyone does it would probably be Popovich.

Advertising upcoming events happens every year, so it's not something that egregious. But it's pretty damn annoying that they have to announce who someone competing in the Olympics is related to, if that other person is in the NBA or NFL. Just hype up the person competing now and talk about the game later.

they did this with Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, the gold medal 100 meter hurdler from Puerto Rico, who's brother is Bears DE Robert Quinn.  When she won, Ato Boldon (track and field color commentator) said that Jasmine may use the gold medal to tease her brother, who has yet to win a Super Bowl.  During the prelims and semi-finals, they mentioned Colombian 400 Meter Hurdler Melissa Gonzalez in the context of "she's married to Detroit Lions QB David Blough"

It's usually the NFL because they have the TV rights to that.

That's why I love JJ Watt throwing shade on crap like this when people would end articles about his wife by mentioning him.

I didn't watch soccer in the Olympics, but I assumed that they mentioned Julie Ertz being married to Zack Ertz of the Philadelphia Eagles.

I didn't watch as many games due to being on at 3 or 4 in the morning, but I think she doesn't have it brought up as much now that she's a mainstay on the team. They did keep bringing up that Rapinoe's girlfriend, Sue Bird, was the flag bearer this year. I remember them cutting to that picture multiple times this Olympics.
