2022 NFL regular season through Super Bowl LVII

It was intended to allow teams to not play injured players by letting them sit the guys who were hurt.  If a team chooses to NOT dress a third QB (or even carry one on their roster), that's on the team, not on a league rule.

Right.  Otherwise you'd see more IRing even if it's only a couple-week injury.  Would have been worse when IR was the whole season, but I think that's the spirit of the rule.

Coaches are always going to want more.  Give them 46, they'll want 47.  Give them 53, they'll want 60.

IIRC, it used to be 45 + emergency QB, and if you put him in, then QB1 and QB2 were officially done for the day.  Then they made it 46 and said "use it however you want".  It's totally on the teams.  For a regular season game, then sure - don't use a 3rd-string QB and if 1 and 2 get hurt, then figure it out later and come back next week.  But for a game against the best DL and most sacks in the league, with QB1 being a rookie, it would probably have been wise to have a QB3 on the roster since there's no next week.  I'm not saying it's a no-brainer, because you're probably Fd either way, and it's unlikely they would have put up enough points regardless, but it was still a choice that they consciously made.

There’s a good idea somewhere in here, but this ain’t it. Flag football is really boring.

I figure that, at least for the spectator, might be chalked up to the fact that flag and tackle may use the same ball, but tend to be so different that strategies that work in flag tend to not work in tackle, and vice versa.  What I mean by this is that while flag rulesets universally substitute flag pulls for tackling, few of them substitute anything for the act of blocking, and consequently, unlike tackle, there are no dedicated linemen.  Ergo, flag strategies tend to look like there are too many moving parts.

This dude explains it much better than I did, and offered solutions.

I really like CMcC and think he's an elite player (hot take, I know), but he comes off really dumb here.  They DO LET YOU HAVE A THIRD QB.  They ended the emergency QB thing, and expanded the roster to accommodate.  Teams consciously choose to not use that spot for a QB.  That's on the coach.  Maybe they should change the rule and require an OL to block a DL, then we're not having this conversation.

Stolen from you? They lost by 24! I think I might possibly have more sympathy for the Niners had they not, like,  gotten completely dominated and tripped over their own dicks all game long. I have no idea what they’re on about when it comes to this one.

MVP should have been Hurts.

A good number of ballots didn't even have Hurts in the top 5 - and the Eagles were 14-1 at the time the ballots were taken (per what I heard on radio - haven't confirmed via real news sources.)

Haha now the 49ers kicker is getting in on the crying act.  To a man, they're the saltiest losers (that didn't get beat by the refs).

Mahomes and the Chiefs didn't play the schedule the Eagles did. Mahomes is great, but Hurts was more valuable and had a higher winning percentage as QB this year for an unexpected 1 seed.

People get wrapped up in narrative and miss what's right in front of them.

I really wish they’d change the name to “most outstanding player” - in ALL sports.  It does hurt you if you’re on a totally stacked team like Hurts is, because unless you’re following every game like a local fan would, it’s tough to assess his value until he’s hurt.

Either way, there’s arguments for either to win, so I don’t feel like either would have been “screwed”. Ultimately, Hurts’ injury lost it for him (if you follow Vegas odds, which are typically indicative of who will win).

But no MVP has won a Super Bowl since Kurt Warner in 99 (hard to believe!)

Yeah they get wrapped up in narratives like "had a higher winning percentage as QB this year for an unexpected 1 seed." and how the Chiefs are gross and make us feel icky, causing them to miss what's right in front of them like Mahomes having 10 more total TDs, 1200 more total yards, and setting the record for most total yards ever while not missing any games.

Exactly. Glad you see what I see.

This would seem to make it clear that Tom Brady is really done and not coming back to play in 2023.

Do you know what he has to do to un-retire? File a letter with the NFL.  This does nothing.

EDIT - I'm not saying he isn't retired. But this means nothing. Schefter knows that, but sometimes you agree to tweet things for favors, either future, current or past.

No argument here. I'd already forgotten how bad those Browns uniforms were. Good Lord, what a disaster.

Doesn't it feel like sometimes teams go out of their way to have the ugliest possible matchup?

Yes. Especially when it's prime time game.

It's not going to stop Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio and others to say that he's coming back in 2023.

Because it does nothing to prevent him from coming back. Acting like this is the proof is just being obtuse.

Again, he may truly be done, but this doesn't mean that.

It's where I sit.

Some will only accept that he's truly retired when he's not on an NFL roster during week 18 of the NFL season.

To paraphrase Bill Murray playing Hunter S. Thompson in the cinematic classic Where the Buffalo Roam* - "I'll believe Tom Brady is dead when I'm gnawing on his cold, dead skull." Until then, all bets are off.

*I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I'm the only person on these here boards who has ever seen that movie.
