MLB 2023 Uniform/Logo Changes

Those feel like a real downgrade from last year's Spring Training caps. I thought last year's were really strong. Something about these new ones looks cheap by comparison. I'm sure it'll vary team by team, but that Padres hat might be the only product that makes me question whether going to back to brown was a good idea. That hat is unappealing.

I swear New Era does not know how to stay out of their own way. White paneled hats are going to clash badly with a lot of teams’ on-field gear. On the bright side, I’ll be saving money again this year avoiding bad looking hats.

This photo makes it look like a normal Astros hat got left on a dashboard in the Texas sun

the only thing about this hat that ticks me off is it proves someone knows how to give an Astros hat the appropriate squatchee. Now if they could do the same for the orange brimmed hat…

(the Angels underbrim looks to be black, which is probably a mistake)

Not entirely sure there. If I remember correctly, the Angels wearing black underbrims was a big-brain move they came up with in the mid-2000s, claiming that it was a more effective protection from glare than the prevailing grey underbrims. Then, when New Era switched over from wool to polyester, everyone else got switched. They might still be insisting upon it.

Giving each team a white panel is fine I guess... certainly not the worst thing that could happen. My main issue is the white logo for each team. Taking away the color from each logo confuses me, as it leaves each one looking a little incomplete and less identifiable than their standard caps. Not to mention they'll be illegible from afar, with some being barely legible up close.

Also, is this the first season that the league has separate caps for spring training and batting practice? I thought that spring training caps have served as the teams' BP caps for the last few seasons.

Agreed. The white front panels are fine (not great, but tolerable) but the white logos on top of that are awful. There's barely anything to see here. So bland.

I agree with this. At first glance, it feels like a logical extension from last year's caps, in which the logos were the same color as the hat, but with a different colored outline. Except in full color (as opposed to white) it seemed to have more character. I really liked the Twins hat.

White front panel caps for a team like the Giants, who wear cream. There hasn’t been a good Giants BP cap in so long, and the ones that have been good were just carbon copies of their primary and alt caps.

They need to bring back these.

It's awesome how Willie seems to have a lifetime supply of these hats too.

I loved a lot of the spring training hats from that style as a kid.

Just saw this posted on shop.mlb.com. I know it's a 39Thirty but still seems very different then the previous ones shown, which are no longer listed. This lines up with the ones from last year.

Seems like the Spring Training caps manage to get worse and worse every season.

They seem to be running out of ideas. They had some neat concepts back in the day, but they are looking increasingly like the design was scraped out of the bottom of the proverbial barrel. It's disappointing when we've had these in the past:

these were solid. the best BP caps, IMO, were the ones that these derived from. they premiered in 2013. "diamond era" performance mesh, 59fifty base, and all kinds of good alternate logos.

Just another example that the merchandise business  requiring new gear every 12 months results in crappier end products. How about sticking with designs for 2-3 seasons at a time rather than continue to churn out garbage? I used to love buying the new spring training caps. Now, I haven’t bought one in ages.

I'd rather they just wear the standard cap but in some kind of super-light material that'll sell well to sweaty heads in the South or something. Most of the alternate designs churned out for these are pretty bad; templated fashion hats are even worse.

Blast from the past! I had a Cleveland cap from this series growing up.
