Yeah I really like this. After seeing them go with the white pants & the BP cap, I was hoping they'd try this combo (I'm not too big on the BP cap, the stars look too "bloated" to me & the stripes don't go all the way around). I think they could afford to go the Rockies' route & wear white pants for day games, & black pants for night games.

On a similar note, the Pirates' identity has kind of descended into a lot of unnecessary mix-&-match combos. Even though they dropped the black home alternate jersey with white outlines, they still wear that hat with the "Pittsburgh" black alternate that doesn't have white in it, and they even have another cap with an extra gold outline. I think the regular black cap is really all they need. There's no need to have 4 (if you count the BP) slightly different black caps.

They also still wear the black Memorial Day hats from 18 I believe. So that makes home, white outline, yellow outline, BP with stars, and Memorial Day. 5 black hats (like you said just need 1) and the gold CC.

This would look great, and would work with either the script road look or the previous one (which I find superior to the script.)

One thing is for sure - their black alt with the "phantom" script is bad.  A yellow version with black script with white outline would be much better.

The black script jersey being "bad" and the script Pittsburgh being inferior to the old arched one are both pretty cold takes, IMO. If you're gonna put any arched name on the front of a Pirates uniform, it should only ever be the classic "Pirates" one. The black script alt is imperfect, but all you have to do is make the script gold with a white outline, and put a white outline on the numbers, and you're good. I agree that a gold version of it would look decent, but I disagree that it'd be "much better." The Pirates (and Pens, for that matter) need to keep the gold jerseys in 1979 where they belong. I said it looked good today, but I meant that relative to the original CC setup.

No Pittsburgh team has looked better than "decent" in a primarily gold uniform, and the Pirates' aesthetic peaked in the early 90's. Those are two hills I will always die on.

EDIT: And I agree with everyone who has said the Bucs have too many hats now. Classic black with gold P, and gold with black brim and black P (ala 1971) are all you need.

Yeah, the arched script is WAY better than the script. If you want to put the pirates home script on the grey? sure, not perfect but sure. Still better than the mismatched garbage they're using now. I like the script, but having the road and home mismatch is a big no go for me.

Pirates also only need a single hat. All black, yellow p. No more. At least the old P jersey and hat combo had the benefit of matching jersey/hat.

The mismatch isn't a problem, and the script-road isn't bad.  I just find it inferior to its predecessor.  Home/road mismatches are part of baseball tradition, though usually it's the home that's "fancy", and the road that's more basic.

It's not a "home" script - it's the team's name. Lots of teams worldwide choose not to put the city name on the road jersey. In fact, the Pirates themselves did this for decades prior to the original run of the script. So, there's precedent for them to put "Pirates" on the road uniform both within their own history, and throughout baseball. Having your city name on the road jersey is a cool detail, absolutely, but it's not like people don't know where your team is from unless it's on your jersey. This isn't 1870 when some team you never heard of would blow through your town one week then never be seen again. If I have to choose something to put on a Pirates road uniform, and the script isn't an option, it's gonna be the arched "Pirates" every single time.

Sad to see the game's elder statesman go.  Who is now the greatest remaining legend?  Nolan Ryan?

Dodgers are wearing a CC helmet. I believe they didn't wear a CC helmet during the Los Dodgers years. So they used their regular ones.

Overall the 2nd CC uniforms are fine. Much better than the previous.

Disagree, these are worse ,

"Los Angeles"  in block letters, Direct TV font..... all kind of different patches just thrown on the jersey randomly :

new team logo on one sleeve, ad patch on the other,  bright red squares on each sleeve sewn on, but only sewn on the top and bottom, so there is air underneath, why?

Looks like an afterthought....and not a part of the design, and just slapped on afterwards ...👇

spacer.png

Then you got light blue front numbers, look completely out of place.

Navy cap.... for the LA Dodgers?

No, just a birthday  cake jersey with helluva lot of random patches on.

The previous one  was much more clean looking.

Only took criticism due to the "Los" part......and that is nothing compared to the monstrosities Nike rolled out this year.

New Dodger CC uniform is a clown outfit,

This  is a baseball uniform! 👇

This uniform (minus the stupid black "spray paint" effect on the sleeves) would be fine as a standard alternate. For that reason it looks like it took about five minutes to design and thus makes for a poor City Connect uniform.

If soul-selling is on the table, why would you sell your soul for a better ad, when you could sell your soul for no ad at all?

I'm still as irrationally angry about this today as I was yesterday morning.  Why would they replace the Jolly Roger on the left sleeve with a company ad, and present it like it's something to be excited about?

Well if you're going with no ad at all then you wouldn't be selling your soul, would you? I don't think many companies out there are willing to pay the price for a sleeve patch without actually getting the patch, so unfortunately the money talks.

The money is also why these teams have to hype up the "jersey partnerships" as much as a brand new jersey. No team is going to come out and say, "we know this looks terrible, but we wanted the extra cash", even if that's the truth.

Maybe someone should just write an entire goddamn novel about the gas stations that sell sandwiches, geez.

If there is an online version of it, I want a link to Justin Tucker singing in the Royal Farms chapter.

Yeah, the City Connects should be at the very least going to the effort of being different enough, whether it ends up looking good or not. If you're going to half-ass it with the design then don't even bother participating in the program.

Speaking of basic, I had on Strike Zone the other night and got upset again about how the Royals dropped that beautiful script for a generic block on their grays a couple years ago.

Two-word scripts don't work with a tail.  Neither Kansas City nor Los Angeles look better with their city in that format.  IMO both look better now.

On the subject, did I miss it, or has this board not discussed the news that New Era's buying up 47 Brand, not six months after Old Man D'Angelo kicked the bucket?

This would be really sad news if true. I absolutely love 47. I buy tons of hats... golf hats, new era, etc... and then I always find myself reaching for my 47 clean ups.

Massachusetts sports apparel titan ‘47 will soon be acquired by New Era Cap, its New-York based competitor in the hat market for major league sports.

The seven-decade-old Westwood company is best known for running the Red Sox Team Store outside Fenway Park and manufacturing headwear for every professional sport from baseball to NASCAR, along with many colleges and universities. Over decades, ‘47 evolved from fledging enterprise of two twin brothers into a global powerhouse with annual revenues topping $400 million, while staying in the same family until now.

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, New Era announced. Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

‘47 president Dominic Farrell called the announcement a “major milestone.”

It’s “a testament to all we have achieved over the last 75+ years in growing from a single street cart outside Fenway Park to a successful business and premier sports lifestyle brand,” Farrell said in a statement.

According to the announcement by New Era, both companies “will continue to serve consumers independently,” with Farrell heading up ‘47 from its headquarters in Westwood.

New Era chief executive Christopher Koch highlighted the two companies’ shared history as family businesses.

“We are pleased to have reached this agreement to acquire ‘47, a company that shares our commitment to making iconic products and delivering premium experiences,” he said. “We have known and respected the D’Angelo family and the ‘47 team for many years and have tremendous respect for the business they have built.”

Neither companies responded to requests for comment from the Globe Tuesday morning.

Brothers Henry and Arthur D’Angelo first founded ‘47 as Twin Enterprise, roughly a decade after immigrating to Boston from Italy. They got their start hawking newspapers for two cents around Fenway Park and later opened the famed Red Sox store on Jersey Street.

Ownership of the company later transferred from the twins to Arthur’s four sons. Today the D’Angelo family owns several buildings across the street from Fenway Park and are partnering with Red Sox owner Fenway Sports Group and WS Development on a large-scale redevelopment of the area.

Even into his 90s, Arthur greeted visitors to his store while seated in a chair shaped like an oversized baseball mitt. Dubbed the “Mayor of Fenway,” he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2018. He died in March, at 97 years old.
