2024 NFL Changes

...and numbers, which I just KNEW they were going to ruin by changing to navy on the white jersey...so predictable, same as Falcons years ago (going from red to black).

Edit: Jax Jags, too (multiple times), from teal/gold/black to (primarily) black — yuck! Surely, there are some other franchises that Nike has modified for the worse in terms of removing color for dullness instead, yet I do not wish to depress myself thinking of them and/or researching at the moment.

Getting people accustomed to football jerseys without shoulder numbers just opens up space for jersey ads. I think I read Goodell was against jersey ads, but he's not going to be commissioner forever, and the NFL proves over and over it really is only about money. Remember a few years ago on the board when people here were sure MLB would be the last league to have ads because they were the most traditional and blah blah blah?

Also, all the unique fonts team use now just reminds me of a school assignment when everybody has to 'design a font from scratch, but make it mean something' project. It's cool because the Texans kinda have a bull logo, and now one of the parts of the 3 on the jersey looks like a horn from a bull, isn't that creative? And intimidating?

I think it’s now 18 years in a row where someone has said chest logos or lack of numbers means jersey ads are coming.

If NFL owners wanted jersey ads on game jerseys (not just practice jerseys), they’d vote on it, pass it 31-1 (with Raiders voting against), and add it to the CBA tomorrow.

TV numbers absolutely served a purpose at a time.  arguing against that is silly.  When editors were captioning photos in newspapers or looking for photos to put in a magazine story, sometimes those numbers were the only way to identify the player.

TV numbers were invaluable to whoever had to identify the KC player in this photo (who's oddly wearing #15 - what is this, 2024?)

Whether they're still relevant in 2024 is certainly debatable, and we've heard arguments on both sides.

As the judge, I've rendered my decision - they should be optional only, and aesthetics should be the driving factor.

He’s wearing #75 - I think it’s Jerry Mays.

New Washington LB Frankie Luvu will wear 4 (was previously 49 with Carolina). It will the first time since the rule change that any player on Washington’s defense has worn a single digit and is only the second player for Washington’s defense to wear a number below 20 (DB Emmanuel Forbes 13)

Broncos

Titans

Seahwaks

Texans

Lions

Jets

Those were the 6 teams rumored to be changing uniforms this coming season.

We know with 100% certainty that the Jets and Texans are changing. Don't believe we have any official confirmation on the other 4

Lions and (I think) Broncos were mentioned as long ago as last off season. Texans has been in the works for even longer I think. Jets seemed to come out of nowhere. I’ve heard Seattle and Tennessee, but those claims seemed dubious at best. Titans I think even denied it.

Unless an entire fifth organization has been able to keep a secret, there are only four teams getting new uniforms. That's why I don't trust this guy. I think his sources are straight up bad.

The Broncos looked to the fans for guidance on the new uniforms, and the fans preferred WHITE helmets OVER royal blue? I'm not buying it. I think the color scheme remains largely the same with a 68-96 throwback.

This white helmet nonsense is this year's Cardinals getting a maroon and orange makeover. If it ends up being true, I'll be shocked (and bummed out).

You better hope they go the 1968-1996 route because if they do not, then we are stuck with this snowcap stupidity. And why use white helmets when the orange helmets would of done better with the redo? Didn't they wear orange helmets from 1962-1966?

How come we've not heard anything from the New York Football Giants in regards to their uniforms or logos, considering 2024 will be their 100th Anniversary season?

So, how legit is this source?

I think because it involves the Broncos and is stated with such confidence with no apparent legitimacy to back it up (about "all five upcoming changing uniforms", no less!), are we sure that Jesse Schultz isn't just Nick under a pseudonym? The portrait even kind of looks like him, aged to today.

(This post is for the oldheads, I guess. But that's absolutely the first thing I thought of. Haha.)

I’d love for Tennessee to update the Oilers uniforms and introduce a navy blue jersey to the set.

(Bring back the silver helmets and pants too)

Silver/navy/silver wouldn’t be all that unique though. Would look most like the Patriots and a bit like the Cowboys

YES.

There's several I can list right off the bat, but the first one I think of, THE preeminent DL with an 80-89 jersey number, is this guy:

(His fellow HoFer linemate Carl Eller wore a number in the 80s, too...81 to be specific.)

Former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Alan Page! He is not purple and does not eat people.

Red-White-Blue isn’t all that unique either. Gotta find ways to it different than the others.

The Patriots comparison I can understand, but the Cowboys? C’mon… that’s grasping.

Minor point of correction: those Texans numbers—along with the rest of the Texans brand identity, as well as the refreshed brand identities of the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, and Seattle Seahawks circa '02—were actually the work of Mark Verlander. Those were the last independently-designed brand identities prior to the league-wide contract model, in this case by Reebok, for that 2002 season.

Ah, yes...good ol' Apex One. (That is still my second-favorite major pro  sports uniform of all-time.) And to @Ted Cunningham's point...I hadn't thought about it, but I believe that was indeed the first instance of italicized jersey numbers in the NFL. Shoot—it may have been one of the first instances of italicized jersey numbers period...the only other ones I can think of right off the top of my head prior to those were the Tampa Bay Lightning circa '95 or '96, which is when those Patriots uniforms hit the field. (I half-remember an NBA All-Star uniform using italicized numbers, too...I think it was the Phoenix one.)

Except when you can't see the giant numbers provided on the front and back of said jersey...

...Or when they're partially obscured.

Not as big an issue when watching live because one can see the players before they get tackled or tied up, but the point remains...TV numbers would have helped in each of these instances. But they're also no longer a requirement, so it is what it is...

THIS is why TV numbers are necessary. Or how often do you see an injured player with training staff over them, and we can't tell who it is for a while because their torso is being obscured?
