OMMF
Tri-City Americans play in the WHL in Washington. As do the Kootenay Ice which I'm pretty sure is a region, since they play in Cranbrook.
nwtrailtrekker
strange...there is a kootenai in idaho, and a kootenay in bc. so close, with both having near the same name. what up with that?

lucky
Also, I found it weird that the Tampa franchises are named after the body of water, rather than the city.[edit] Which CC beat me to. The Tampa franchises are named for the region that surrounds the body of water known as Tampa Bay Do people actually do refer to the REGION around the body of water as the bay? I mean, everyone says San Francisco is in the "Bay Area". That makes sense. But there's no way "Tampa Bay" can be a region. It's water. Look it up.Its like saying the Mississippi River is a region. Yeah do that. Do exactly THAT

I know it's a body of water, but it is also waht we refer to our area as. News stations down here are referred to as "Tampa Bay's 10" or "Tampa Bay's Action News". Tampa Bay is a regional term used to unify the area, albeit with many different cities. I don't mean to be defensive, but that's the way it is, ask anyone else on this board from the Tampa Bay area and I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing. In a way the Mississippi River (or any other major river for that matter) can be a region, ever heard the Weather Channel refer to something called the "Mississippi River Valley" or the "Ohio River Valley"? DG_ThenNowForever
The Patriots name is fine, but I sure wish the Warriors would change the name to the Oakland Warriors. No way. Having visited both San Francisco and Oakland, I certainly understand why the Warriors prefer to embrace the former and not the latter.Plus, to dump on Oakland a bit further, when I hear "Oakland Warriors," I can think only of violent street gangs like the movie of old. If it's not clear, I guess I'm trying to say that I really don't like Oakland. 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags

dunford
It's already been mentioned, but in the Albany, NY area, the minor league team is known as the "Tri-City ValleyCats." Which I find weird because that really isn't a nickname for the area (it's commonly referred to as the "Capital Region" or "Capital District"), and is instead supposed to mollify residents of Albany, Troy, and Schenectady (all of whom hosted minor-league baseball at one time or another).Agh. It's such a horrible name (not the ValleyCats, actually - that refers to the region). Tri-City. Good god.

jab8281965
Here are a couple...New Haven County Cutters - Can/Am Baseball League. The team actually plays its games at Yale Field in West Haven, not New Haven. The border of the two cities is right near the field.Hardware City Rock Cats - now the New Britain Rock Cats. When the New Britain Red Sox left for Trenton and the Twins came to New Britain, the new team was given the name "Hardware City" as the headquarters for Stanley Tool was in New Britain.Mohegan Wolves - afl2 - I think they're now the Manchester Wolves, and played their games at the Mohegan Sun casino's arena in CT. Now it's just part of NYC.)_______________The NFL once had the Frankford Yellowjackets, named after a street in Philadelphia. In the XFL, there was the New York/New Jersey Hitmen. The WFL had the Southern California Sun.And in the old North American Hockey League back in the '70s, there was the Broome Dusters, who played in Binghamton NY, named after Broome County. VitaminD
The NFL once had the Frankford Yellowjackets, named after a street in Philadelphia. In the XFL, there was the New York/New Jersey Hitmen. Frankford's more than a name of a street - it's actually an entire neighborhood in the extreme northeastern part of Philadelphia. However, Frankford, like many other of modern Philadelphia's neighborhoods (Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, Roxborough, Kensington, Fishtown... I know there are more) were founded as separate towns that were later absorbed by Philadelphia. IIRC, Frankford may have even been technically outside the city limits when the team was founded. And before the NJ/NY Hitmen, there were the NY/NJ Knights of the WLAF. "Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17. I don't think the other "towns" were incorporated until around World War II, or at least until they started building houses up here in the 60's and 70's.The neat thing is that with youth sports, that regional neighborhood representation continues, with clubs like the Somerton Spartans, Bustleton Bengals, Rhawnhurst Raiders, Frankford Chargers, and so on. Discrim
mero beat me to it with the West Coast Eagles...and everybody else beat me to the US regional names.so...I figure the Western Bulldogs count. the "Western" part only makes sense if you know the suburb they represent, Footscray, is west of Melbourne, and I only learned that fact after I began following footy last year. hence, it wouldn't make sense outside Melbourne, for the most part.
