"The Anaheim Ducks" *merged*

Mr. Vicious

Recommended Posts

Now ... isn't it funny that most of you people on here gave this guy that broke this story a ton of  :censored:.

Hmmm ... who's the lying idiot now?

Now, I'm not going to go out and accuse anybody of anything first of all, but considering that Mr. Vicious re-registered once...I find it interesting...

Save it for when I get the go a head to drop the logo on ya!

Wiat, have you seen it yet? If so, when can you let it go?

hmmm...dropping the mighty and being the anaheim ducks...what a perfect way to sever disney ties while respecting history (13 years is a history...im sure most of you would be mad if your team changed a name completely). what a perfect balance...what more would you want (except a good logo design, but we will see.)

A quote from the AP:
The name change was first reported in Friday's editions of the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2308588

I don't think so. I believe the site sportslogos.net reported it first. In fact right after Chris posted the article it showed up on the google news search so this site does count as a reputable news source. I think it is time to write the AP some nasty letters

Meh I'm used to it... the OC likely saw it because of my site (as Ducks fans were all over my article on that board)

But then again I got it from someone else too, whateva'

As I am sure has been mentioned in the later pages of the thread, kudos for Mr. Vicious for the inside information..for each message board "thug" who gleefully waits to attack a "low" poster at the drop of a hat, there are 5 (lurkers or not) who take, at worst, a wait and see approach.

I believe the name of the paper is the OC Register

"At the same time, the research found strong support generally for preserving the history of the team in some way."

History? The team's been around for 13 years, how much history does it have? Sure, a Western Conference Championship, but pretty much lackluster years besides that. And you're named after a Disney movie. You want some history, go rent The Mighty Ducks and see how close Anaheim is to Minnesota.

13 years of history is pretty good compared to, say, the 5 years of history Minnesota and Columbus have. Or the other newer teams such as Nashville, Atlanta, or Carolina.

Heck, they've been around longer than the Avalanche, and I'm pretty sure Colorado fans would be pretty P.Oed if they changed their name completely.

minnesota hockey was born in 1967 in the NHL ..and 100 years earlier on the ponds in Minnesota...to say it has "5 years of history" may be correct as far as the Wild go,but the RICH history of Minnesota hockey cant be denied (at least in the US).Herb Brooks just rolled over... :cursing:

Thats what I meant when I said Minnesota. From an outsider's perspective, Anaheim doesn't seem like a place of hockey, but I'm not from Anaheim, so what would I know. I'm sure Anaheim has plenty of Ducks fans, and I made that post after I read this:

http://premium.si.cnn.com/pr/subs2/siexclu...0131/index.html

so my perspective had changed for a moment. And I remember the Ducks run to the Cup Finals in 03. Best two months of hockey I've probably ever seen.

If I may, I'd like to redirect the focus of the discussion ever so slightly.

You see, recently I've been trying to get a logo design together for the Ducks, mainly out of interest.

Now the duck as a subject is interesting, given the constraints I think an artist in this situation is working with. You can't go cartoony, because immediate parallels will be drawn to the two famous cartoon ducks (Donald and Daffy) as well as the previous logo. The owners want to distance themselves from Disney, and so they're definitely going to want to avoid those comparisons like the plague (even if Daffy isn't technically Disney).

But the duck is not an animal that really lends itself to a non-cartoony logo. Traditionally aggressive or ferocious animals (wolves, bears, etc) can easily be translated into non cartoony applications because they have the natural features that can be utilized. Not so much for the Ducks.

Needless to say, it's by no means impossible. The Penguins have had two distinct, successful (at least by my estimation) logos that have been based on a more passive animal with varying levels of the cartoon-feel.

But it does make it a more difficult task... especially given the number of logos out there that play off birds and bird features already, even in the NHL (the Red Wings, the Thrashers, the Penguins... am I missing any?)

Anyone else have some thoughts on the direction a logo for this circumstance could take?

I think they will adopt a more traditional style logo and jersey to avoid any comparisons to Disney, cartoons, etc. I think they will probably use a stylized 'Anaheim', 'A', 'D', 'AD', 'Ducks' logo and avoid using a duck per se, with allusion to feathers, wings, or something to that effect. I'm thinking new style traditional. Nothing abstract, busy, or too flashy.

maybe go with a "webbed feet" logo...lots of "tiger, bear, lion, etc." teams use the paw print..wht not go with the webbed duck feet..it could be kinda cool :D ..a duck foot can look like a shield if shown from the right angle..maybe add a "shield/foot" look

examples..UoO duckfeetlogo.gif

googled this df_logo_med.gif

and this duckfoot.jpg

and this MPW8C.jpg
