I really like them!

You joined us just to say that? I hope you're not the one who designed that crud, because it is what it is, CRUD. HANDS.

The numbers makes me think of Sears.

...or the 1990s Cleveland Cavaliers.

uh huh

Or Villanova, Gonzaga, and Stanford, before the NCAA made split numbers illegal

When / why did this happen? I wondered why Villanova changed - I loved their numbers.

Damn you for wanting facts checked! I am certain it was not just a coincidence that all these Nike programs went to solid numbers on their basketball threads in 2007. Anyway, Rule 3, Section 5, Article 8 covers the number style rules, at least for basketball.

Art. 8. Each team member?s game jersey shall be numbered on the front and

back with plain Arabic numerals.

a. The following numbers are legal: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 00, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,

15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45,

50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55. Team rosters can include 0 or 00 but not both.

b. The numbers on the front and back of the game jersey shall be of the

same color and style.

c. The number shall be at least 6 inches high on the back and at least 4

inches high on the front and not less than 3/4-inch in width.

d. Numbers shall be centered on the front and back of game jerseys.

e. The style of the number shall be clearly visible and conform to the

following:

1. A solid color with no more than two solid 1/4-inch borders. When

the game jersey color is used as the solid color of the number, it

shall be bordered with no more than two 1/4-inch solid border(s)

that contrast the game jersey color.

2. The combination of the number and borders cannot exceed three

different colors. When the game jersey color is used as a border or

as the number itself, it shall be counted as one of the permitted three

colors.

3. A solid contrasting ?shadow? trim, not to exceed 1/2-inch in width,

may be used on part of the uniform number. This ?shadow? trim

may only be used in place of the 1/4-inch borders.

Wow, that's great info. I found D quite interesting. It answers why there's no off-centered "baseball" style scripts on NCAA jerseys.

I also find it interesting that they govern so much about the numbers (widths, number of borders, shadows, etc.) but have no legislation regarding the legibility of fonts used. Those early '90s 'Nova fonts were a nightmare.

And to me, this deprives basketball of one of its classic looks. I remember Washington, a few years back, wearing a script "Huskies" with an off-center number underneath. I also fail to see any sort of legibility issue with the pinline styles of Gonzaga, Nova, and Stanford.

The two rules in bold just smack of the NCAA playing design police, and being rather not good at it.

Yes, I for one, am very glad the NCAA decides to act on critical issues such as "split number designs" but fails when it comes to non-BCS schools having a shot at the national championship. Way to go, NCAA!

Sadly they are not any worse than I expected. This is what the Pro Bowl does. Ugly uniforms with too many elements crammed on too small a space. Honestly I only would have been shocked if the designs had been simple and spartan.

Boy, I'd love to be a QB in a game where a guy facing forward has the same color jersey as the guy facing backwards on the other team. Do they still do the "wear your own helmet" thin for the Pro Bowl?

I thought the same thing.

Same here...exactly why this design is a fail!
