The Road to Omaha

Ping!

As the conference tournaments wind down and the announcement of the 64 team field due tomorrow afternoon, it's time to get sucked into seeing the future MLB draft picks hit and pitch their way to Rosenblatt Stadium.

From a Georgia perspective, the state will be well represented: Georgia and Georgia Tech figure to be at-large selections, with Georgia Tech having the best chance to host a regional. Georgia spent some time at #1 in the polls, but fell into a slump towards the end of the year. Add to that, Georgia State earned the CAA's automatic bid yesterday afternoon, and earlier today, Georgia Southern clinched the Southern Conference's automatic entry to the tournament. Should Tech or UGA host a regional, the selection committee just might put the state's four teams into one regional and create the Peach State Invitational.

Thoughts? Predictions? Got a team in the fight?

The road to Omaha gets started tomorrow!

Top 3 Seeds will be 1. Arizona State 2. Louisiana State and 3. UC Irvine. I think this will be the year that Arizona State will win the College World Series, they are too powerful this year and basically rolled the Pac10 this year.

I don't follow college baseball too closely, but I've picked up a little bit this year. I'll watch the selection show tomorrow to see if Illinois gets in (I don't think they will), but they did beat LSU 2 out of 3 at the beginning of the season so there's something to be proud of for Illinois baseball.

Fresno State is laughing at you.

Speaking of Fresno State, I saw them play earlier this year in Fresno vs CSU Bakersfield, and they nearly lost. This came a night after they were beat pretty badly by Portland State. It just baffles me to think about what that team accomplished last season.

There is still hope for Fresno yet, Bucfan. They're playing New Mexico State in the WAC Championship Game at Honolulu as we speak. The winner of this game will earn the final Auto bid to the tourny.

Not even going to take anything away from the Bulldogs, they had an amazing run last year. They earned my respect. But I will say that was last year, this year ASU will win it

Good for Louisville, from the weak Big East, getting to host a regional.

Hahaha No way... I was at that game!

I was covering the community college California state basketball championships at the Selland Arena in Fresno for my college's (Saddleback College) newspaper. Me and my other sports guy had an off day that day and decided to check out the Fresno State game. Small world...

But yeah that amazed me too. Fresno isn't a terrible team by any stretch, but who knows, anyone can get hot...

Personally I've gotta put faith in my local boys at UC Irvine. I think they can take it.

Also I find it funny that they have regional sites at Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. They are literally within 5-10 minutes of each other. I give both teams their merits and they earned the site hostings, but couldnt they have spread it out? lol

Wow, UVa won the ACC? They won't make it to Omaha, but that's a huge accomplishment for the boys from Charlottesville! Unless ACC baseball now resembles ACC football...lol

I always like watching the CWS, but I'm not sure who to root for. Syracuse doesn't have a baseball team anyway, my cousin plays for NYIT but they're an independent that's nowhere near making the tournament, and none of the schools from the northeast ever make it to Omaha it seems.

I'm rooting for two teams that will probably not make it very far. Kansas State, my high school teammate Jason King is having a great year with them as a sophomore, and Ohio State as always.

If I remember right, no ACC team has won the College World Series since Wake Forest did it in the mid-50's.

So they're more like Big Ten football: "Our teams look great when playing each other, but when it comes to the big games, we disappear!"....

Time for my picks.

Austin Regional: Texas

Fort Worth Regional: Oregon State (I don't buy TCU as a team worthy of being a Regional host)

Atlanta Regional: Elon (They'll outslug everyone else in this regional)

Gainesville Regional: Florida

Tempe Regional: Arizona State (One of the best teams in the nation, as much as it pains me to say it)

Clemson Regional: Clemson

Greenville Regional: East Carolina

Chapel Hill Regional: Coastal Carolina (They hate UNC big time and would love nothing more then to win here)

Fullerton Regional: Cal State Fullerton (Easiest regional in the tourny)

Louisville Regional: Middle Tennessee State (The same thing I said about TCU can be said about Louisville, especially considering how weak the Big East was this season)

Tallahassee Regional: Florida State

Norman Regional: Oklahoma

Irvine Regional: San Diego State (Toughest regional in the tourny and I feel bad for the Anteaters because they have the defending national champions [Fresno State], the team with arguably the best player in the nation [san Diego State and their ace Stephen Strasburg] and the winners of the ACC Tourny [Virginia] in this regional.)

Oxford Regional: Western Kentucky

Houston Regional: Rice

Baton Rouge Regional: LSU
