Division 1 College Conference Realignment

The Big12 is meeting later this month. The Commissioner said the Big12 may become more proactive. They are looking at adding 6 more teams. It is coming, people. Don't think for a second it isn't. It has been coming for years. The payoff is almost here.

It might happen, but the Big XII scooping up Northern Illinois and Tulsa ain't exactly what I'd call a payoff.

Now, if they managed to swing the Florida State-Clemson deal, the avalanche will probably start.

They wont add six teams unless FSU and Clemson are involved. The four others are buddies for FSU and Clemson.

Well no :censored:. Of course they are going after Florida State and Clemson. I would expect Cincinatti, Louiville, Clemson, and Florida State. As for the other 2 teams, its intriguing to me. I would assume they would like Georgia Tech and North Carolina. But if this motivates the B16 TEN to speed up their invitations (which it will), I would expect Georgia Tech and North Carolina to go to the B16 TEN, leaving Virginia and Virginia Tech to get an invite from the Big XII. Just think if that would happen... talk about a big F-U to the SEC. Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech all being swept from under their nose.

I like it.

So the death knell of the Big East is at hand then... Thank God. That conference has needed someone to put it out its misery for a long time now.

I wouldn't be surprised if the death knell of the ACC isn't far behind. Obviously Maryland jumped ship and there have been a substantial amount of rumors surrounding Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Florida State.

Don't worry ACC, you can still survive with Wake Forest and Miami.

Miami will not be left out. Fox has a boner for them.

But who is taking them?

Big12

MAYBE as team 16. I guess it all depends who the B16 TEN poaches and if the SEC gets aggressive enough to add their last 2 teams.

Looks like the Big East is going to die. I wouldn't be surprised if the Conference USA teams that are supposed to join find a way to back out. In hindsight Miami and Virginia Tech's exit back in 2003/04 was a critical hit to the stability of the Big East. Even with some good teams over the years (Pat White era WV, Brian Brohm era Louisville, etc) the conference as a whole seemed noticeably weakened.

Maybe Florida State, Clemson, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Boise, BYU? All of those schools have been rumored to be on the Big 12's "list" for years now, so it seems reasonable.

Scratch out Boise State.

The Big XII didn't want them when they were at their most desperate of times. Why would they want them now?

Money.

If Boise can find a way to get a better deal in the Big XII then they have now in the Mountain West, then yeah. They would jump ship that quickly.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, academics is pretty much backburner stuff here.

I wonder if that new UNLV stadium is the beginning of a PAC-12 reach.

Probably not since this specific project was unveiled and received in February 2011, but at that time Majestic said that capacity would just be 40,000. There was also a 150 day negotiating window the first time. UNLV and Majestic have not gotten approval for the special tax district in the last two state legislative sessions.

The fact that in less time, the Men's Pac-12 Tournament will be held at the MGM Grand through 2015 is more of an indication, if any. If any.

Las Vegas developers give out stadium proposals and concepts more casinos give glasses of Johnnie Walker Blue to the gambling "whales". The UNLV project had no cost estimate, yet it wants the LVCVA and the casinos to contribute at least $125M. The rest of the project would be funded by:

"long-term naming rights and advertising (about $270 million), a tax-increment financing plan that needs approval in February from the Nevada Legislature, and revenue the facility would generate."

And the developers have yet to hear from the FAA since UNLV is less than a mile from McCarran's runways.

The most telling piece is "Four Super Conferences of 16-20 schools." He said Midwest and southeast. The first school that come to my mind form the West are Kansas and/or Kansas State and Missouri (who may leave the SEC for a "better fit"). Southeast, obviously Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia and Clemson/Florida State?

My guess for midwest is Kansas, ND and maybe Mizzou.

I think FSU has a shot if they move past 16. I still think B12 will be where they end up.

Mizzou's not gonna leave the SEC so soon for less money in the Big 10.

I think I agree. A lot of people bring it up but I also don't see them leaving the SEC so soon.

I agree that Mizzou won't make another move as fast as they did last time around. But they have been on record multiple times saying that they feel they are a better fit wit the B16 TEN, not just geographically, but athletically (both football and basketball competitiveness), but acedemically. In the end, it will still come down to the dollars. But the figures the B16 TEN is projecting by just adding Maryland and Rutgers is unfathomable.

If they can couple those projections with adding the North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Kansas etc. markets, Mizzou would have to look at. Before the NWO, jumping conferences was a major, major move. It tooks incredible thought and consideration. In the NWO, jumping conferences isn't nearly as taboo as it was previously.

The 20 team superconference alignment, although bulky, would be interesting to see. Mainly because the B1G can add six and then the Big XII can add 10/ACC 6 (depending on what shakes out) and the SEC can add 6 as well. The Pac 12, however, would be even harder pressed to expand unless somehow someway they can poach Texas/Oklahoma before the Big XII can poach FSU/Clemson, which changes the whole power dynamic completely.

Of course, with essentially the entire ACC/Big XII able to find a home on the big boys table which way or another, my doomsday "northeast/mid-atlantic private schools only" pointless realignment would go totally out the window (drats, it would've made for great lacrosse!) :P On the other hand, in addition to 14 schools having 24 slots to go into, that means another 10 schools (7 assuming the remainder of the current Big East get a spot in the Big XII at that point) can get a part on the table, which would be very interesting to see who gets moved from the mid-majors to the power 4.

All that being said, I still think we're looking at a gradual move towards 14 before we get to the real 16 team endgame

EDIT: However, in a really weird turn of events, the Big XII announced they're going to explore having an alliance with the ACC and two other conferences for bowls, scheduling, TV, and marketing. Wait, whaaa?
