2010 NFL Season

Right now, we have a division leader with a losing record (St. Louis Rams are 6-7).

I propose that the NFL (MLB as well) should enact a new rule... any division winner with a .500 or worse record shall forfeit its playoff berth, replaced by an additional wild-card team (provided that the wild-card team's record is .500 or better).

Discuss.

Don't like it. And this is coming from a fan whose team might miss the playoffs because of the NFC West. If you win your division, you go to the post season.

If that 3rd Wild Card team *cough*Packers*cough* wanted that playoff birth so badly, they shouldn't have screwed the pooch to start the season and against Detroit last week. Otherwise...

NFL.com is reporting that the Metrodome has been ruled out for the Bears game. It will either be played at TCF or away from Minneapolis.

No.

If (and it's a big if) a sub .500 team makes the playoffs then it'll be a statistical rarity, a one in a million occurrence. It's not like it happens every other season. Stop overreacting.

Gee..with all the NFL fans on these boards you'd think someone would have brought that up in this thread before now. If only there were some way to check...

I feel like just a few days before the dome caved in we were all talking about how it would be interesting to the the Vikings play at U of M's stadium. That has to be the best, or at least the quickest, example of a what if coming true that I've ever seen.

In that case, what if it happens to snow on Monday as well?

The potential for awesomeness is through the roof (get it?) Cant wait for Monday

NFL AWARDS

MVP: Matt Ryan, Atlanta

At least it looks like I may have gotten a couple of things right! :P

On the Falcons:

===

I do think they're overrated, particularly on defense. They had a great year last year and may continue that trend this year. "May" being the key word all things considered. Last year was a perfect storm - basically NO significant injuries, easier schedule, under the radar and so on. As I've said many times, just like the '06 Saints. Then '07 came and the Saints had to do it under the spotlight of expectations. They had injuries, a tougher schedule, and so on, and they couldn't step up.

Now it's the Falcons' turn to see if they can handle it. If they go 10-6 I'll be amazed. Any better than that is VERY unlikely. If Turner or a wideout or God forbid Matty Ice goes down or even picks up a minor but nagging injury, all bets are off.

I take it you're amazed, right? lol

As a matter of fact...I am. I expected them to lose to Green Bay and to Baltimore, but sadly, they didn't. Had high hopes for the Bucs but (channeling the E-trade toddler if he was at that game), "Apparently effectively covering kickoffs in critical situations is frowned upon in this establishment!" Agree with previous poster that the Grimes pick should have been overturned since the ball was below/behind his arm (not in control) when it hit the ground but hey, the Falcons won and that's that.

One thing I'm curious about. Given how Blount was running, was anyone else surprised/dismayed that Morris didn't show some 'nads and 1) challenge the Winslow spot and/or 2) go for it on 4th and inches instead of kicking the FG? He went the safe road but if you really want to get the momentum and mojo necessary to beat a stronger division rival, don't you have to polish up the brass ones and go for broke?

Sadly, the Bucs were pretty much my last hope. The Falcons are unlikely to lose another game (except possibly the Saints) but since Atlanta beat Arizona while the Saints peed themselves in Glendale, even if the Saints run the table - anything but certain with a trip to Baltimore coming up - the Falcons own the tiebreaker. So unless Carolina...no, I can't even type that with a straight face - or Seattle...wait, that either...crap, I think the Saints are hosed. Just slot 'em as the #5 seed and be done with it. B)

But all is not lost. As long as the Falcons don't hoist the Lombardi, I'll be happy. And one last thing for you Falcons fans...never forget your team was a missed 29-yard FG from being the ones chasing the lead dog and looking at playing on Wild Card Weekend. Come on, throw me a bone here...at least admit Atlanta should have lost in New Orleans. :P

Okay, Sizemorematters...you got me here, intentionally or not. I just reread my original post, the one you quoted from. When I wrote "I'll be amazed if they (Falcons) go 10-6..." I had actually quoted myself talking about the 2009 season...and I was right. In fact, the whole point of my original post was that trying to make predictions is pretty silly and a more entertaining thread would be to review last year's predictions and compare what actually happened. So I quoted my prediction from 2009 and it was close to spot on about the Falcons.

But I'm still amazed they're 11-2. B)

The "Tripgate" scandal continues. Sal Alosi has now been suspended indefinitely as new information has come to light in regards to building sideline walls during punt coverage.

Heard something on Sirius NFL Radio about former Dolphin Zach Thomas claiming the Jets were doing that.

Thomas was right. Turns out Alosi was the mastermind behind this practice. He instructed players and other assistants to form the wall during punt returns. Now it becomes a question of if Rex Ryan knew about this.

Forming a wall out of bounds hardly seems illegal...
