If it's not for the caffeine, why prohibit coffee and tea?

'knnhrvy16' can clarify, but both coffee and tea are considered hot beverages/drinks is part of the LDS Words of Wisdom. Coffee and tea are clearly defined in the doctrine and prohibited.

I agree with 'knnhrvy16', Davies knew the rules, especially since he is a Provo native and the school has said that the issue is not criminal. The school dismissed their leading RB and a Women's hoopster last summer for violating the code, because they were have a relationship while not being married.

The specifics of his dismissal is something we will not know, unless he speaks, therefore there is little use to still debate the school's Honor Code or the Doctrines/Covenants of the LDS Church on this thread.

The only time it could/should be brought up is in the event the Basketball Selection Committee put the team in a region which would play on Friday/Sunday.

At it involved something with the letter 'C'.

As for the tournies...

Atlantic Sun: Belmont had no issues with Kennesaw State, but ETSU barely survived against Campbell. The top two seeds move on while the other two first round games are today as Lipscomb takes on the host school in Mercer and then North Florida and Jacksonville meet in a battle of Jacksonville schools.

Ohio Valley: The upset bug ran wild in Nashville as both 5th seed Tennessee State and 6th seed Eastern Kentucky both lost their games. Today is the 2nd round with UT-Martin taking on Tennessee Tech and SE Missouri State facing Austin Peay.

Patriot: The only upset was Lafayette upending Holy Cross, but then again... It's not much of an upset when your 3rd seed only has 8 wins all season. The semifinals are on Sunday with the same Lafayette team facing American while Lehigh takes on the top seed in Bucknell.

Now, for the tournies that begin (and continue) today...

America East - 1st Round

Only one game in the America East tourny as bottom feeders Binghamton and UMBC face off to see who will be the sacrafical lamb for Vermont on Saturday.

Big South - Semifinals

Game to Watch: #7 High Point vs. #3 UNC-Asheville (High Point stunned Liberty on Tuesday while UNCA took care of business against Charleston Southern. UNCA was one of only two teams to beat mighty Coastal Carolina thanks to a last second three in their last meeting. Can the Bulldogs set up a rubber match on Saturday?)

What's at Stake: The Conference Championship game is at stake here. If Coastal Carolina wins, they host the winner of the HPU/UNCA game. Should VMI win, then the final will depend on who wins the HPU/UNCA game. Should High Point win, it'll be at VMI and if UNC-Asheville wins, it'll be at UNC-Asheville.

Missouri Valley - 1st Round

Game to Watch: #10 Bradley vs. #7 Drake (This is to throw a bone at rams80, who is a Bradley fan, and these two teams met last weeked and Bradley stomped on the Bulldogs).

What's at Stake: The winner of the opening game of Arch Madness, which has #9 Illinois State facing #8 Southern Illinois, gets top seed Missouri State while the Bradley/Drake winner draws 2nd seeded Wichita State. The other two 2nd round games are Northern Iowa vs. Creighton and Indiana State vs. Evansville.

Northeast - 1st Round

Game to Watch: #8 St. Francis [PA] vs. #1 Long Island (The Blackbirds won the regular season title, and therefore gets home field the whole way through. They also have a pretty good player in Julian Boyd as well)

What's at Stake: The Northeast Conference employs the NHL style of reseeding after the 1st Round, so the semifinal matchups won't be known until after the games. If things went normally (as in the high seeds winning), the St. Francis/LIU winner would face the winner of the CCSU/St. Francis [NY] game while the Quinnipiac/Mount St. Mary's winner would face the Robert Morris/Wagner winner.

I'm sorry, but if my school's in the Top 10, I'm not suspending ANYBODY until after our tournament run is over...if they broke the rules, we can punish 'em after we're finished, but let's not jeopardize our chances at a deep run in the Big Dance!

An anonymous BYU alum talks dirt in Deadspin.

In other news, Seton Hall gives St. John's a dose of their own medicine in the upset tonight.

I will show my age, but that alum failed to talk about (or seem to remember) Julie Stoffer from arguably a Top 5 Real World season (New Orleans #1).

Ohh, the good days of "reality TV".

The anonymous alum also fails to realize that the university had to make a statement when suspending a player and using the honor code is the safest way to not tell the public what the student actually did.

And remember, TFoA, he is a Provo native, so he really should have known how the school rolls.

A Provo native and a member of the church his whole life. So it's not like he didn't know the score. Just seems dumb to go to BYU. His girlfriend didn't and she's a D1 athlete too. Maybe he'll transfer, because after all of this, I can't see going back to BYU...but crazier things have happened. Maybe he'll just go on a mission and forget it all happened. Bleh.

I can't believe this sparked a controversy. Yeah, it's a weird rule, but he signed the code. He knew what the rules were. Got no problem with BYU suspending him.

That being said, good Gawd, no premarital sex OR coffee?

Again...

Makes that football MNC they won back in the 1980s all the more remarkable.

Sadly, people will blame him for BYU "losing" the NCAA Tournament and causing Jimmer not getting drafted higher. Each are wrong. The NBA scout have enough tape on Jimmer to know what he can do and while the loss of Davies is big, get to the 2nd weekend if you re that good and coached. Do not lose to a #7/11 seed if BYU is good enough to be a #2.

(1) Coastal Carolina over (8) Gardner-Webb, 83-72

(4) VMI over (5) Winthrop, 78-73

(3) UNC-Asheville over (6) Charleston Southern, 72-63

(7) High Point over (2) Liberty, 66-60

Winthrop bounced in the first round of the Big South tourney for only the 2nd time since at least 1998.

Thursday's matchups, at Coastal Carolina's high school gym Kimbel Arena:

(1) Coastal vs. (4) VMI

(3) UNCA vs. (7) High Point

(1) Coastal Carolina beats (4) VMI, 89-81 (stat of the game: teams combined to jack up 50 3s)

(3) UNC-Asheville runs over (7) High Point, 62-45

(1) Coastal hosts (3) UNCA in what I'm going to assume is the smallest arena to (ever?) host a D-1 conference championship (seats 999). I can only imagine the headaches it gives to ESPN.

Ha.

Anyway, today marks the first day of Conference Championships!

Big South Championship

#3 UNC-Asheville Bulldogs at #1 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Records

UNCA: 18-13 (11-7)

CCU: 28-4 (16-2)

Within all the issues that have plagued Coastal Carolina this season, none have been bigger then the ongoing NCAA investigation into the basketball programs that has their best player and the team's leader scorer, Desmond Holloway, supsended for the time being. The Chants lost two of their last three in the Big South and one of those games was at home against the Bulldogs, who won on a last second three. The Chants already took out their other demon in Gardner-Webb.... Can they take this one out as well?

Atlantic Sun Championship - Macon, GA

#6 North Florida Ospreys vs. #1 Belmont Bruins

Records

UNF: 15-18 (10-10)

BEL: 29-4 (19-1)

The NCAA tournament loves to play up the aspect of David vs. Goliath, and the A-Sun championship game ranks up there as a David vs. Goliath matchup. Playing the role of David is little known North Florida. The Ospreys are making their first ever championship game apperance in their short Division I history thanks to upsets of the #3 seed, inter city rival Jacksonville, and the #2 seed in East Tennessee State. The Goliath in this game is mighty Belmont. The Bruins lost only one game in A-Sun play, and that was to another inter city rival in Lipscomb. Many people have said that Belmont would give the conference it's best chance to win a tourny game... Let's see if they can avoid David and his sling.

Ohio Valley Championship - Nashville, TN

#4 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles vs. #2 Morehead State Eagles

Records

TTU: 20-11 (12-6)

MORE: 23-9 (13-5)

Kenneth Faried and the Morehead State Eagles are probably writing thank you notes and sending many flowers to Cookeville, where Tennessee Tech is located. Why? Because the Golden Eagles knocked off top seed Murray State in the semis to reach this point. But, they had issues with the big man and that might be enough for Morehead State to get the job done in the Music City.
