2011 MLB Season Thread

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I figure this deserves a mention - a few days ago the O's "clinched" their 14th straight losing season.

And despite this, this is not a record, because I think the Pirates might have you by a couple years.

Correct, the Pirates have had 18 consecutive losing seasons, and are only a few losses away from "clinching" their 19th.

Strasburg is the real deal. Now if only the Nats could find some relievers who don't think their job involves imitating a pitching machine set to 80 mph and aimed right down the middle of the plate.

Duck, do you like Davey Johnson? I kind of hate him. Some of his decisions make absolutely NO sense. Bringing in Doug "let me lose this for you" Slaten in after Strasburg? Stupid. Then bringing in Brad Peacock, our promising STARTING pitching prospect, for his first MLB experience as not a starter, but a reliever trying to clean up Slaten's mess against Matt Kemp of all people? Very Very Very Stupid.

I was a Riggleman fan and I understand why he left (evidently the Nats front office wanted a "big name"; someone more like Buck Showalter). I'm kind of torn on Davey. On the one hand he's letting the young guys go out there and play, which I like. On the other hand, he doesn't seem to really understand the players we have. His bullpen management has been laughable at times. We have decent middle-inning relievers like Craig Stammen and Todd Coffey, but he'll throw out Burnett or Rodriguez at the drop of a hat, and next thing you know we've given up a half-dozen runs in one inning because Rodriguez can't find the strike zone and Sean Burnett remembers he's Sean Burnett and starts pitching like Sean Burnett.

Also I realize we gave Jayson Werth a crap-ton of money, but if Laynce Nix is playing better, he should be higher in the order. It's not rocket science. Every time I see Werth hitting anywhere higher than 6th, I can't help but shake my head.

Yeah, I agree. Nix gets hot and cold though. And the thing about Nix is obviously, that he can't hit lefties, but Gomes is basically his vice versa so he should be batting higher than Werth against lefties. My guess is Werth does stay towards the top of the order just because of his paycheck, and I guess because everyone just has the feeling that he has to eventually turn it around right??

We definitely need to get a lefty specialist for the pen this offseason, cause Burnett/Slaten definitely ain't cuttin it. I guess I hope Detwiler becomes that. And yeah H-Rod is soooo shaky, but he does show glimpses of brilliance, so I'd like to see what he can do for another season.

H-Rod needs another pitch (not to mention a better nickname - but I guess he'll get that once he develops some consistency). Fastball-Slider doesn't cut it when neither one is an "out" pitch and opposing hitters already know he can hit 100 on the gun.

Kimball and Mattheus look promising but they're both hurt right now. My hope is that Detwiler becomes a solid starter behind Stras and Jordan. I'm still torn on Lannan; he's like the NL's version of Mark Buerhle. He's not going to strike anybody out, but he gets the job done when he's locating properly.

I still wonder why we traded for Jonny Gomes two days before the deadline. It's not like we were right in the thick of the wild card race. Between Bernadina, Ankiel, Nix, Gomes and Bixler, we have more reserve outfielders than we know what to do with.

I like that Marrero kid. He's got a solid future ahead of him.

And to think, we traded Joel Hanrahan and Lastings Milledge for Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett. At least Hanrahan is a decent reliever. Burnett couldn't find the strike zone if he had a GPS, and Nyjer Morgan is a nutcase.

How bout that Nyjer Morgan, eh? Is he a nutjob or what...

Nyjer makes me laugh I think he is one of the more colorful players in the game today.

You can have a crazy personality, but there's a limit to it. Morgan really needs to grow up. He's not funny or entertaining, he's been traded twice and still hasn't figured it out. When your antics become bigger than the team, then there's an issue. The fact of the matter is that this is not the first time for this guy. He's just another talented head case that will run himself out of the league because no one wants to deal with him. Milton Bradley Part Deux.

Nyjer Morgan, unlike Milton Bradley, doesn't have a pathologically immense persecution complex, nor does he accuse everyone of racism, quit on his team, or generally act like a belligerent toolbox. They're both black, though!
