Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Wonder if they still have the game on January 1st as that's a Sunday and Week 17. Granted the NFL may not even play.

From the article:

The Flyers will host the 2012 Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park, according to league sources, on Jan. 2 -- a day after when the event is usually held.

Like the matchup. That's about as south as I'd want to go for an outdoor game though. Philly's cold in the winter, but I wouldn't call it freezing. I'd say temperature is definitely going to be a concern but its more then worth it though for this game. Best idea the NHL has had in decades.

Only other cities I can think of capable hosting this game that haven't done so already are Columbus, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York and Washington. Maybe St. Louis, although I think that might be pushing it a bit for cold weather.

The temperature isn't really as big of a problem as people think. It's rain that is the biggest concern, like we learned last year.

True, but Philly gets alot of rain in the winter as well.

Still I think the concerns are definately a worthwhile risk. If I were the NHL I'd look into how you could potentially put a covering over the ice without affecting sight lines that much. I don't know how the rink will be set up, but I think with enough planning that it should be possible.

This will be the Flyers' second time in the Winter Classic, and though they've never played in a WC, this will be the second outdoor game for the Rangers.

Great reference, but you are actually right. This will be the Rangers 2nd outdoor game. They played the Kings at the MGM Grand in Vegas for a preseason game in 1991.

Great, Rangers-Flyers for the billionth time on NBC........

Don't worry too much. Lake Tahoe will get one soon enough and we'll get to see the Sharks take on the Kings in retro gear B)

Caesar's Palace. MGM Grand is a distinctly indoor venue. :P

The rest of that post is spot on.

10 more years of the NHL on NBC. Spin the wheel and see which 2 teams will play each other this week. What? We already had that game last week? Oh well, we'll do it again!

Well since Comcast recently bought NBC Universal, one would hope that more teams are given exposure on the NHL on NBC broadcasts.
