With the NHL playoffs starting in a couple days, what certain days do you look forward to in sports?

1. Obviously Wednesday(The NHL playoffs). The most intense time in all of sports

2. Sunday Week 1 of the NFL season. Its just awesome. It feels like Christmas morning for me that day every year, with almost all the teams starting up and football is finally back.

Used to be the NFL Draft, but the new format royally sucks.

As far as in terms of television and physical "days/24-48 hours", I'll give you five:

1- Sunday's round at The Masters. They essentially give us 18 hole coverage and HDTV does not get any better and the drama of the final round meets the beauty. Personally, I realize that Augusta National has it's issues, but d@mn that place in 1080i looks great to see live just to be disappointed. Plus in terms of golf, The Masters is not my favorite Major. The "patrons" are in check and it is still bad @ss.

2- New Years Day. The blimp shots from The Rose Bowl make it happen for me. That blimp shot of the golf course/stadium and Augusta National are what HD was made for. I have been to four Rose Bowls, two Orange Bowls, two Sugar Bowls, two Cottons and a Fiesta, but from a kid who grew up in Tampa, the Rose still rules.

3- NFL Divisional Playoff Weekend : Genreally, the four best games the NFL can give us over two days,

4- NCAA Regionals (aka Sweet 16) on Thursday/Friday. Typically best games of the tournament and best value to see live within a 28 hour period.

5- Saturday before Labor Day: NCAA football starts with a full day, US Open Tennis, MLB playoff chase, and even MLS or others play.

Honorable Mention: Breeders Cup Day just to gamble.

From a non American's view of American sports

1- Superbowl Sunday- Doesn't really matter who is in it, its America doimg what America does best.

2- Game 1 of the World Series- see above.

3- Final round of the US Masters- Somehow you just know that whatever happens it will be epic. And its stunningly beautiful.

4- Round 1 of the NFL season- In most sports its the one day when everyone could win, but somehow it feels more realistic in Football, than in any other sport, that anyone COULD win.

5- Daytona 500- About the only day of motorsport worth watching in the US now. (With the possible, honorable exception of the Indy 500)

Obviously as a hockey fan, the NHL's opening night, playoffs and draft are ones that I look forward to.

As far as my team is concerned, Sundays are the days I look forward to most for Ducks games as they are generally the only ones I can regularly watch. Also, any Ducks road trip in which they play games before or at 12am UK time.

Damn you, world clock.

My reaction to the topic was "wow, how will I not have the list be huge?" But the more I think about it, the more I don't really have very many. I love college football, but there is no "one day"...maybe New Years Day pre-BCS, but pushing some games into January thins that day out. Never found NFL week 1 to be that special (football, in the form of college, is already back by then). For me it's often just any time an important game happens that is exciting. Last day of MLB regular season is not on my list, but it sure is on my "2011" list.

For me:

  • Selection Sunday. I am always up for that. Always lots of intrigue, whether my school is "in", a bubble team, or "out".
  • NCAA Tournament, Round of 64
  • MLB opening day. "Baseball's back" means more to me than "(insert other sport)'s back".

There are things I really was excited about in my youth that no longer are all that huge on my anticipation meter:

  • NBA Draft. Admittedly, I liked it (and still watch if there is nothing else going on) because of it's viewer-friendliness. To me the NFL draft is unwatchable. I'll read those picks online.
  • Super Bowl. In fairness, I did not have ESPN (i.e., Cable, thanks Mom and Dad) as a kid, so I did not fully appreciate the overkill
  • All Star games. Still like 'em (particularly MLB), but not like I did.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

If I may ask, which teams were in it that one year?

I'd wager a guess and say it was the 2009 Phillies/Yankees matchup.

Everyone who isn't a Yankees fan hates the Yankees, and the Phillies were in the middle of their great run of NL dominance, which only reminded everyone to hate Philadelphia sports again.

As for my favorite days:

1st day of the playoffs, in any sport

Opening day of college football

Any playoff games involving the Yankees, Bucs, or Lightning
