2013 MLB Logo and Uniform Changes

The Angels' red jerseys aren't even good alternates. Can't read the lettering!

Everyone was always really high on the Angels redesign, but I'm really finding more and more that I don't like about it. Redundant sleeve patches, redundant road uniform, red on red alternates, silver halos instead of gold. Now granted, a lot of these flaws weren't in the original identity, but here we are nonetheless.

The home set is pretty nice, they just have to get rid of the sleeve patches (or at least create an actual secondary logo).

MLB team's aren't allowed to not have a grey jersey. They don't have to wear them but they have to have them. Only time they have to wear them is in the All-Star game.

Are you sure about that? The Padres didn't have a gray jersey from 2004-2010. I thought they changed to gray for aesthetic reasons, not MLB rules reasons (even though I liked the sand jerseys more).

The sand jerseys were their "grey" jerseys. Kind of like how some teams used to wear powder blue on the road instead of grey, the Padres wore sand.

I want that light blue version NOW!

The new material definitely looks interesting. It looks extremely similar to what is currently used, just in 59 Fifty style. This could either be a great thing, or a huge disaster.

Will it? We've seen blue vs. blue before. If the Angels actually stop wearing the gray (Please, no) I would expect to see red v red

Doesn't make blue vs blue good. And both those blues were slightly different colored. Two teams wearing the exact same color is just confusing

I was certainly not implying that blue vs. blue is good. Nor red vs. red. I don't even want to see black vs. red or green vs. yellow. I would rather at least one team wear a primary white or gray no matter what.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

IDK if slightly different shades of red or blue or even black vs. black is any more or less contrasting than grey vs. white. And it looks like there's no rule that teams can't wear the same colored jersey vs. eachother. But, it does look dumb. You'd think the teams would try to coordinate, allowing the home team to choose first.

But obviously its not like any other sport where you really need teams to wear different uniforms. I think it'd only really come into play if there was a massive bench clearing brawl, and then players might be confused as to who to fight!

There isn't a "rule", there is a "guideline": no similar alts to be worn against each other. MLB started this 2 years ago after the Braves, Padres, and White Sox wore their navy/black alts constantly against other teams in navy/black. Almost everyone adheres to it now, but there are the occasional exceptions (like that CHW/OAK game above, and I think 2-3 instances per season). MLB's definition of similar colors are: same color (obviously), black/navy, red/orange, and possibly royal/powder (I don't remember if the Jays or Royals have tried to wear their alts in TB on Sunday).

The Astros all but did away with their greys from 08-11, wearing the COOLBASE brick alts on the road unless they had to switch in ATL, ARI, SF, or TEX. They literally wore the greys less than 5 times in 2011. Maybe the Angels are doing the same thing, and the team store is just declining to sell them since they weren't selling a lot of them before.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

Anyone know when the BP caps will be available? Pitchers and catchers report in about 3 weeks. This is sort of ridiculous.

In the comments on the TB article, someone said the Rays Team Store told them they'd be on sale there on Feb 22. MLBShop.com is notorious for having no idea about what they are selling or when things are coming available, so don't bother asking them. Try the local team stores first.

Yes, I'm sorry. I guess saying all teams need a gray jersey wasn't entirly acurate. The need a road uniform without a colored jersey top. Again, the main reason is so the All-Star teams look somewhat uniform: Home team in white, Road team in gray. You don't want teams wearing colored alts in the All-Star game that would really be a rainbow mess (someone cue up the 70's all star game photo that uncluded two Athletics wearing 1 yellow and 1 green jersey)

From the Angels point of view, and this goes for a lot of teams, I don't know the exact the sales numbers but i'd have to imagine that white and red (or colored alt for other teams) are the more popular jerseys for fans to buy over gray, so why not feature the alt more often. And for all intents why bother even having the gray if it no one's going to buy it?

This is what I said in my argument for the Cardinals putting "St. Louis" on the road jerseys, but you reached the wrong conclusion. The home jerseys are far superior to the roads in every way. There is no reason for anyone other than that-guy-who-owns-every-team-uniform-item to ever buy a gray jersey. The Cards' fauxback alt was well received by the fans, and in a few years I imagine St. Louis will find its way onto the road jerseys. If the Angels put "Los Angeles" on the roads, they would sell a crapload, not just to Angels fans who would have a new and unique jersey to buy, but to people who buy it just because it says LA.

Yeah but then they would piss off their fans in Orange County.

Not to mention two Indians players wearing navy jerseys and one wearing red. (Those navy Indians jerseys are pretty nice btw.)

Fair point, but I think the grey just looks better on the field than the red, and should be seen more often. The red jerseys are nice as an ALTERNATE worn once or twice a week, but wearing them all the time would be way too much.

Truth. Gray jerseys aren't a rule. Not sure they ever were, more of a tradition due to lack of cleaning facilities on the road in the old days.

Simmer down bud, I dont see them coming out much before the first ST games. The new stuff usually doesnt come out much before then.

Brewers introducing a Gold Alternate jersey. Similar to these:

I, for one, am happy about this. The beer-colored jerseys are...uh...refreshing :D

However, this probably means we'll never see the Brewers in white or gray jerseys since they have three alts, and the navy seems to be the primary road more often than not.
