One has private, predominately Catholic schools while the other is entirely state schools. Plus the Big West is already adding CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego in the next two to three years. To piggyback on what LMU aid, there is still more money available in the WCC even with the renegotiation in Gonzaga's favor. NCAA tournament shares specifically since Gonzaga gave them a Final Four appearance last year, so there are five more years of $8M to the conference. While St. Mary's doesn't make the tournament ever year, if they do get in, they typically win and earn an additional share. The Big West isn't that successful. His rationale being that they aren't getting much out of football in the American, so why not go back? Football is the only sport that would be possibly hurt unless someone took them on as a football only school. The only league that would probably do that is Conference USA and I can't see them signing off on that. They could also go independent and schedule teams around the same level as UMass and Army. LINK It's current for the 2018-19 season but with future D-I UC San Diego already thrown on there. You can see that the WCC is kind of built in clusters. 3 SoCal teams, 4 greater Bay Area teams, 2 northwest teams, and the outlier out in Provo. The Big West has 5 schools in the Greater LA area with two more in Central CA (soon to be 3) and another soon to be in SD. I don't think the ACC really helped BC at all except for maintaining a rivalry with Notre Dame and Pitt, outside of the money they are making they always seem to be in the middle to the back of the pack. If they aren't a fit it should. UConn may be larger but the amount of money their mens and womens basketball teams would bring back to the conference would be enough to bring them back.
