No one cares whether they're there or not. Multiple municipalities have flat out told them they don't want them. They might have the least leverage in history to get taxpayer money to build a stadium and it's crazy it took them this long to realize that. It's pretty crazy they haven't moved to either Quebec City or Houston. Both have arenas already ready - so that saves them $1B-$2B right there because they're not getting tax money in Arizona. They also would already have a built in fanbase in Quebec City or be in the 3rd largest city in the US in Houston. Teams also make most of their money on franchise valuation and having a popular team in either market would have to increase the value of the franchise a ton. Houston is interesting because there's no guarantee that the NHL would succeed there as it has in Dallas. The success of the Stars have resulted in multiple hockey facilities (who also double as skating rinks for the local communities) known as StarCenters, a local high school hockey league and a minor league hockey team in the Allen Americans (who despite their proximity to Dallas) is an affiliate of the Ottawa Senators. They were never asking for taxpayer money to build their arena. It was a privately financed plan, and the Yotes were even willing to cover the cost of remediating the land. Were there some property tax breaks associated with the plan? Sure, but it's not like keeping the site as a landfill is bringing in new tax dollars.

Did you know both of those cities are in Texas? Yes? In all seriousness, if the NHL thinks that, it's a bit short sighted. Dallas has been fine in the NHL for 30 years without a second team in their own state. Besides, many (not all but many) Stars fans say that the Avalanche is their main rival. On a business related topic regarding the Stars, the scuttlebutt is that the Stars would stay at the American Airlines Center and renovate it if Texas legalizes casinos and sports betting and the Mavericks move to a new arena that is the centerpiece of a hotel and casino complex in Dallas. Whether or not they add betting kiosks at the AAC if Texas legalizes gambling remains to be seen.

Sport
Phoenix residents, is Desert Ridge actually a good location? Not as bad as West Glendale, but still looks like it's outside the heart of the metro.

Now I'm not a resident, but looking at a map, Desert Ridge is actually farther away from the metro than Tempe, Mesa or even Glendale are. Granted it's at least somewhat close to Scottsdale, where all of the Coyotes' "real" fans allegedly live (though still not as close as Tempe or Mesa are, lol), but suffice to say I'm also skeptical that, even if it gets built, that they'll actually fill the place regularly & turn a profit for once.

It’s basically in the Scottsdale, Phoenix, Paradise Valley area, if they go this route, it’ll be a mistake. At least with going with Mesa or Tempe it’s closer to the East Valley. But no one ever goes to Desert Ridge unless it’s going to the Desert Ridge Mall

It’s probably better than Glendale because you basically have to drive straight through the entire city to get there from Mesa/Tempe, but it’s further away and pretty far out there and up to the north. It doesn’t have the kinda of problems the Glendale thing has, yet anyway. Give it another decade. I went back for the first time in almost a decade and was blown away by how much bigger it had already gotten. The roads used to kinda feel overkill for how little traffic they had. Now, though? It feels like a hotter So Cal. This is basically trading one problem for a very similar, even weirder, even riskier, even further away problem. Typical Coyotes. Say what you want about the Flyers / Comcast / Spectacor, but the Wells Fargo center has had more than 500M in renovations just in the past 3 years, and hundreds of millions before that - all privately financed - and is (IMO) a fantastic-modern arena - and is 28 years old. 3 Quote "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed." I live in Dallas, and the American Airlines Center is 22 years old and got a major renovation in September. A total of $20 million in renovations overall in September, including a new roof, a new video board and replacing all of the seats in the arena. This is the largest upgrade in the history of the AAC. The AAC is doing something right with its upkeep when all it costs to replace all of the seats, add a new video board and a new roof is $20 million.
