NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

I think any Phoenix-area related option is a band-aid on a massive open wound. And not a good band-aid. One of those ones that you can't open the package without ripping the band-aid. And then it barely sticks to you. And then you have to go to the store to get a proper band-aid, but you're dripping blood all over the place and people are staring at you...

The only way staying in Phoenix makes sense is if they really believe that 1) they can tag along on a new Suns downtown arena; and 2) they'll get a young marquee player which will lead to a large increase in popularity. When they signed the most recent deal with Glendale, we knew from their three year opt out clause that they were only staying in Glendale until something better opened up. The existence of the clause (and everything we know to date) proved that they were going to lose money in Glendale no matter what. Would they be better off in a new downtown Phoenix stadium that's properly equipped for hockey? No doubt. However, I don't know that they'd be better off enough to not pursue Quebec while it's still available (anything is better than Vegas). They still might not be solvent in a new downtown house.

The only way I think they'd go in on it is if they got a very favorable lease that allowed them to pack up the trucks after a few years and move. I don't think there's any way they'd risk a 20 year lease on the fanbase suddenly sprouting up. And everyone would know their intentions, so I imagine the Suns would have to do all the leg work on the deal and tell the Coyotes "sit in the car and don't touch nothing."

Suspension/termination would be death for franchise values. It's not an option.

Nah. It'd kill the NHL in the Phoenix market, but it wouldn't impact franchise values overall by any stretch.

Yeah, I agree. Why Glendale made the deal they did stupefies me, and I can't say I blame them for killing it the first chance they had. How this plays out who knows, but the best thing for everyone involved would be for the team to head north.

Wouldn't the league want to expand into say Quebec for the humongous expansion fees?

You always have to factor in that while owners collect expansion fees, all other future league-wide revenue then gets split in one (or two potentially) more slices.

So expansion doesn't automatically become a windfall.

Contraction/suspension also takes away playing opportunities for the union. There are available markets-it would be inconvenient as hell, but Portland and Quebec could take the team on minimal notice. Shut the team down, and the union flips out.

A contraction draft would be fun.

And while I'm overjoyed with the result of the vote, this just means that, when the team moves, fans will bitch how they were "betrayed" and "screwed over" by the city, and how hockey in Phoenix totally would have worked if not for those selfish councillors.

That's a really great point. I wonder which one makes the bigger impact: the addition of franchise fees or the decline in league-wide shared revenue.

I'm still bitching about the Hamilton Tigers moving, and how they were screwed over by the NHL.... :cursing:

I hate to distract from the larger news of the Glendale-pocalypse, but an even more important, stupider story has emerged in the past few days that has been for the most part ignored with the recent developments happening in Arizona:

NBC Sports Chairman Mark Lazarus wants the NHL to outlaw Playoff Beards

“The players won’t like this, but I wish they all would stop growing beards in the postseason,” Lazarus said. “Let’s get their faces out there. Let’s talk about how young and attractive they are. What model citizens they are. (Hockey players) truly are one of a kind among professional athletes.

“I know it’s a tradition and superstition, but I think (the beards do) hurt recognition. They have a great opportunity with more endorsements. Or simply more recognition with fans saying, ‘That guy looks like the kid next store [sic],’ which many of these guys do. I think that would be a nice thing.”

Especially if a camera is permanently fixed on Shane Doan as he learns what subpar region he'll be uprooted to.

If I was GM of Winnipeg in that situation, I would draft him just for the hell of it.

I hope Scott Burnside didn't strain anything carrying all this water for Anthony LeBlanc.

Burnside was an Atlanta guy, right? No shock that his allegiances would fall here.

Commissioner Gary Bettman was asked by Canadian broadcaster Sportsnet if he was worried about the team. He said he’d be more concerned if he was a taxpayer in Glendale.

He’s right. Never mind season ticket holders or the specifics of the economics as they relate to the NHL franchise in Glendale; what company of any sort would enter into a relationship with this municipality?

This crap again. I dunno, maybe companies that don't require annual eight-figure subsidies? which I do believe still exist for now?

Yep, the circus that is the Arizona-NHL team debacle reared it's head again, this time in the form of the Glendale City Council voted 5-2 to terminate the lease to the arena the Coyotes called home. Why? Apparently because they say the Coyotes are in breech of the lease agreement; for the following reason(s):

The city council's vote was based on an Arizona statute that allows an agency to cancel a contract when an employee who was highly involved with the agreement becomes an agent or employee of the contract's other party. Craig Tindall has served as general counsel to the Coyotes since 2013 after stepping down from his role as Glendale city attorney shortly before the lease was approved.

Source: ABC15 Arizona

The NHL and the Coyotes are obviously not happy with the decision believing it to be a violation of the agreement and are preparing to take legal action.

The city of Glendale claims wants the team to stay and offered the Coyotes the chance to re-negotiate the lease - Coyotes have refused.

Multiple sources have said Coyotes are not moving out of Arizona - some say the temporary answer is a temporary shared venue with the Suns in Phoenix and then maybe build a new arena to house the Suns and Coyotes or one or the other.

Here's the link to the B/R article on Coyotes Co-Owner on the Arizona Radio Show, Doug & Wolf

My thoughts:

This is crazy, Coyotes should move the team at least out of Glendale, the city officials might say they want them to stay but they sure have a weird way of showing support. I get it, they feel slighted but this seems like they've been out looking anything to claim the team violated the lease - when that happens the city official can say whatever they want, their actions dictate their true motives.

Not sure if Burnside was an Atlana guy, but another hockey guy at ESPN (Craig Custance) was definitely an Atlanta guy. Custance was the Thrashers beat reporter for the AJC.
