Come on, Glendale...please, please just pay the money. I want them out here still. It's a decent team we have here, and it'd just be another blow to our civic pride.

I think "we close libraries and swimming pools to subsidize a failing sports team" is a blow to civic pride. Or it should be. I don't know. All those teabaggers in the desert really cherry-pick which socialism they like and which socialism they don't like.

Sad but true. But are these particular politicians teabagger darlings? I honestly don't know the political scene in Glendale, beyond the car-crash aspects.

Arizona is considered one of the most tebagging states so, I'd think at least a few members of the city council adhere to that ideology.

Not really a good assumption. That's like assuming everyone in California is a pinko commie super liberal.

It's in Maricopa County, Arpaio territory. In the 2008 election, Maricopa voted nearly 55% for McCain. In fact, since 1948, Maricopa hasn't voted for a Democrat.

Glednale's congressional representative is Republican Trent Franks. Franks was reelected with nearly 65% of the vote in 2010.

In the state congress, a Republican (Linda Gray) represents Glendale.

It's safe to say this is a conservative area of a conservative state.

True, but "conservative" does not equal "tea-party."

The Tea Party has pushed the Republican Party so far to the right I can't really see a difference anymore (but then again, I'm a liberal. I may be biased).

Regardless if they're teabaggers or just conservatives, it's hypocritical to be preaching small government (which they both do) while spending $25 million on a hockey team no one wants.

I think you're all confusing actual conservatives with GOP neocons. The GOP party-liners are perfectly fine with spending beyond their constituents' means on things like a failing hockey team with no fans, just at a slower rate than the Democrats. Why? Because sadly, there's a substantial number of uneducated voters who will vote for anyone with an "R" next to their name. And slowing down the tax-and-spend, intrusive policies allows neocons to smear their opponents as "radical" while keeping just enough of the corrupt status quo to keep getting special interest and lobbyist money. Actual conservatives would have kicked this albatross of a franchise out of Phoenix a long time ago instead of continuing to waste money during a recession.

I thought Glendale was a part of Democrat Ed Pastor's district, who is one the 2 most liberal congressman from Zona.

I don't doubt it, Lights. Unfortunately, that's not the case in Glendale.

When it comes down to closing libraries and layingoff teachers in order to subsidize this failed team, people on both sides of the aisle know what's the right choice.

Most of his district is in Phoenix (a Democrat-leaning city). A portion of his district is in Glendale. Franks has the rest.

What's truly sad is that shutting down libraries and firing teachers in favor of keeping the freaking Phoenix Coyotes in a market that doesn't want them isn't considered radical, but refusing to spend a :censored:load of resources and time on unconstitutional wars abroad and overly-invasive policies at home is. This country has some messed-up priorities.

The guy who said "I want them to go bye-bye" seems to have Tea Party leanings, but he's also the same buffoon who paraded an eight-year-old boy before the council and said they just plumb couldn't say no to his sad little eyes. So I dunno.

From reading that piece about the mayor resigning, I think some of the newer council members (the ones opposed to her) are against wasteful spending, but the older At Least She Got It Built types seem poised to keep the public-private combine going.

Is it really "public-private" though? Seems to me it's nothing but public subsidy of a private enterprise now. A money losing enterprise.

From what I've read on the HFBoards during the meeting tonight, "her honor" basically ripped the NHL.

Glendale doesn't have to pay beacause the NHL ''held them Hostage'' and told them they would never actually pay that 25 millions.

Isn't this thing set up so that Glendale puts each year's $25 million in escrow beforehand from the NHL to draw from? I don't think you can just say "we're not paying."

No, unfortunately the $20 million they put in this year is gone, untouchable. Only the NHL can access it, but good luck to them getting the remaining $5 million.

This is about to get really ugly...

I watched the video of the city council meeting. The mayor was on the verge of tears. Best part, at the end:

"Now is there any reason they'll feel sorry for little old Glendale? Maybe not. But maybe there is. Because they want to take this team someplace else, and maybe other places should know what they get involved in when they get involved with the NHL. This is how I feel based on two...how long have we been fiddling around with these people? Two and half years? Three years?"

"Four."

"Four?!"

Yes, that is how rational, logical people would handle this type of situation. Your point?

Sidenote: I just did the math. At $25M per year and 41 home dates, Glendale is either subsidizing each ticket "sold" by $49 or essentially buying each unsold ticket for $129. Ouch. That is a steep price for a small city to pay.
