I feel no sympathy for the politicians who funneled millions upon millions of public dollars to a team that their city didn't even want. It won't cost you anything, trust me." and on the other, hardcore fans yelling in their ears to "Save the Coyotes!", many of whom don't even live there!It's easy enough for us to say what they should have done, we don't live in their bubble.At least we see a valuable lesson out of all of this. I think the NHL is going to find the well has run dry this year if they try for another $25 mil. And with no subsidy, they've no reason left to keep the team in Phoenix beyond Gary's ego (and even his ego must have limits... right?) This city is kind of dumb.The library kind of needs its own in house IT techs because (assuming that budget hadn't been cut) they are going to be providing access to video media, internet workstations and computers for patron use, electronic readers, and cataloging systems for book searches. A decent chunk of the modern library involves working with technology, and that chunk is going to increase rather than decrease. And more importantly, while its not "special" technology per se, the diversity of problems you're likely to get such as: homeless guy looking at porn downloaded a crippling virus to the entire network/dumbass neo-luddite can't figure out how to use this e-book thingamajig/dumbass kid doesn't know how to use the formerly cutting edge (say, back when Clinton was in the White House) legacy technology lurking around in the collection, is. Not the same things as figuring out the water supply and pay schedules, and the library can't exactly wait to come up next on the docket for the city's IT techs; patrons don't want to wait a couple of hours. Actually I suspect the library would sooner volunteer firing somebody in acquisitions or make cuts in reference than axing the IT staff. dfwabel Posted April 4, 2012 Share Posted April 4, 2012 Yesterday's meeting was a Budget workshop and on the agenda was "HR and Compensation". The mayor were talking about benchmarking all salaries for non-union city positions. The man that she and the council was speaking to was their interim HR Manager. They are worried about all FTEs (full time jobs) and the benefits which they have attached with them since benefits. Typically add 30% to one's salary to calculate what it cost a municipality for a worker. This council, like most during budget time, is going through budgets line by line and will question the department head to justify every item they ask about. I have sat through this for five years. A lot of it is grandstanding since they are on TV, some of it is that they did not have much clue on the business of running a city, and some of it brings up actual good questions on operations. If the city won't pay to cover the team's losses, and there's no ownership group in sight to buy the team and commit them to Glendale, then what choice does the league have? To keep the team there and take the losses themselves? I can see that as being the last straw for the league's power broker owners. When the NHL and TNSE held the press conference to announce TNSE's purchase of the Thrashers the question of "why Atlanta and not Phoenix?" came up and Bettman said, basically, "the difference was that the city of Glendale was willing to cover the losses." So if that really was the reason then the NHL ought to get out if Glendale can't make with the money. That's assuming that it was the reason, and not the league/Bettman wanting to hang onto the Great Arizona Hockey Experiment as long as he/they can to salvage his/their ego(s). This whole thing has taught me to never expect the NHL won't do something extremely shortsighted and stupid, that the bar is never to low, but I have to think this is finally it. No owner and no government bailout? They CAN'T keep this team around now? Right? Right?
