One of the weirdest things I've ever seen, the Blues goal horn rips a hole in the time space continuum and the Coyotes broadcast picks up the Memphis broadcast audio of the Grizzlies-Toronto Raptors game.

So kind of a busy weekend for sports TV deals talk. Chris Johnston said on Saturday Headlines it's looking like ESPN will pick up a portion of the new NHL contract, with a little additional fire poured by Wyshynski saying something about tomorrow at 2 pm with a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse .gif, though who knows if that's just Wysh going into usual trolling mode or not. The ESPN vs. Fox secondary rights fight we thought was coming might actually be NBC vs. Fox for the primary rights after all. But we'll see. Anyway, why is that timing interesting? Well, here comes this whopper from Ourand a little bit ago

Monday Night Football needs to go back to ABC, though I don't know if ESPN bungling the negotiations helps in that regard. What I don't want to see happen is it becoming exclusive to Amazon Prime or something.

There shouldn’t be Monday night football.  It’s time for that franchise to die.

Self quote because of course Wysh tweets out he's doing a Clubhouse meetup just days after he says he wasn't touching it on Puck Soup. But yeah, be on the lookout for the NHL deal in the coming weeks because that seems to be ramping up

I’d be happy if it were just Sunday and Monday for NFL.

I've laid out my ideal plan: a month of Thursday specials through Thanksgiving as long the teams are coming off their bye weeks, Saturdays thereafter because those late-season Saturday games are fun, but year-round Thursdays are garbage and they have to go. Honestly, we don't even need the extra Thursday games, I'm just compromising in my dreams.

No - looking to build their revenues. The contracts expire now regardless of the pandemic. This was the way the negotiations were going to go regardless of the pandemic.

In what world does ESPN have leverage? I highly doubt NFL fans would be heartbroken if ESPN no longer had MNF.

I don't think the NFL would be heartbroken, either. Their relationship with Bristol has not been great ever since ESPN decided they would start applying their journalistic integrity to the NFL while acting as a hype machine for the NBA, though the NFL giving them worse and worse games does make it kind of a chicken/egg dilemma.

I think the first time I noticed ESPN was not Respecting The Shield was when Michelle Beadle was doing their morning show and said she couldn't be bothered to watch football. If anyone has done any longform writing on the degeneration of the ESPN/NFL relationship, point me to it.

They could put mics on a literal chicken and pig and it wouldn't make a difference in Super Bowl ratings.  If anything, it could help!

While I hate TNF, at least I'll be able to watch it if it's on Amazon and not the dumb af NFLN.  I don't really get the ABC thing - aren't they and ESPN under the same umbrella?  I wouldn't have thought they'd be bidding separately for various packages.

I'm the opposite. No Amazon but yes to NFLN.

TNF is perfect for your extra point gorilla idea. Mic him up and put him in.

There are some differences between ABC and ESPN: ABC is union but ESPN isn't, if I remember correctly from the 2005 realignment, and Disney only owns 80% of ESPN but 100% of ABC.

Yes, Hearst Communications owns the other 20% along with half of A&E and some newspapers and magazines.
