Seattle HC. That way no name is technically chosen and all the hipsters will love it.

Tell me you're not being serious, because people sure are taking it as serious.

They should’ve just stuck with the California Angels name. The AITO set is such a strong foundation to work with.

Eh, never been a fan of the name "California Angels". Always preferred them going with "Anaheim Angels", personally; that name has a great ring to it. "Los Angeles Angels" is kinda silly-sounding when you translate the city name ("The Angels Angels"? Seriously?) and "California Angels" is a bit too broad when we have teams in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Oakland.

It doesn't hurt that they won the World Series as the Anaheim Angels, either. If I owned the team, I'd go with Anaheim Angels and embrace the locale instead of trying to compete with the Dodgers for LA; because that's not a fight you can win in any reality. The Dodgers will always be LA's baseball team first and foremost, so the Angels instead focusing their efforts on the Orange County region and offering a more distinct alternative would be fairly smart, from a business perspective.

The Ducks certainly don't seem to suffer from their focus on Anaheim and Orange County as their market instead of the wider LA metro, so I find it weird that Arte is so determined to try and be the eternal little brother. Better to have 100% of Orange County then like 30% of LA proper.

I mean it could work. It’s kinda dumb, but so is Kraken, and quite frankly almost all of the names haven’t been great. And I mean how often do you have to refer to the team by it’s nickname? Like the Wild are usually referred to by Minnesota, rather than the Wild. You’ll hear broadcasts, coaches, players, and everyone else usually talk about Minnesota rather than the Wild.

So Seattle could just be Seattle HC, and only be referred to as Seattle. Like “Here comes, SEATTLE!!!!” Or instead of “Kraken/Sockeye/Whatever Else Goal!” It could be “Scoring for Seattle!”

Playing Devil's Advocate -- unless you are on a board like this, does anyone think this way?

Subconciously yes, I think people do. That's kind of my point. IMO it sounds a bit chidlish and tacky even to people who aren't pouring over details with a fine tooth comb like we do.

Originally, I had issues with ditching the "Las". Ideally, I would have loved Las Vegas Knights.

It's such a shame that it wasn't Las Vegas Knights. That to me would have been an absolutely perfect name.

I'm Danny fkn Heatley, I play for myself. That's what fkn all stars do.

Unless you pried the name from the London Knights, there was no way for them to just be the "Knights".

They would’ve had a hockey team named the Knights, and a soccer team named the Lights. My whole schtick is hating on Vegas, and even I think that’s cool.

It's kinda cool but also, how many years are we giving the Lights?

Golden Knights is a terrible name, but the absolute WORST part of their identity is that they decided to ditch the Las portion of their name and just call themselves the Vegas Golden Knights.

I wonder what order the process took:

-the creation of the V helmet logo to reflect the decision to go with just "Vegas"

-or the decision to go with "Vegas" to justify the V logo ?

Except for in Minnesota that is. I don’t think I’ve ever heard one person in Minnesota refer to the Wild as Minnesota.

FC makes sense in soccer, because most teams are "city name FC" or "city and team name FC". It makes very little sense in hockey, considering no North American team uses the HC label. It's not the "Boston Bruins HC", it's just the "Boston Bruins".

Now I’m curious—how many NHL teams have “hockey club” in their official name? I know the Wild do.

I had a very similar thought.

Based on everything we've seen and heard from Bill Foley it would not surprise me in the least if he made the call to use "Vegas" because he liked the helmet design so much. The man took on the US Army over a trademark...using an alternate city name in order to get a logo to work seems perfectly natural for him.

Say what you will about the Golden Knights organization, but they clearly have a vision. It may not follow convention or make for the best branding, they did not deviate or second guess.

Seattle by comparison feels very calculated. There is no single persona shaping the organization. Instead every move seems to be scrutinized to the Nth degree. Even the arena name feels like something that comes out of one too many customer focus groups.

In the end it's going to be interesting to see how Seattle's brand compares to Vegas. What approach will ultimately yield the superior branding?

That’s kinda true. I feel like I use them very interchangeably. I’ll say “the Wild” but then also say “Minnesota” in the same sentence. I guess I would imagine most fans do that too though.

Honestly all of the team names that have been suggested for the Seattle team has been B-Minuses. The best is Sockeyes, and I still don’t like it.
