Tourists aren't the ones who support minor league baseball in general, but especially in Orlando...its the local population. The Orlando Rays failed because they were at Disney. Unless the locals have a good reason to go to that area in their spare time, it's generally avoided. Also, a new team, the Florida Fire Frogs, just relocated to the Kissimmee/Osceola County market playing in the old Astros spring ballpark in 2017. The Elmore Sports group announced Wednesday it is responding to "pressure from within major-league baseball" and will move the Class AAA franchise to San Antonio, Texas, for the 2019 season. It will be replaced with the short-season rookie ball club currently playing in Helena, Mont., another affiliate of the Brewers. The Helena Brewers have been their farm club since the 1980s. There's like a 99.9% chance of that happening. If not then the Astros will be the team in San Antonio. The Double A Missions will move to Amarillo. The team is seeking $38 million in public funding - $23 million from the state and $15 million from the City of Pawtucket - as part of the project's overall $83 million pricetag. However, Governor Gina Raimondo and members of the Rhode Island General Assembly have been less than enthusiastic about publicly embracing the project. Stay tuned. Massachusetts, traditionally, has been reluctant to use tax dollars to those kind of things, and I think in most cases, appropriately so." City of Worcester spokesman John F. Hill has said that while the city is open to discussions with the team, Worcester City Manager Ed Augustus has no intention of using public money to finance stadium construction. The same question plaguing the PawSox ballpark plans in Pawtucket would be an issue in Worcester. Namely, who is going to foot-the-bill to pay to build the facility? Since the Missions rebranded 3 years ago into red, white and blue from black and gold they're good to go. Big issue now is getting a new stadium built downtown. A change in mayor probably helps since our previous mayor was only able to agree to refitting the Alamodome and AT&T Center.
