Maybe I'm making too much of it...but will they start wearing them on 2/20/20, or is that just for retail? If that's the start date, in-game...they'll wear them sparingly for six weeks?

The current Kings logo might look much better in silver than black. That's kind of what makes the 90s jersey look pretty great.

The Kings' website says they'll be available for purchase at the Team LA Store on 2/20/20.

Edit: they are only wearing them twice (2/22 vs Colorado and 3/21 vs Vancouver).

Why isn't this the primary logo?

Because it has all of the old logo's flaws with none of its endearing idiosyncrasies. The end

Interesting...Kings will wear a stadium series jersey against the Avs on Feb 15, then the heritage jersey against the Avs a week later.

And, as that article says, that'll be 5 jerseys for the Kings in 2019-20 (Home, Away, Alt Gray, Stadium, Heritage).

Quote

The LA Kings '90s Era Heritage Jersey is a permanent addition to the Kings jersey line-up that now features four different team jerseys, including the LA Kings Silver adidas adizero Authentic NHL Jersey which was revealed last November.

A fifth LA Kings adidas adizero Authentic NHL Jersey, which will not be a permanent addition to the line-up, will be unveiled by the NHL and the Kings soon as part of the 2020 NHL Stadium Series game on February 15, 2020 at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado when the Kings face the host Avalanche.

That’s fair. It’s “cleaner”, but is still a bit of a downgrade. Sterile, in a way.

Maybe the Canucks could be smart and wear their 90's jersey and then we could have a game that looks like this:

I think they will be. That picture is of Gretzky's record-breaking 802nd goal (March 23, 1994). The VAN-LAK game on March 21, 2020 is just about the 26th anniversary.

Florida Panthers Original Palm Tree Logo Returns

August 30, 2019 - 16:14 PM

The Florida Panthers appear to have made a minor, but important change to their uniforms for the upcoming 2019-20 season. Their original palm tree-stick-and-sun logo is returning. Worn on the shoulder and helmet of several different uniform designs from their […]

Love the King’s throwback. It’s so clean. Always thought they should just go back to that if they want to be silver/black.

It's easily their best look in my opinion.

I'd hardly call that Kings jersey a 90's design.  It debuted in 1988 and is as traditional as a uniform can be.

Using the palm-tree logo on the helmet is hardly proof of a full blown swing towards 90's aesthetics either.  If anything it just shows they don't know what they're doing at the moment.  If 90's stuff was the dominant trend, we would at least see teams that won a championship in 90's inspired looks going back to them full time.  The Lightning are still playing Maple Leafs dressup and the Hurricanes are now imitating the Rangers via diagonal script.  The retro trend is still very much in full effect.

If only they wore those for the majority of the 90s and only 2 years in the 80s.

When it was worn isn't really the point.  The Kings jersey contains none of the hallmarks of 90's design.  It uses traditional stripes, a bloc font, an updated take on a logo from 1975 and just two colours.

Fascinating. Didn't know that the Sabres ever took the ice in the old Aud wearing the new uniforms

They were popular and sold well. And have their own place in history. But the goat head, the black white gray and red. The various other 90's design elements...it just wasn't built to last

I have fond memories of Hasek under siege in those uniforms. Just brilliant goaltending. And was always perplexed how Brodeur/Hasek match ups (i'm a Devs fans) actually ended up more high scoring than you'd think following the Game 6 1994 epic

By this metric the Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning's inaugural identities aren't "90s" designs despite debuting in 1992 because they're both traditional designs.

So if you're just going to move the goalposts by asserting that uniforms designed in or worn primarily in the 90s (the Kings even call this throwback their "90s Era Heritage Jersey") don't really count because they're not out-there enough? Then no. I have to say you're not being genuine when you say "90s." You're merely advocating for a return of a subset of sports uniform design trends from the decade.

Besides both of those identities actually debuting in the 90's they featured several innovations not seen before.  In spite of what the Golden Knights would like people to believe they were among the first teams to use metallic embroidery on their crests.  They also showed a shift towards more complicated logos and in the Lightning's case, a unique pant-shell design.

No one's moving any goalposts when you consider what the main characteristics of the 90's aesthetic were.

- New Colours (Teal, Jade, Eggplant, etc)
- Metallic Embroidery
- More complex logos, often based on mascots.
- More emphasis on black or darker colours.
- New striping ideas (You could argue the Canucks were ahead of their time but the Panthers and Mighty Ducks were the teams that made it a trend).

I'd argue that the Sharks and Northstars kick-started the trend in 1991/92 and the Senators and Lightning followed suit a year later.  Look at how the league looked in 1990/91.  Every team had a traditional design.

If you're limiting your criteria to what "counts" as 90s design to that then you're engaging in a variation of the No True Scotsman fallacy.

You mean like the Kings' throwback you refuse to acknowledge as a 90s sweater?
