It doesn’t personally offend me. All I’m saying is just because you come from that culture and aren’t offended by the use of that term doesn’t mean everyone else feels the same (as evidenced by msu’s objection).

 

On a message board where people donate their free time to try and keep things civil for the rest of us, it’s reasonable to implore the community to respect other members, most of whom come here for intelligent discussion, not stereotype-based name-calling (and that’s all-encompassing, not just “redneck”).

 

Like I said, I’m pretty sure we’ll all survive and still be able to make our points without those terms, so why die on that hill?

If you really think the term 'Redneck' would get under the skin of Canes fans, you're going to be sorely mistaken.  It was basically a rallying cry in 2006

The Jerks thing was fun last season, but I don't want to see it carry over into this season. It was the perfect "battle cry" for last years team with all of the controversy around the Storm Surge and the team being overlooked, fighting for a playoff spot, pulling off playoff upsets, etc. 

 

I am okay with fans using it still, but if the team insists on clinging to this it will look sad, cheesy, and worn out.

I hate to be "that guy" but that doesn't represent all Hurricanes fans or all Southerners. I'm not Southern, I'm just a guy from Ohio. But I live in the South and have for about half my life. Some people embrace the term redneck, but there are some that hate it. It all depends on context and the persons background. 

 

I currently work in college athletics in Tennessee. Sometimes we host dinners for our big donors. These are well educated Southerners that are business owners, they are able to donate 5+ figures a year to support their school. Some of them have the thickest of Southern drawls. If someone from outside of the South heard them speak they might say "you must be a redneck" and I know for a fact that some of these individuals would take offense to that term. Hell, I have heard the term used by some of them to insult teams they don't like, such as "Hopefully we can beat those rednecks down in Alabama" or something along those lines. Southern does not equal redneck. The term redneck can (and I use the word can, so please don't come at me with what it means to you) have a negative stereotype of someone that is uneducated, poor, lives in a trailer, etc. 

 

I believe this is the point @andrewharrington is trying to make as well. Some words mean different things to different people, and the person using those words and the context of the conversation is important. Hopefully we can at least agree on that last sentence and move on from this silly debate.

Get used to the Bunch of Jerks moniker sticking.  Its a marketing goldmine that they'd be ridiculously foolish to ever give up.  It goes way beyond just the storm surge last year, and is the perfect thumbing our nose at the establishment for resenting the fact we exist.

 

As for your other comment... ok?  I guess I'm just secure enough with my own self to be able to take the taunts of others and use it against them without getting upset over it.

I fully expect fans will continue to use it, and I think that is great. The Hurricanes can sell t-shirts if they're still selling like crazy. I just hope we don't see the marketing/social media team plastering the slogan everywhere and forcing it. This year there may be another battle cry that comes organically if the team proves to be a playoff contender.

I am the same way. Sometimes you have to embrace the taunts and use it against them. My point was that not all people embrace the term redneck, and since there was a bit of a fuss over it in this thread I figured I'd give some examples I've come across. Didn't mean to single out your post, it was more meant as a generic response to the debate.

Honestly, they'd be stupid not to fully embrace it.  Franchises spend millions trying to come up with an identity and most times they fail, badly.  The Canes were organically giftwrapped an identity last year that should last beyond one season.  I liken it to the Broad Street Bullies moniker that the Flyers adopted back in the 70s.  They've long, long since been the team of goons who fight to win, but they still embrace the Bullies moniker and play it up when possible.  The Canes need to do the same with this.  This was organically grown by not taking itself too seriously, having fun, and not caring what it meant to the establishment.  That is the mindset that the organization should adopt from the top down, and conveniently, aligns completely with how Dundon wants the franchise to be run.  As I said, its perfect for us, and it really shouldn't go away.

"Bunch of Jerks" doesn't have the staying power of "Broad Street Bullies" for a few reasons.

 

Broad Street is hyper-local....and...

Bullies referred to their style of play...whereas the "Jerks" comment really wasn't about any particular style...it was just Don Cherry being out of touch with modern hockey players.

I also don’t think the Flyers embrace it quite as much as you think they do. T-shirts are one thing, but every project brief we get from them starts with “stay away from ‘Broad Street Bullies.’”

 

Either way, these nicknames are fine, and they’re fun, but they feel kinda forced once the moment has passed, and I don’t think they have the staying power to be a permanent part of the team’s main uniform(s).

The "Bunch of Jerks" thing worked because it was a spur-of-the-moment thing that galvanized a team and fanbase to prove something. It doesn't have the staying power, historically, of something like the Broad Street Bullies as a nickname.

 

Besides that, "Canes" has been the team's nickname for far longer then "Bunch of Jerks" has. The team's brand is the Carolina Hurricanes, not the Carolina Jerks, so it'd make literally no sense to put a name that isn't even a part of the franchise name on a primary jersey. Even the fanbase has historically been termed "Caniacs".

I wasn't trying to "die on a hill." I was pointing out how silly the entire argument was by using myself as an example. But hey, thanks for the lecture. I'm a better person for it.

It certainly would have been easy for msu to just say the Redneck Rangers made it further than most other people’s teams.

 

My personal favorite name from last season was when someone called us the “Showboating Seven Seeds”
