Always a good sign when the announcement of the team botches the name of the home venue.

Worse than that, the name "Louisiana Voodoo" for a team in Lake Charles is bad.

VERY bad.

Worse than 'Baton Rouge Zydeco'  bad, but not quite 'Utah Jazz' bad.

Simply put, there is not, nor has there ever been, any "Voodoo" in Lake Charles.  In this state, that stuff is culturally relevant  strictly around New Orleans and the plantation culture up and down the Mississippi River.  Lake Charles  is roughly 3 hours from that area; it is closer in distance to Houston-- and even more similar to that city culturally.

Seriously, it would be like calling a team in Pittsburgh the Pennsylvania 76ers, or a team in  Philly the Pennsylvania Steelers.

FAIL.

Moving to a more legitimate league, the Arizona Rattlers (IFL) have announced their move to Glendale and the Desert Diamond Arena for 2024.

Apparently it had been a struggle to get good dates from downtown (with the Suns and Mercury), and the Rattlers already set some attendance records in playoff games they had in Glendale, so they figured it was a good move to make this their full-time home and attract some more Cardinals fans their way.

It's preferable to measure distance with units of distance, so I will say that I do indeed know that Rockford is about 80 or 90 miles away from Chicago...

Still, the point remains that naming a team after the big city in the region is unobjectionable, even if the team is located in an area that is, strictly speaking, outside the big city's recognised metropolitan area.

The point is to be more attractive to advertisers, and also to have the listing look better on a TV schedule.

Branding a Rockford, Illinois-based sports franchise with Chicago as its place name is the equivalent of branding a Springfield, Massachusetts-based team with Boston as its place name. Which is to say, equally asinine.

Glomming on to the place name of a higher profile, more populous city located 70 to 80 miles away from your actual home market isn't likely to convince anyone living in the larger municipality to take a rooting interest in your team. What's more, locals in the actual host community could regard the decision to brand as a franchise from the larger city as being dismissively disrespectful. It makes absolutely no sense to risk alienating the potential fans in your own backyard by attempting to "be more attractive to advertisers" who, quite frankly, would have to be brain dead not to realize that your team isn't operating in the locale you're claiming it does.

The Chicago Rush (of Rockford) is the minor-pro sports equivalent of cosplay.

The owner says that they are planning on working with the Cardinals to make this move successful.

May they remain untouched by the Curse of the Coyotes.

At least the Angels had 40 years in Anaheim, under two different names already, and are a big 4 team. For something like minor-league, I'd imagine you'd want to be as local as you can get.

Also, Anaheim is considered a part of the Greater Los Angeles area while Rockford is it's own metro area not a part of the Chicago Metro Area.
