MLB Stadium Saga: Oakland/Tampa Bay/Southside

Branching off of @crashcarson15's point, the market situation is compounded in baseball with the fact that there's 81 home games as opposed to 41 in hockey/basketball and 8 to 9 in football.  So, really the radius of pulling fans for home games is much smaller in baseball than on a NFL Sunday and as a result the fandom model makes a lot more sense.  You can get 50K at Dodger Stadium on a Tuesday.  That's not going to happen in Nashville.

It's also the only sport that plays day games during the week, which is always going to be a tough sell. Having most of the season take place during the summer means way more competition for people's entertainment dollars. Aside from a handful of the top-tier markets/franchises, every team is going to go through stretches with lower attendance. Toronto pulls fans from all over Ontario, but they still have gotten lost in the shuffle when they haven't been competitive/relevant on the field.

If you honestly think the MLB would rather contraction than relocation, that's on you. No major sports league in 2022 is going to want to say "Hey, you know what we need? To fold teams and lower our own value as a collective because we have less teams than the competition!"

If there's any change in the MLB, it's 100% through expansion or relocation. Folding isn't an option, especially coming out of the lockout they just had; the last thing MLB needs to look right now is unstable.

Not to mention that the PA isn't going to be ok with suddenly cutting 50-60 major league jobs for their players when there are viable markets willing to welcome in a franchise.

Even more anti-contraction when you factor in the farm system for each of the eliminated teams, even if most of those players may not be in the MLBPA yet.

Are there "home run" markets out there? Not really, but there haven't been any "home run" markets available for expansion or relocation since like, the 60s or early 70s.

Great post overall (upvoted) but I have to disagree with you there; I think Denver was always a "home run" or shoo-in and have shown since 1993 that they are a great baseball market.

Washington, once they got past the stink of losing two teams in about 12 years, was also a "home run" market available.  The main reason they didn't make the cut for 1993 was a bad prospective owner set-up that didn't have the money like Huizenga in Miami or the prospective Denver owners.   Washington has also shown (since the Expos were relocated there) that they ARE a great baseball market that fits the archetype mold:  a large population, upper East Coast metro area.

yeah, I don't think contraction is happening in baseball. the only (non-MLS) situation in North America where I can see that happening is the Coyotes finally collapsing and an expansion team in (Quebec/Portland/Hamilton/>houston) taking their place.

as for Oakland, this might be a weird take, but I just don't think it can justify being a major-league market anymore. the NYC and LA metro areas (ranked 1 and 2) can handle two teams in a sport, three if you count the Devils (which I don't). Chicago (ranked 3rd) only does it in one sport. the Bay Area fell to 13th place in 2021, behind - of all things - the Inland Empire. population's less than half of Chicagoland's. I don't really think it's going to work out much longer.

y'know, speaking of, I wonder if the IE could sustain a major-league franchise...

Too bad we can't copy/paste off that document because there are some gems in there.

The best looking team in baseball shouldn't be this embarrassing.

The A's may have the best colours in baseball (though the kelly green would be even better).  But they are far, far from the best-looking team.

For them to have used that goofy generic Kansas City-era wordmark for 35 years is ridiculous.  Instead, the team should be wearing a uniform that is in keeping with its history.

The team's signature is the A on its uniform.

So this is what the team should be wearing now.

To have ever gone away from this uniform is a travesty.

Alternate that jersey with these jerseys...

Oakland Athletics’ starting pitcher Sonny Gray (54) delivers in the second inning of their baseball game against the Detroit Tigers held at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. (Doug Duran/Bay Area News Group)     822792668-oakland-athletics-v-toronto-blue-jays.jpg.jpg

...and the A's could claim to be the best-looking team in baseball.

The A’s aren’t even averaging 10,000 a game right now, so why the hell not? :censored: em, as far as I’m concerned. Good riddance. It’s crazy to think it’s gotten to that point, but I don’t really even think the greater Bay Area/Northern California would even miss them at this point.
