As a fan of KC sports teams, I've been really impressed with the Royals' downtown stadiums plans.  I think it would be a good thing for the team and would help them be more successful as a small-market team.  Like it or not the suburban stadium they play in is just not very compatible with modern economics.

Is this like how the Bears' extremely downtown stadium isn't compatible with modern economics and need a suburban stadium to be successful?

You wouldn't be able to avoid the airport.

I’ve never been to the Atlanta airport, but that’s mostly because the furthest south I’ve been is St. Louis and I never fly Delta.

Pn the CCSLC airport rankings, how does Atlanta fare compared to Denver, O’Hare, and Sky Harbor (to name a few I’ve been to on layovers)?

Of the airports you mentioned, the only one I've been to is St. Louis and it was fine. No issues. I've been through Atlanta more times than I can remember and I've never had a problem. Hartfield-Jackson is big and it's busy, but it's very easy to navigate. If you have at least an hour between flights and you shouldn't have a problem. If you have more than an hour there is enough stuff to keep you from getting too bored.

I've connected in Atlanta a few times, never departed. It feels like a sprawlier O'Hare such that you pretty much need to take the people mover anywhere. I had to jog a bit to make a plane home once. O'Hare, for being one of the busiest airports in the world, always seems to get me through check-in and security very quickly. Sometimes you hit a vein of absolute solitude and you're through in almost an instant.

Isn't ATL the busiest airport in the US due to how it's a hub for multiple airlines?  I'm not sure how it's possible to not have connected there at least once, unless you're just not a frequent traveler (and even then, unless you live near another major hub where there's direct flights to everywhere, it's tough.)

It's been 18 years since I was last there (and I'm a pretty-frequent traveler, albeit internationally) and it was among the worst experiences I've ever had, just due to the sheer size of it and overall disorganization.  Connecting from point a to b took seemingly an hour (it was probably less, but it felt like an hour) over the tram (which was not where the signs pointed to) and then multiple walkways, and staff that was clearly overworked, likely underpaid, and not helpful.

Of course, everyone has different experiences and different opinions about everything.  I happen to really like EWR, not just because there's more direct flights than many other airports, but it's among the most convenient airports to get to via multiple train lines and reasonable shuttles (and has cheap parking if you buy ahead), and even through some extreme renovations, I've never had an issue knowing where I need to go and avoiding large queues.  That's probably a minority opinion.  I think PHL has improved 100% in the past 10 years and I really like flying from there too, but if there's a choice between a direct from EWR or a connecting flight from PHL (which may even be EWR), I'll pay the same - maybe even slightly more - and take the train up to EWR.

But to the point about "knowing about Atlanta if not for sports", I think there's enough famous businesses based there, and celebs that have come from there, to make it known to the average person (even if not front-of-mind like it is to sports fans.)

According to Google, ATL is the busiest airport in the world.

Side note: Minneapolis Airport has a Prince store.

Not to get too off topic here, but ATL doesn't "feel" like a big airport, let alone the world's busiest. It just feels like a bunch of small/midsized airports mashed together and connected by PlaneTrain.

It has nowhere near the gravitas of a place like Hong Kong, Dubai, Heathrow, etc.

I look forward to seeing if the River Cats can outdraw the A's over those 3-4 years. I suspect year 1, with the novelty of (what is technically) an MLB team, will draw some crowds at first.

According to Front Office Sports:

Quote

The MLBPA didn’t immediately release a comment on the future setup after the A’s announcement. A union spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

For a union as powerful as the MLBPA, they have been very silent on the whole A's relocation.

Other than for one week every summer, when the busiest airport in the world is located in Oshkosh, WI.

This is true, but also why ATL is the worst of all worlds. I've flown out of there and the TSA setup, at least at the time, was among the very worst I've dealt with, and the longest lines outside of the Boston JetBlue terminal in an early holiday-adjacent morning.

The turning off of replies is very funny to me. I thought the PR playbook would suggest keeping them open to let the people have an outlet. Not like anyone who watches baseball is unaware of all that's going on with this situation.

The ESPN headline on this said the A's are playing here "before Vegas residency", which I thought was unusually clever for their newswriting desk, and also a good way of not just making a Vegas joke but also making it clear how much nothing they've planned will really feel like a home.

Gross. We don’t want them.

All this is going to do is :censored: up the long term viability of the RiverCats. I can’t see them sticking around during this stretch to try and directly compete with a MLB team who shares their field. I’m not even sure the league would allow that, as the RiverCats not only can but absolutely would outdraw the A’s the vast majority of those three years.

They’re using this as a “trial run for a MLB team in Sac” and I’m sorry but lol what? They couldn’t even get the soccer team off of the ground and now that’s completely out of reach because of the $500 million expansion fee. And now they want to try and pivot to MLB expansion? 🤣🤣🤣 sure, Sacramento.

This whole thing is a terribly half baked idea put out by the two dumbest sports ownership groups (Kings and A’s) in the state of California.

I hate everything about the way this A's situation is going, starting with the fact that they're going anywhere. Moving north (i.e., away from Vegas) into a 14,000-seat stadium to play in a city of people that will probably be Giants fans after this shakes out is bad enough. But for three years?  Will anyone even remember this franchise when they get to Vegas?

If I lived in Sacramento, I'd definitely go to some games. The A's may be the A's but they'll have opponents worth watching. But it would not endear me to the team. It would just be a temporary thing to do for three summers. All of this is a bad look, including the fact that they can't play in a temporary setting in their new city because their new city is too hot to play outdoor baseball in.

I regularly fly between DEN and SFO. DEN feels like the largest airport I’ve been to in the US, mostly because I have to cross over three terminals on the shuttles to get to Southwest. My O’Hare experiences have all been rather quick and generally pleasant. There was no big crossing over into a distant terminal.
