According to Google, ATL is the busiest airport in the world.

Other than for one week every summer, when the busiest airport in the world is located in Oshkosh, WI.

Not to get too off topic here, but ATL doesn't "feel" like a big airport, let alone the world's busiest. It just feels like a bunch of small/midsized airports mashed together and connected by PlaneTrain.

It has nowhere near the gravitas of a place like Hong Kong, Dubai, Heathrow, etc.

This is true, but also why ATL is the worst of all worlds. I've flown out of there and the TSA setup, at least at the time, was among the very worst I've dealt with, and the longest lines outside of the Boston JetBlue terminal in an early holiday-adjacent morning.

The turning off of replies is very funny to me. I thought the PR playbook would suggest keeping them open to let the people have an outlet. Not like anyone who watches baseball is unaware of all that's going on with this situation.

The ESPN headline on this said the A's are playing here "before Vegas residency", which I thought was unusually clever for their newswriting desk, and also a good way of not just making a Vegas joke but also making it clear how much nothing they've planned will really feel like a home.

Gross. We don’t want them.

All this is going to do is :censored: up the long term viability of the RiverCats. I can’t see them sticking around during this stretch to try and directly compete with a MLB team who shares their field. I’m not even sure the league would allow that, as the RiverCats not only can but absolutely would outdraw the A’s the vast majority of those three years.

They’re using this as a “trial run for a MLB team in Sac” and I’m sorry but lol what? They couldn’t even get the soccer team off of the ground and now that’s completely out of reach because of the $500 million expansion fee. And now they want to try and pivot to MLB expansion? 🤣🤣🤣 sure, Sacramento.

This whole thing is a terribly half baked idea put out by the two dumbest sports ownership groups (Kings and A’s) in the state of California.

I hate everything about the way this A's situation is going, starting with the fact that they're going anywhere. Moving north (i.e., away from Vegas) into a 14,000-seat stadium to play in a city of people that will probably be Giants fans after this shakes out is bad enough. But for three years?  Will anyone even remember this franchise when they get to Vegas?

If I lived in Sacramento, I'd definitely go to some games. The A's may be the A's but they'll have opponents worth watching. But it would not endear me to the team. It would just be a temporary thing to do for three summers. All of this is a bad look, including the fact that they can't play in a temporary setting in their new city because their new city is too hot to play outdoor baseball in.

I regularly fly between DEN and SFO. DEN feels like the largest airport I’ve been to in the US, mostly because I have to cross over three terminals on the shuttles to get to Southwest. My O’Hare experiences have all been rather quick and generally pleasant. There was no big crossing over into a distant terminal.

According to Front Office Sports:

For a union as powerful as the MLBPA, they have been very silent on the whole A's relocation.

I know when the Jays played i Buffalo during the pandemic, the Bisons were temporarily relocated to Trenton, NJ.  Not sure if that was a pandemic protocol issue or a logistical issue at the venue, but we'll see soon enough.

Probably logistical issues.  I heard somewhere that renovations to Bisons stadium had to be made before the MLBPA officially signed off on the Jays playing there.  There might be a reason that they have been silent on the whole A's situation as they apparently have their own issues to deal with.  However, they have recently lashed out against the Fanatics jerseys and worked with MLB to place Wander Franco on administrative leave, despite the internal strife in the MLBPA.

The fact that there's been complete silence on this whole relocation by the MLBPA is interesting.

Cool, so now both California AL teams, both of which beginning with A, are going to be downplaying their location.

So, with the A's moving to Sacramento for two years... what does that do to the River Cats?

We were talking about that earlier in the thread.  Options to consider could be:

- Remain in Sacramento and share with the A's.

- Share a current MiLB stadium (Fresno?, Stockton?)

- Relocate temporariliy to an unused former MiLB stadium (Lancaster?)

- Far chance, but as Sacramento is a Giants affiliate, could Oracle Park in San Francisco be an option???

I'm sure more will come out in the coming months, but one of the above is the likely outcome.

From Evan Drellich and Ken Rosenthal's article in The Athletic:

Quote

The A’s announced Thursday that they are moving to a minor-league stadium in Sacramento for 2025-27, with an option to stay for an additional year. Sutter Health Park, the home of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, will become a major league stadium for at least three seasons. The A’s will be sharing the park, which has a capacity of 14,000, with the River Cats who will continue to play in the stadium when the A’s are away.

Won't Triple-A have to re-do their schedules to make this work? I thought they had all shifted to the Tue-Sun schedule with Monday off as a travel day.

Good move on the A's part.  Becoming a lame duck Oakland team for four years just for TV money was a bad way to go.

They are now far from the cavernous coliseum and the boycotting fans.

(what I am about to say should not be taken as some sort of defense of fisher, et al)

Oakland government's propaganda about this whole situation has been funny to me and crazy how many people are swallowing what they're putting out.  They have been remarkably unserious about the whole thing.  An example of this is the deal they just offered to the A's, which included a stipulation that they would be given an expansion team... a thing that the Athletics or John Fisher have no power to give them.  Why was it in their deal then?  Because Oakland's current government needs to play 100% victim and look good to their constituents.

Anyway, now that this is really real, I'm pretty sad.

They haven't made the 2025 MLB schedule yet.  I'm guessing they can work around that?  They can schedule A's games when the RiverCats aren't in town
