See Red
Bring back the BCS, but replace some of the more ridiculous computer polls (looking at you, Colley Matrix) and take the top four teams. Or have the bowls as they used to be and do a plus-one. The current system has been a net-negative for college football. There should be no committee -- no group of people with zero transparency that arbitrarily decide what matters on a team-by-team basis.

For someone who's a Notre Dame fan, you seemingly are going out of your way to not get them in the playoffs. Unless they lose to Clemson AND look absolutely pathetic while doing so, they have a good chance to still be in the playoffs because I don't think the committee wants to bring A&M in and they can't drop them because everyone else behind them, other than Cincinnati have losses. Have you watched Notre Dame this year? Their schedule just doesn't pass the eye test compared to an Alabama or a Clemson or even a Cincinnati. They're not at the same level. They beat Clemson despite turning the ball over inside the 10 yard line and forced two turnovers by Travis Etienne. And looking at Notre Dame and Clemson's schedule? They look pretty close. The bowls are a large part of what always made college football great. I mean... sure, nobody needs the Lendingtree Bowl, but the sport has only suffered the more and more they've tried to NFL-ize it and emphasize the national champion. It's all they talk about anymore -- the playoff. Every game you watch, they drone on about Clemson, Ohio State, and Alabama and then every commercial break you get some commercial with some :censored:ty song reminding you your game doesn't matter because of the COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF EXCLUSIVELY ON ESPN. Schools on runs like Coastal Carolina can't actually enjoy their seasons because they're too busy feeling slighted that they're not considered for the playoff when the reality is that Alabama or Clemson would beat them by 30+. And frankly, all it's done is put more separation between the top teams and the rest of college football.
Red Wolf
I would say it's an issue of the playoff not going far enough. If we stick with this silly bowl system, then we need to go all the way and make it as dumb as possible. No BCS and no playoff like in the ancient times. If we're going to do a playoff then it needs to be a proper one and not a semifinal + final. 14 minutes ago, See Red said: Schools on runs like Coastal Carolina can't actually enjoy their seasons because they're too busy feeling slighted that they're not considered for the playoff when the reality is that Alabama or Clemson would beat them by 30+. We didn't get very far into the playoff era before we had somebody else claiming a national title with UCF, so clearly they didn't do a good enough job with the system. Coastal might lose by a million to Alabama or Clemson, but Oklahoma does that every year, so would it really be that different?

shstpt1
It’s not a true play off. It’s the ESPN recruiting class invitational. The biggest line they use that irks me to no ends is when the mention the “4 best teams” but never the 4 best seasons. I truly get annoyed that a Baylor/TCU from a few years ago scenario has to have a perfect season and Bama/OSU/Clemson/Oklahoma to lose multiple games, but if the Baylor/TCU type seasons lose one game, they fall out of contention. An 8 or 16 team playoff with automatic bids for conference championships make the most sense to crown a true National Champion. As it is now, no one from the G5 schools can ever dream of a national championship, and if they claim one, like so many schools of the past do, they get made fun of and “it doesn’t really count”

If G5 and P5 break up, the seasons will look more like this one than they will a normal season. Why would Kent State waste a beating at Alabama when they could possibly go 8-2 in the MAC and make the playoffs? The SEC will rotate out coaches 4-5 a year if it's just them playing games against each other and a top ACC, Big Ten or PAC-12 team. 10 minutes ago, Red Wolf said: If we stick with this silly bowl system, then we need to go all the way and make it as dumb as possible. That's why Boston College called things off. If there's no benefit and it's all risk, why do it?

Wait... But you're comparing the selection process of a 68-team tournament to the selection process of a four team tournament. Being the first team left out of the NCAA Basketball Tournament will never be as strong of a gripe as being #5 in the college football playoff considering the number of games played in a season, the ability to schedule games in a short timeframe, and willingness of good programs to play good opponents in college basketball. There's just no reasonable way to have a committee of people deciding whether Alabama is better than Ohio State in football in any given year based on vague qualifiers like "four best teams." It's completely subjective, they're not held to their own precedent, and they just spit out bull :censored: reasoning to justify it like "eye test" or try to quantify an injured players impact -- like how the Clemson loss to ND shouldn't count against them because Lawrence was hurt but we're going to ignore Notre Dame's injuries. But really, there's at most one or two G5 teams with any kind of claim to making the playoff in a given year, and it's usually not even a strong claim. MAC Champion Miami-Ohio lost by 70 to Ohio State last year -- why should they have gotten an automatic seat at the table when they were probably worse than any Big Ten team? Isn't that true of the P5 though? Again, we watch Oklahoma or Michigan State get stepped on every year. Why not watch Buffalo get the same treatment? The same thing happens in the basketball tournament. Usually.
