MLB 2022 Uniform/Logo Changes

I like playing with the format so that not every team is in gray on the road, but that only applies to light color pants. I'll allow a powder blue, dark cream, the Padres sand, maybe even a muted yellow if someone wanted to try that, and some variations on gray. What I don't think I'll ever get used to is dark color pants.

That just will always look weird and silly to me.

Uniforms without white or grey pants are absolutely a case-by-case thing for me. I like those White Sox and Rockies uniforms, but I don't like the Dodgers. I also wouldn't like all-black or all-green for other black or green teams necessarily. I think it's all about how the uniform is executed and the context of the team.

I honestly think Philly's identity right now with the mix of uniforms is just about perfect. You can get away with three different home uniforms without issue when you play 81 games there. The set rotation combined with a clear hierarchy also makes that work better. It's clear the pinstripes are No. 1 and the other two uniforms are alternates.

My general rule of thumb is that baseball pants should be a colour that functions as white or grey. The sand functions as grey in my eyes, even though it isnt.

I also like the NPB practice of white pants and a dark top on the road, even if i wouldnt like to see it in MLB.

My problem with the Phillies powder blues is that it wasn't a home uniform, but they wear that throwback exclusively at home. The actual home uniform from those days was a nice look itself and I would've been less cranky about wearing it in the world series last night because it spiritually does the same thing as their regular pinstriped home uniform.

I get why they wear the powder blues at home (because it's more visibly throwback and more divergent from their current home/road look than the home pinstripes were), but I don't like this revisionism that the throwback gear in tees, hoodies, hats, etc tends to push in that the Phillies colors back then were a burgundy and powder blue team. The colors were burgundy and white and they wore powder blue on the road. It's a bit like saying gray is an official team color of the Phillies now.

The Phillies wearing the powder blues at home gets a pass from me because its a throwback. I have less patience for the Blue Jays and Rangers who wear alternates at home. Both of those uniforms are pretty sweet looking, so my frustration stems from a desire to see them wear them full time on the road.

The powder blue of the throwbacks seems heavier and richer than the powder blue of the actual uniforms from the 70's and 80's. Maybe that's just old photographs, but I think it was more muted back then.

am I wrong?

There were inconsistencies for sure, and due to the nature of TV technology of the time and grainy news prints, it wasn’t always clear. But I’ve seen game-worn ones from that era, and those are very similar to the darker shade of the throwback. But they used different manufacturers and there were definitely variations in shade. The one and only time I ever saw a powder blue jersey on a fan when I was a little kid (you simply could not buy them), I was surprised how dark the blue was vs what I saw on tv.

especially since the home uniform from the early 80s era had red pinstripes just like todays (though woven vs printed).

When the Twins brought out their new uniforms in 1987, it was so refreshing. They got rid not only of powder blue, but also of that sloppy wordmark and the incongruous TC cap logo. (In addition, the uniforms originally had no player names at home.) I felt like a page had been turned. "What a relief!", I thought. " We'll never see that mess again." Alas, every single one of those bad design elements has crept back in, and now the Twins look almost as bad as they did in 1986. It's a tragedy.

The Twins Metrodome set is a fantastic look, and one that I’m hoping they go back to here next year. But they made the right choice in bringing back the TC logo. It’s a fantastic logo and fits well for the Twin Cities. And it’s way better than the overly 80’s M cap logo… I will die on the hill defending the TC as a great cap logo for the Twins 😜

However I do agree that seeing great looking uniforms adds to the overall experience of sports!

God I love that uniform. This team belongs in all black with pinstripes. They had a win streak this past season wearing it at home and I was hoping they'd just wear it for every game, home and away.

These feel like an actual pinstriped suit and so they look fantastic!

Was that intentional or the result of their ability or lack thereof to consistently reproduce a color? Seems like the Phillies had a hard time in that era finding a consistent shade of burgundy across all their gear.

But also willing to accept that photos can distort how colors actually looked.

My least favorite of their combinations of that uniform. I prefer the yellow pants with either jersey.

Yes.

When I was around 6, I had a mesh-back Phillies cap that was red.  On TV, it sometimes looked like they had separate home and road caps, but I don't think that was the case.  But there was definitely inconsistencies.

I've posted this before, but I cannot stress enough how great this site is as a database of game-worn uniforms and the history of manufacturer changes and other quirks.  This goes through all the color changes over time:

The actual shirt for the Rockies uniforms and mimicking the license plate is a cool idea. It's just I cannot get past dark colored pants.

They look good with white pants.

I am actively trying to get used to dark color baseball pants because it feels like they're not going anywhere and I just cannot get used to them.

Not sure if any one player has ever had a better uniform career than that dude.

The powder blue is whatever, I could take it or leave it. But the logo and maroon color they used is so far superior to the current look. The maroon is unique to the league (D Backs are close, but Phillies use a darker shade. At least, I think they do). And the logo with the squiggle is MUCH better. I really wish they would at least bring those aspects back.
