And actually, now that we're talking about this (*Bucjack immiment*)...recently I'd been going back and watching highlights of the old Buccaneers I grew up cheering for, and...yeah I think I'm about at that point. That away look (and sometimes home, since even back then they were keen to wearing white at home) might've been a tad more tolerable had they kept it to white-on-white...but those orange pants...man, they stick out like a sore thumb now when I watch them. I mean, just look at this:

 

 

 

 

That's about as loud as loud gets. Now contrast with the white-over-whites:

 

 

I still adore the orange jersey/white pants combo--and I'm never not going to--but those orange pants (which showed up in '92 IIRC) were just not it. 

The 1992-1996 orange leotard look. Red socks or white with red/orange/red stripe would of helped that time.

I could be wrong, but I feel like the 2010's throwback creamcicles were softer looking.

I think it's because the mesh fabric was low sheen compared to the dazzle fabric of the 90's.



While it's obvious that we would see an even softer version of the orange jersey with the current Nike fabric, however, if the Bucs were rolling with the white over orange uniform, we'll see a much different look given the big shift in pants fabric.

I have a Mike Alstott throwback that they sold around 2010 and the shade of orange is definitely softer/pastel like the orange was in the Bucs early days.  The local beat writer confirmed the orange did change in the late 80s/early 90s.

It was an actual color change that made the difference, and the Bucs made a point to use the more unique shade of orange they originally used for those throwbacks.

Correct. And apparently, that shade of orange changed in rather short order...it may have even changed ahead of the 1977 season (and again sometime in the '80s, I think). Whatever the case, the original creamsicle orange was definitely closer to what one would call "peach". I wanna say it was around '92 or '93 they shifted to PMS151 aka "Tennessee Volunteer Orange", which was a touch bit richer in hue. 

 

I still don't know what they heck Culverhouse n'em were thinking pairing red with all that bright orange, but regardless, we've now got these cult classic uniforms that are definitely an acquired taste, and that those of us who grew up rooting for the laundry (and that daggone winking-behind pirate) have a definite love/hate relationship with.

The lighter orange is easier on the eyes. By the time they started wearing orange pants in 1992 it was almost too intense of an orange. I honestly wonder if the intensity of the orange was the real reason they wore white at home so much. Sure temperature plays a part but you gotta imagine a lot of players and fans around probably felt a "certain terrible way" about those colors and that logo, which I won't go into but I am sure you know what I'm getting at.

 

Personally I always thought the look was good but the pirate rebranding was way better.

It never looks good when a White or Silver helmet is paired with very dark pants.  It’s always unbalanced.

I enjoy hearing folks perspective on their uniform “rules of thumb” because I don’t necessarily have any myself, and immediately start looking for outliers. But you’re right.

 

I’m ok with the Patriots in silver helmets and navy pants (as long as the socks are white with striping - dynasty era), and I can get behind the Saints in gold helmets and black pants (with white socks and striping). But the Panthers always look best with silver pants to match their silver helmets, regardless of uniform color. They could ditch the silver altogether (full rebrand) as others have suggested, but then they wouldn’t look like the Panthers. Fix the helmet striping, clean up the uniform striping, ditch the shoulder numbers (or put them on the sleeve). Black or blue socks, and no leotards.

Holy geez, dude...you might be onto something. I've known about that prototype design for years; never dawned on me that they would ever *potentially* think to actually recreate that in real life. And if they actually do, then I, my Buc-kin @FiddySicks, @hormone and a whole lotta other people throughout central and south Florida and L.A. (thats Lower Alabama, known to the rest of y'all as the Florida Panhandle) are gonna be out some for sure.

I doubt they're going to throw back to an unused prototype, but I do like that idea and wish teams would actually do that sometimes.

Oh crap, this might be a real possibility.  I have never seen those prototypes before, but it definitely checks out with Lavonte David's comments.

I thought that might be an indication that it will be a white throwback, but then I realized this is the cover photo on the team Twitter page:

I also don't think they would do white when everyone has been referring to them as the "Creamsicles".

Then again, this team is obsessed with white. Could they maybe be pull a Dolphins and do a white version and a color version of the throwbacks (and ditch the pointless pewter alternate to make room for it)?

Beyond whether the prototype design is good or not, would it abide by NFL rules? I thought the whole idea with throwbacks was that they had to be designs previously worn by the team. The only situation I could see it working is if they used it as color rush, which seems to blur the lines a bit and have looser regulations.

Unpopular opinion: I like the pewter alts
