Arizona Cardinals Unveil Black Alt Jerseys

They're not bad, but did the Cardinals REALLY need a black alternate? The Lion didn't need one, neither do the Cards.

Ever notice that the teams who add a black alternate jersey haven't won anything in years? Take a look:

Arizona (last title 1947)

Detroit (last title 1957)

Philadelphia (last title 1960)

Atlanta (no titles)

Jacksonville (no titles)

In fact, MOST of the teams who have added alternate jerseys did so YEARS after their last title or have NEVER won a title:

Denver (exception)

New England (exception)

NY Giants (exception)

Miami (last title 1973)

Cincinnati (no titles)

Cleveland (last title 1964)

Houston (no titles)

Tennessee (no NFL titles)

San Diego (no NFL itles)

Chicago (last title 1985)

Carolina (no titles)

Seattle (no titles)

Ummm. The Falcons started wearing a black jersey WAY back in the 80s. I dont think you can say ATL added a black jersey like the Cardinals and Lions have done recently just for the sake of it.

Let's not forget the Ravens - added a Black alt jersey in 2004, after winning the Super Bowl in 2000.

And that means what exactly???

I think it means he's noticed something and is reporting on it ... exactly.

What are you, a cop?

I noticed that the last five world series winners hadn't changed their home uniforms in a long time as of the time that they won. Of the Red Sox, White Sox, Cardinals, Red Sox (again), Phillies, and Yankees, only the White Sox (1991) and Phillies (1992) have had their current looks for less than 50 years as of the time they won.

I also noticed that if I wear a blue shirt to work, the sun will be out during the day, but it will get dark at night.

And the Phillies look is supposed to be a modernization of the uniforms that the team wore in the 50's/60's. Also, does the NFL have a rule saying that alternate uniforms must be throwbacks or color reversals of the dark uniform? Always wondered why teams didnt try a different look for an alternate.

Not sure why there would be a reason to have two of the exact same color jersey but with different designs. I'm assuming you mean that the Colts could have their regular blue jersey, and then have an alt that has northwestern stripes, no stripes, or modern piping? I think that dilutes an image more than a consistent template with flipped colors.

this is what i was envisioning in my last post. please be kind. it's down and dirty in paint and the arizona flag IS hand drawn haha, so again. i realize how crude it is, but just throwing this up as to how a compromise could have been reached.

Oh, the Atlanta Falcons.

Again, I have no strong feelings on this one way or the other, but I do think it's dumb to have a black jersey in the hottest city in the NFL. I know there's a dome, but those things get pretty muggy and stuffy.

Well we had been wearing black jerseys since about the time we came into the league, occasionally rotating them with red primaries, but as someone who has been out to the Dome about a dozen times for games, I can say that it has never felt muggy and stuffy. Quite comfortable actually. Too comfortable, let's get an outdoor stadium already!

For any other team, this would be BFBS as egregious as Tennessee's black uniforms, but...

Since 1960, the two logos they've used have both been almost half black. It's not like black isn't a part of their identity. I actually like the black uniforms, they're going to look great on the field.

Okay, but obviously people still associate that look with them enough that it's ill-advised for the Cardinals to co-opt it. If they wore pastel orange jerseys with red and white numbers on them, everyone would say they look like the Buccaneers, because they would.

So these pants are strictly for the alternate jersey?

That'd be interesting if they worked them in to work with the other unis.

Although, that would make it a more black-dominant set, IMO.

no way they try to work those in. the sole purpose of creating them was due to the fact the red-piped-pants wouldnt work with the new jersey. not designed to mix and match

But taken as a whole, it's not really close. With all due respect to others' opinions, to me it's like saying the Cowboys' white jersey SCREAMS Colts, but I'd argue that the two uniform sets are not easily confused, even if boith have white jerseys with similar striping in different places.

Sorry I should've made it clearer.

I wasn't saying that they'd use them with the current red uniform and current white uniform. That would be disgusting, haha.

I was saying what if they had made changes to the current unis so that those pants would work.

But I see that is highly unlikely, nor would I like to see that happen.

I don't think it was completely necessary to add a black jersey, but it would be nice to see a change every now and then. The only thing I don't like was that they needed a new set of pants to go with the striping, I personally think that their current white pants would do just fine despite the different colored piping.

Overall, B-.

Alright, I've taken another look at the alternate and it's really not that bad at all. I never disliked it, although I still think it's a little unnecessary. A good point has been raised about black being an official Cards color for a very long time, though.

Shouldn't the Cardinals wear Cardinal?

I really don't like "just because we can" black uniforms. Maybe keep the body read and have the yolk and sleeves be black or vice versa.

I'm just not keen on this look...
