I think that might have been a Starter fashion jersey. They made them for all teams. It was certainly before the throwback craze took hold. Outkast would likely be wearing some Mitchell & Ness and striving for authenticity, but maybe Phife was just buying from the same Manny's Baseball Land catalog as we would. This would have been 1990-1991, so the merchandising was just startintg to take off. Starter was pretty prominent then. That and the fact Q-Tip is wearing a Yankees fashion jersey -- with a Braves cap, which always bothered me back then -- makes me think they are both fashion jerseys. No facts to back that up, but that's what it looks like to me on my small phone screen.

Didn't see it mentioned elsewhere, but just putting everyone on lookout for some really interesting Spanish jerseys for tomorrow's Brewers/Cardinals game... everyone's favorite Cerveceros jerseys will be a new color this year... haven't heard what the Cards' will say though.

What number font are the Brewers currently using and/or using on that jersey? It looks like a very common serif font but I can't recall its name offhand. It kind of reminds me of the Ravens' numeral font, too.

Manny's Baseball Land! Awesome memory! Yes, that's a Starter fashion jersey. I had the St. Louis Browns one. They made them for all the MLB teams and a few college teams. I wanted to get the Texas Longhorns jersey at the time but never did.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

According to Henderson, it's a proprietary font they call Miller Gothic. It's similar to Times New Roman, but it's MLB's own font.

Those look amazing, I would LOVE to see a regularly used Brewers gold alternate. The new A's alternate might be my favorite in all of MLB. Wouldn't mind seeing the Pirates go with a gold jersey and the O's go with an orange one either for that matter...

BTW, I've heard the Nats and Padres are going with throwbacks tonight, if not tonight tomorrow. And the Natties will be looking spectacular in these beauties

And apparently they'll be wearing the away one of these.

I was just looking through the MLB Shop and I have to wonder, what's the point?

Catalogs are where I got my logo fix before the Internet, especially when they displayed every team for every item -- or at least jerseys, caps, etc. Loved it.

Rays are wearing Tampa Smokers jerseys this year as their Tampa Baseball throwback. The Cardinals will be in these grey jerseys...

This isn't the first time both teams were wearing throwbacks. In 2005, the Rays were in University of Tampa stuff, and the Cards were in their powder blues.

The Reds-Dodgers went throwback this past week in LA. The Dodgers wore the light blue "brooklyn" duds they've worn a few times this year and the Reds look was simple, yet nice. The Reds are a team to me that needs to feature red as it's only 'real' color. Along with their name being the "Reds", their history allows them to use simplicity as "traditional", ala the Yankees, Tigers, Cubs, etc.. without looking gimmicky.

They wore the black hats with this set, but the batting helmet were all red and in the pics below you can see how nice a road red/gray set looks without accent colors.

for comparison, this is their usual road set:

Hey, those look pretty good. I prefer a vertically arched "Cincinnati," but that works too. Either way, it's a marked improvement over the outlined, drop-shadowed, BFBS, pseudo-olde-tyme mess they're wearing now.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

What's missing?

tampa-smokers.jpg

Well they are promoting tobacco free Florida.

I didn't even catch the cigar when he posted that. I figured he was talking about the zipper. If they want to take the Smoker name in a diffrent direction (as they did with the sunlight/sea animal thing) they could put BBQ spare ribs on the tail.

Those hats are not black, they are navy/midnight blue which is a traditional Cincinnati Reds color.

I know this was brought up back in mid-May, but the Astros started wearing the brick caps with their regular gray roadies now almost every game. They also wear brick undershirts instead of black when they wear them (the socks are still black, though).

..And the Astros have been wearing the road grays quite a bit this year. Finally. I'm assuming this has much to do with Drayton selling the team.
